"My brother rented a house name was Brow O’ The Hill in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland."
Brow O’s The Hill presented multiple health deficiencies. We arrived on April 25, 2026. The house was cold, but heat came on at 10:00PM. We went to bed. On April 26, 2026, we awoke to a cold house with no heat. We tried calling the contact on the documents in the house. The calls immediately responded with busy. We left the house to play golf. We returned at night and the house was cold, but the heat came on at 10:00PM. Woke up April 27, 2026, to a cold house. Called “Margaret” and again the calls went to busy. We called the owner. He said he only had the heat on from 10:00AM to 12:00PM and from 10:00PM to 12:00AM. He said we should put a fire in the fireplace. We know nothing about operating a fireplace and there wasn’t anything to burn. The owner has bad judgement in asking us to start a fire in the fireplace. Knowing nothing about a fireplace could have resulted us in burning down his house. The owner said he would have someone contact us. I think having no heat is a health risk. Further, it is hard to sleep when you are cold.
We also complained about the dead bugs and live bugs on the floor of the kitchen. He said those were common and we just had to live with the bugs. Again, this is a health risk as the bugs could transmit disease. If I have bugs at home, I call an exterminator.
We received a call. She said the owner wanted an additional 300 euros to turn on the heat for the rest of our stay. We should pay the 300 euros to the person who was going to mop the floor.
Lastly, when we arrived at Brow O’ the Hill, there were four garbage cans, and all four garbage cans had refuse in them. The garbage cans attracted flies. The garbage cans were right below the kitchen windows
On one day came and took two garbage cans to the garbage truck. She waited until the garbage truck arrived. Garbage cans with garbage in them are a health hazard. Since all four cans contained garbage when we arrived, The owner is not emptying the garbage cans when he should. Further, should have arrived earlier and had all four garbage cans emptied.
The owner is operating a rental cottage with unsafe health conditions.
We left Saturday May 9, 2026.
We appreciate all feedback, both positive and negative, as we continually strive to provide an excellent experience for our guests at The Brow on the Hill. However, we were very concerned by the overall tone of your comments, particularly the suggestion that the Cottage has “multiple health deficiencies,” which we strongly dispute.
Addressing your points individually:
Heating:
The heating is scheduled for two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening, which is appropriate for the time of year and consistent with typical usage during the temperatures experienced at the time of your visit. You requested that the heating be left on continuously, 24 hours a day for almost two weeks. We explained that this was not feasible as the system operates on oil and on 25th April there was both a significant increase in fuel costs and a national shortage of fuel due to widespread protests disrupting supply.
Despite this, we offered to extend the heating by an additional two hours at no extra charge, or alternatively to run the heating throughout the night for an additional fee of €300, which you chose. We would also note that additional blankets were available within the property but do not appear to have been used.
We also acknowledge that while the open fireplace is a normal and traditional heating option in Irish homes, we fully understand and respect that you may not have been comfortable using it.
Woodlice (Slaters):
You mentioned the presence of woodlice in the kitchen. This can occasionally occur in Irish homes, particularly older properties, as they are attracted to external moisture and can enter through very small gaps. We have taken all reasonable steps to prevent this issue, including maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, ensuring regular ventilation, reducing moisture levels and sealing any visible entry points. We have also used appropriate pest control measures.
While we accept that there was a higher than usual number present (approx 15), we responded immediately by offering to thoroughly clean and hoover the area at no cost, which was completed. It is important to note that woodlice are harmless and do not pose any health risk.
Bins:
Regarding the bins, these are typically positioned at the side of the property, out of view from the house. They may occasionally be moved by guests for convenience. Collection is carried out on a two-week cycle in line with local arrangements. We were not aware that only two bins had been emptied and appreciate this being brought to our attention. We will address this directly with our caretaker.
We genuinely value guest feedback and always take practical steps to address any issues raised. We are proud of the consistently positive experiences reported by the vast majority of our visitors and we remain committed to maintaining those standards.
We hope that, despite these concerns, you were still able to enjoy aspects of your stay and enjoyed your golfing and we thank you again for bringing your comments to our attention. Edwin

"The cottage was spacious and functional, but as other reviewers have said somewhat dated."
Housekeeper was very helpful and the cottage was clean and tidy.
We agree with the previous reviewer that the WiFi barely works. It is provided by a portable Vodafone hotspot that was slow during the day and didn’t work at all in the evenings (presumably when the network was busy).

