    The property is beautifully furnished, well equipped and very comfortable, and the hosts were friendly and readily available if required. The River House is located in a lovely small town and is ideally situated for touring Donegal.

  • "The River House is a really special place."

    We’ve had a lot of holidays in lovely houses and cottages in the UK and Ireland, but this is this first time we’ve all said we’d really like to go back to the same property. The photos don’t lie, there’s a grandness about the River House, but it’s also really welcoming and comfortable. And it’s in a beautiful and interesting part of the world. Good pubs and shops, and a very useful food van just over the road. We loved everything about the River House. One wee niggle, the splendid-looking double bed in the upstairs room does creak a lot (even with just one person in it …!). Don’t let that put you off though - I find myself wondering where the owner does live if they choose not to live here!

  • "River House overlooks the Lennon River in Ramelton, Co."

    Donegal. A wonderful and welcoming home full of character & charm! Positioned at the heart of this rural town, the gateway to Fanad & beyond. A perfect base for touring Donegal. If you've time to spare at the weekend visit Green Door Vintage wear down on the quay, open 12 noon to 5pm Sat & Sunday, dine upstairs in the Bridge bar. On Wednesday night drop by Conway's Bar for a great session of music & craic. Oh, and Charlie our dog thought River House was the best accommodation he has stayed at ever!!

    Well done for scouting out some of the good things in the vicinity. Thankyou for your lovely review. It would be great to get Charlie wagging his tail in the River House again! Property Owner

  • "River House is a gem, far superior in comfort and elegance than a holiday home usually provides!"

    We loved the spacious rooms, the kitchen / lounge area was very well equipped and had everything you need to cook including a great range oven. The food truck opposite the house offers very good quality food if you want a break from cooking. It was a pleasure to sit in the lovely library room with it's great selection of books, enjoyed the quiet and very comfortable ambience. Bedrooms were comfortable and bathrooms were super clean! The courtyard garden and the main gardens are very impressive and a great bonus, if you get good weather!!!!Overall the best holiday house ever. Ramelton is very interesting place and a good base for visiting lots of places.

  • "This house is beautiful and extremely spacious."

    We had a fabulous stay and were very comfortable. We would not hesitate to stay here again. It made our holiday so enjoyable. It is in an excellent location with easy parking outside and an amazing garden. The owner is very responsive and we had a couple of minor practical issues which were swiftly dealt with.

  • "This is a lovely property, very comfortable, spacious and well equipped."

    Unfortunately the weather was not good enough for us to enjoy the garden but the bright open kitchen/dining/living area more than made up for it. The village is very nice, more there than it first appears. We found it a good location for exploring the area. We would recommend this property.

  • "We are seasoned travellers around Ireland and beyond and prefer to self cater, stay in a comfortable place and relax and explore… the River House by far is one of our most brilliant experiences!"

    ! We are impressed by the decor , quality of furnishings, utensils, artwork, furniture, the beds! shower, jacuzzi, outdoor patio area, extensive garden and a glorious open fire .. which was lit religiously every day!! The location allowed us to venture up the Fanad peninsula and over to Rosguil at our leisure and we took in many hikes and extensive beach walks at Ballyhiernan, Ballymackstocker and Rathmullan. The convenience of the Blue Goat Deli (truly excellent coffee from a truly eccentric owner!!), the Lennonside Butchers and the Bridge Bar Restaurant as well as the famous Ranch Food truck is fabulous!! We purchased loads of fresh mussels and scallops and vegetables at the weekly Thursday market directly outside our front door! Our hosts were remarkably responsive, respectful of privacy and allowed an additional night as well as a late checkout. This is a space to savour, you will find comfort, a beautiful ambience and an attention to detail which is extremely rare to find…. I am so glad to have discovered this rarity…. We will be back!!!

  • "There seemed to be a water leak in the downstairs bathroom."

    Not bad but annoying. The downstairs bedroom wasn't 100% clean, bed linen was marked. The rest of the house was lovely.

Resting rurally in Ramelton, County Donegal is The River House, a wonderful three-storey property, welcoming six guests and one furry companion.

Enjoying a prime position near a host of amenities and upon the riverside, whilst offering guests flexible sleeping and living arrangements, a stunning multi-level garden, and a characterful interior, the property delivers the perfect base for a family escape.

Park up on the roadside before entering into The River House and ascending up to the first floor; here you will find the light-flooded open-plan living space, offering a well-equipped kitchen, a relaxed dining area, and a homely sitting area with a balcony onto the elevated patio.

There is a small one bedroom cottage at the end of the patio, occasionally used by the owners family, which can be available for larger parties.

Next door you will find the charming dining room, set up for formal meals with the woodburning stove alight, before descending to the ground floor, where you can relax in the sitting room with one of the many books on offer in hand.

When sleep calls, select between a ground-floor king-size with Sky TV and access to the rear patio, serviced by a shower room, and a king-size and a twin, both set on the second-floor, serviced by an indulgent bathroom with Jacuzzi bath.

Awaken to a stroll around the pretty gardens before travelling beyond The River House to stock up on the essentials, dine out and visit the stunning landscape of Lennon River Waterfall.

Travelling further afield, enjoy a round of golf at Letterkenny Golf Club, or if you'd prefer an activity for all the family, head to Letterkenny Activity Centre, to try your hand at archery, the high ropes, and go karting.

Finish off your getaway in a nature-filled surrounding by hiking across Glenveagh National Park, the second largest reserve in Ireland, touring Glenveagh Castle, and following the walking trails through Mullangore Wood, offering breath-taking vistas of the nearby lochs.

The sleepy heritage town of Ramelton, County Donegal, sits at the start of the Fanad Peninsula, where the River Lennon joins Lough Swilly. Cut into a wooded valley, Ramelton dates back to the 17th century and the distinctive architecture of the warehouse buildings on the quays dominate the village. Ramelton has a colourful history as one of Donegal’s most important ports, with ships arriving from the Carribbean in the 1800s to export linen made in the village. Though quieter nowadays, an abundance of welcoming local shops and pubs still welcome visitors, and there are ample opportunities for fishermen and golfers in the region. The picturesque Fanad Head is just a short distance away, as are beaches at Rathmullan and Dunfanaghy.
