  • "We enjoyed staying at Belvedere, it was very comfortable and had fantastic views of the Severn Valley."

However I do think that it should be made clear on the property details that pets are restricted to downstairs. On arrival we found a stairgate had been fitted on the stairs and our persian cat was restricted to the ground floor. Unfortunately he does get lonely at night so on several occasions we had to get up in the middle of the night as he was crying. We did take covers with us to protect the soft furnishings and beds although he is a very clean cat. On the plus side, he did like the underfloor heating on the ground floor!

The cottage was very homely and welcoming. The renovation was carried out to a very high standard. The views over the River Severn were stunning and beautiful to wake up to all adding to the ambience of the property. Local amenities of Littledean were close by. Excellent location for walking in the Forest of Dean, with a good walk from the property down to Newnham, where you can sit on the banks of the Severn. I would definitely recommend this property.

Really comfortable and a few small touches would really finish it off (eg: a soap/shampoo holder in the shower, a bedside light in the 2nd bedroom, also a tip to bring extra sundries such as loo roll and dishwasher tabs as you will need more than provided, for 7 days)

  • "Belvedere is a beautiful cottage on the edge of the Forest of Dean overlooking the River Severn (although there was very little river to be seen with the recent heat etc)."

It has all that one could wish for a base to explore the Forest and Gemma and Luke are excellent and considerate hosts. The only reason for not giving a 10 for likely to recommend is the proximity to the road, which was much busier than you might expect and would certainly be a worry to anyone with children, or possibly visitors with mobility problems. Otherwise, would thoroughly recommend and we would certainly stay there again on future visits to the area.

Lots to do within an hour's drive such as Gloucester and Bristol cities and lots to do in and around Forest of Dean with steam train, Go Ape, water activities and walks within a short distance.

  • "Probably the best all round cottage and location we have stayed in."

The owners bought a 200+ year old cottage and completely renovated it adding such luxuries as underfloor heating. The open plan layout downstairs maximises the space and makes for great family living. It is well equipped for home cooking. (Or sample the excellent fish and chips from Frydays!) Every room enjoys amazing views down the Severn valley. It is a fantastic base to travel to explore the Forest of Dean and venture out to Gloucester, Cheltenham and Chepstow. It is located off on a quiet country lane but only a few minutes drive to the main roads and shopping in Cinderford - it even has a local cinema! Be sure to walk down to Newnham and reward yourself a cake at the local store. (Sadly we had the wrong date to watch the surfers riding the waves!).

Stunning views, can watch sunrise or sunset. Always felt warm, the log burner heated the house really well if you didn't want the heating on. Very cosy. Traffic could be fast and busy in certain times of day, but that didn't affect me as no kids or dog just need to be mindful when coming out of the cottage. This made an amazing break. Thanks to the owners for making it ready at short notice and being so friendly. Well done for being great hosts. I will be back!

The property

Perched between Newnham and Littledean in the hamlet of Pleasant Stile, Gloucestershire, in the centre of a picturesque network of public footpaths, is this wonderful, two-bedroom detached house, Belvedere.

Enjoying a fantastic location within the scenic Forest of Dean and offering epic views over the Severn estuary’s horseshoe bend (featured in Cotswold Life Magazine), Belvedere is idyllic for couples or a family of four.

Be welcomed into the open-plan living space, where you can look forward to whipping up delicious treats for your guests in the well-equipped kitchen, complete with handy dishwasher and washing machine, ready to enjoy at the dining table for four.

After a hearty meal, if the cosy underfloor heating doesn’t suffice, fire up the woodburning stove, sure to be your pooch’s favourite sleeping spot, and relax on the corner sofa as you select a much-loved film from the smart TV (with built in Alexa) as the evening’s entertainment.

When sleep calls, climb the stairs to the first floor where you can choose from two sumptuous double bedrooms to catch your rest in.

In the morning, wake-up tired eyes with a refreshing shower before rustling up a steaming cup of coffee ready to enjoy out in the rear garden as your four-legged friend stretches their legs.

Explore the local village of Littledean where you will find the charming Bespoke Brewery where you can enjoy a tour of the site and sample the award-winning beer, as well as the Belfry Hotel where you can treat your loved ones to a meal in the hotel’s restaurant, followed by drinks in the bar for a lovely evening without having to venture too far.

There is also Frydays Traditional Fish & Chips takeaway where you can savour a tasty fish supper in the comfort of Belvedere.

Head down the hill into the charming riverside village of Newnham which is home to a selection of locally run shops, pubs and eateries, offering locally sourced goods.

Newnham, a historic shipping village filled with listed buildings, is a popular viewing point for the Severn Bore tidal wave where people travel for miles to watch, kayak or surf this spectacle!

Jump in the car to visit the bustling town of Cheltenham to spend the day dressed up to the nines at the races or if that's not for you head to the city of Gloucester to marvel at the Cathedral which was featured in the Harry Potter franchise.

If you need to leave your pooch at home, there is a doggy day care and kennels in walking distance from Belvedere.

For more impressive filming sites, explore the Forest of Dean to see where Lord of the Rings was brought to life; the Forest of Dean was also home to J.K Rowling!

Outdoor enthusiasts are well-catered for with a plethora of activities on offer, including high ropes courses at Go Ape, archery, mountain biking, underground mine tours, arts and crafts, rock climbing or canoeing and kayaking along the River Wye.

For those in your party seeking something a little different, why not enjoy a local spa or a spot of forest bathing as you soak up your magnificent surroundings.

All this and more awaits with a stay at Belvedere.