"Upon arrival it was clear the property needed some tlc, and inside too."
Its a very spacious house, lovely big kitchen and dining.
Pros:
Big enough for a large family
The most helpful cleaner/caretaker
Location is fantastic
Cons:
Very dated, the oven was thankfully replaced on our stay and shower heads also.
Wifi, very poor, it never worked for us in the sitting room so we plugged out the vodafone dongle.
The curtains let in so much light that we doubled up using the kitchen pair

"The owner should spend a week at this property to be able to appreciate what is required to raise it to even 4 stars."
From a lack of everyday kitchen utensils (eg basins, measuring jug, strainers) to unsafe toilet seat, trip hazard in bedroom doorway, no coat hooks in hallway, lack of extra layers for beds on cold nights, you need to stay here to realise what is missing. There was no internet access. I messaged the owner but got no response ! There was no information about the central heating and very little fuel for the open fire. Altogether, a less than cosy welcome. A welcome pack consisted of some cooking oil and sugar, not even salt in the salt pot or a few essentials to start your stay with.

"Being the remote location wifi was too low."
Owner should provide better service for network connectivity. brought my own dongle but it was not much of use. Mobile reception was also low so you can't connect using hotspot as well. Rest everything was great.

"Stayed in this lovely bungalow for 1 week in May."
Very spacious but sadly lacking in character - desperately needs updating.
4 adults in our group - only 4 seats in lounge - unsure how 7 would cope.
Ample crockery etc but desperately needs more cooking equipment as we tended to eat in.
Grateful for dish wash tabs & cloths etc supplied.
Heating was not adequate for my elderly in law - especially in the mornings.
Would really benefit from wi fi too.
More adequate tv reception required - free sat maybe - as tv signal poor.
Perfectly based for visiting this beautiful area of Ireland and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

"Spacious accommodation which is in need of updating but that may be reflected in the price."
Large secure garden which out pet enjoyed.
Good location nice view and very peaceful
No wi fi which was disappointing.
Heating controls locked away so not able to adjust as needed.
However the lady who is the caretaker was very helpful and juggled the controls to give us a little more warmth.
Just watch out for electrics as the system trips out if certain electrical appliances are used at once.
We got use to everything and generally had a pleasant week

"Generally a good place, bit hard to find, but if you turn right at 3 concrete bollards in the final road, then its up the hill on the right,so straight forward,a few problems of a minor nature though take a large towel for showering as mentioned by others!"
as the one provided are small, another one was the heating controls were locked last week was cold, and my elderly mother had difficulty remaining warm as a result, the owner suggested using the open fire but if you haven't done this before or don't like fumes it may not suit to do this other than that fine.

"Had a little difficulty finding the property - maybe a small sign could be put up at the roadside to indicate the way?"
The property itself was adequately equipped and suited our needs.
Had an issue with a couple of things, but they were dealt with very quickly and efficiently.
Would recommend taking your own bath towels as the ones provided were suitable for small children and leprechauns, but not for average sized adults :-)
Overall, a very nice base to enjoy our break.

"In general very satisfied with the property and location, however the lack of WiFi/Broadband was a negative especially for the children and also the DVD player didn't work when we tried it."
The handle on the cistern in the bathroom was loose which made flushing difficult but a simple tightening of the handle fixed this. We had our dog with us which worked out fine and we made sure to clean after her but other local dogs were around the garden every day and we had to clean up after them too.

Felt very homely and was very well equipped. House and surrounding areas have great views and the area had some nice walks too, the town is only about a 15min walk. WiFi would of been nice but definitely not a deal breaker in returning in the future. Lots to do near by and I would definitely recommend a trip or two to Rosnowlagh beach only 9 mins drive from the house it's a huge sandy beach with great waves, our kids loved body boarding there.
