  • "We have stayed in seven cottages marketed by Sykes in recent years and we think Walter has been the best."

It was an attractive, well-decorated building in an interesting part of Newlyn, accessed from a narrow lane (but with car park close by) and was well-equipped. The owners had generously provided us with some food and sufficient supplies of consumables such as washing up liquid, hand washing liquid, and toilet paper. The information pack was interesting, particularly on the history of the house – the current owners are the fifth generation of the family to own it. The cottage is close to the Coastal Path which passes the end of Church Street. We recommend the Hepworth Museum in St Ives, Trewidden Gardens, St Michael’s Mount, the Newlyn Village trail and the Newlyn Filmhouse. There are good local bus services including the Mousehole bus and the Coaster bus – those provide access to the Coastal Path. We did several sections using the bus links. There is a well-equipped Co-op a short walk away, open till late. The only downside of our holiday was mud – the Coastal path between Newlyn and Lamorna had some very muddy stretches because of all the rain.

A great position for walking into Penzance and Mousehole and close to Newlyn’s wonderful fish shops

  • "Positives first we were permitted to enter earlier than advertised."

The cottage is very warm and welcoming with a nice welcome pack of fresh bread, croissants, butter and milk. The cottage had also been nicely decorated for the Christmas season. We had everything we needed inside and out. The owner was very helpful on the phone. Improvements as a suggestion only the small courtyard would benefit from a light. Please excuse if there is one and we didn’t manage to locate it. The same would be for the front door. Apart from this as detailed in the property description the cottage is on a hill so you need to be fit to walk up. Parking very easy in public car park based on the middle of the hill.

  • "Walter is a little gem equipped with everything to make ones stay comfortable."

The cottage is ideally situated just above the harbour in the fishing village of Newlyn where there are plenty of pubs within easy walking distance. We stayed over the Christmas and the hosts had decorated the cottage with lights and a little tree creating a really festive atmosphere. Would we recommend this property? Absolutely!

  • "Newlyn is something special, so many lovely restaurants and having the fish yard just on the doorstep was amazing with the added benefit of lovely fresh fish."

Walter is a great cottage to base yourself out of. The cottage was comfortable and immaculate, clean and tidy with everything that we needed. Loved that the cottage has been in the family for over 150 years with some awesome photos of then and now. Would defiantly book the cottage again. Highly recommended.

  • "Comfort-wise, the cottage felt like a home from home, being enjoyable to come back to after each day's excursions."

Catering-wise, we were also thoughtfully provided for at the start of our stay. The cottage was very clean and extremely well equipped, with modern appliances and furnishings that enhanced the experience of staying there whilst still managing to retain the charm of the property. The owners have supplied their family links with the cottage that go back to when it was first built, and can be rightfully proud of their contribution to the cottage's history and upkeep. It was a privilege to stay there.

It was immaculately clean with everything we needed from kitchen roll to playing cards, milk and tea bags! You really did think of everything to accommodate guests. The beds were comfy and we all slept well after some great walks into Mousehole, Penzance and to the Marazion Beach. Would definitely recommend and hopefully be back to stay again. Thank you

  • "From the minute we stepped through the door to the Walter it felt like home."

Everything you could possibly need was provided, and more! From a welcome pack with fresh bread and milk, to tea, coffee and hot chocolate and dog treats, not to mention the delicious cakes! If, like us, you had a dog with you. You can tell this has been well thought of. Dog bowls and a mat are provided, as well as doggy towels and throws etc. Easy to clean floor’s throughout downstairs and then a gate on the bottom of the stairs to stop your four legged friend roaming upstairs. The whole place was spotless and you could tell it was really cared for. The attention to detail was amazing, everything matching and everything just felt in the right place. Although there is no parking at the property, we parked in the small local car park which was about 100m from the cottage and paid £15 for the week. We were coming and going all the time and never struggled to find a place. Newlyn itself was lovely. We ate a few times at the Fisherman’s Arms, which we can highly recommend and the ice cream from S Jelberts was amazing.

Many thanks for your lovely comments Samantha. We do everything ourselves to try and ensure that WALTER is a real home from home. So glad you loved Newlyn and visited Jelberts. Best wishes, Paul & Stephanie Property Owner

  • "We found the cottage extremely welcoming and well fitted out with everything we could want and more !"

! Had some lovely touches and the owner had left us some real treats which were greatly appreciated. The extra doggie towels and games came in handy as it was so wet some days ! We would have given 5 stars had the back yard been a little bit bigger. Nevertheless we still loved the cottage !!

Thanks for your comments Julie, and that you were able to make us of the games on any wet days. We're really sorry you couldn't give us a five as there is nothing we can do about the size of the yard. Thanks again, Paul and Stephanie Property Owner

It is ideally situated for walking & also seems to have good public transport. Newlyn is a great place to watch the boats in the harbour & sample local fish in numerous excellent eating places. We particularly liked Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar and Argoe. Also enjoyed ice cream at Jelbeer’s!

  • "Overall a lovely property I would rent again."

More plug sockets would be useful particularly in the back bedroom as they were covered by the bed making using a hairdryer, for example, difficult in that room. I would definitely rent again as a couple or family but for 2 couples I would prefer a property with an ensuite bathroom in addition to the main bathroom. I did also think a bit more could be made of the outside courtyard but that's a minor quibble. The location was excellent and everything else about the property bar the above was excellent.

Excellent accommodation.. spotlessly clean and well equipped throughout to ensure a comfortable stay. The owners provide many thoughtful essentials meaning a relaxing start to your holiday as soon as you enter the property. Easy walking distance into Newlyn with great pubs and restaurants. 30 minutes walk to Penzance and Mousehole. Nestled among other old fisherman's cottages on one of the streets that escaped 20th century redevelopment Walter is first class in just about every respect, comfortable, warm, very well equipped, and gets good wifi and TV signal. The St Peter's Hill car park is a couple of minutes walk away, a real bonus for Newlyn.

Brilliantly located. Great shower, extremely comfortable beds. Cooked fresh fish most days but properly tested the kitchen equipment by making a lasagne. Everything we needed was there. Fab pub (The Red Lion) round the corner and for something fancier, there was Argoe just down the path. Can’t wait to return.

Dear Dr Fay, thank you so much for your generous review. We are so pleased that you had everything you needed in the kitchen that you found the beds comfortable, and that discovered how much Newlyn has to offer. We look forward to hosting you again. Best wishes Property Owner

About the location

NEWLYN

Penzance 1.2 miles; Marazion 6.6 miles; St Ives 8.9 miles.

Nestled next to Penzance, and although still a quaint town in its own right, Newlyn is actually the third largest fishing port in England, and an important Port of Refuge for all seafaring craft. This Cornish town is clustered around the harbour, with its historic 800 year old quay (the Mayflower actually left for America from this quay, not Plymouth) curling around a few small boats on the western side. Famous for the Newlyn school of Art and Newlyn Copper, the Cornwall Coastal Path passes through the town, as does the level Mousehole to Marazion cycle path. An abundance of wildlife and flora can be enjoyed along both, with basking sharks, dolphins and grey seals often seen. The Cornish coast is renowned for surfing, and Penwith offers some splendid beaches on which to enjoy this sport as well as surf fishing for sea bass. Mounts Bay also offers a wealth of opportunity for watersports enthusiasts as well as giving visitors an opportunity to relax and unwind in beautiful surroundings.
