  • "We’ve just come back from a lovely 3-day stay at Alston Hall in Plymouth with our family."

    Overall, we had a good time and the property has a lot of positives, but there are a few areas that we feel need attention. Unfortunately, most of the bedrooms don’t have shower facilities, and some of the bathrooms are in need of renovation. We were also disappointed that the indoor heated swimming pool was not working during our stay. Another issue was the kitchen cooker. For such a large property, the induction cooker wasn’t really suitable for our group, as we were unable to cook properly for everyone. A larger gas or electric cooker would be much more appropriate for a property of this size. Apart from these issues, we enjoyed our stay and the property itself was good. We hope the owner will consider addressing these points, as fixing them would make a big difference and provide a much better experience for future guests. Overall, a nice place with good potential, but a few important improvements are needed.

  • "Amazing place for a family get together - land , house, and tennis courts with swimming pool a treat!"

    Top florr no showers just baths. Also we had a chef for the time. - she found it hard to cater for the whole family - but possible! Meemories were made and thank you!

  • "We had a lovely stay at Alston Hall and thoroughly enjoyed our time there."

    The property is beautiful, spacious and well presented, and it was a great place to spend the weekend with our group. Everything was clean and comfortable, and the house had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. The setting was lovely and the property itself made the weekend feel really special. We also have to mention the gardener and maintenance man, who was absolutely amazing. He was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and we really enjoyed hearing about the history of the house from him. His knowledge and enthusiasm really added something special to our stay and it was fascinating to hear the stories and history behind such a beautiful property. There was an issue with the swimming pool being unavailable during our stay, which was disappointing as we had been looking forward to using it, but overall this didn’t take away from what was otherwise a fantastic stay. We would happily stay at Alston Hall again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely property for a group getaway.

  • "Had a terrific stay (our second) at Alston Hall with 21 adults."

    The team was brilliant and incredibly responsive whenever we had a query or issue, and the house itself was lovely - the immense new kitchen and dining room, in particular. A few of the ensuite bathrooms don't have wall-mounted showers, but these are quibbles at most. Overall, would thoroughly recommend a stay here - although do note the house is several miles from the nearest pub or village.

  • "Oh my goodness- your property took my breath away, from the moment we pulled up outside, to walking into your beautiful home, thank you for sharing it with my family."

    We had the best holiday, the swimming pools and the grounds were exceptional, the local beaches were great, Plymouth was on our doorstep, it was everything we wished for. The grandchildren loved learning to play chess and we had a wonderfully chilled week, thanks again.

  • "We greatly enjoyed our stay - 15 adults and 11 children, especially the spaciousness inside and outside and being able to use the pools, tennis court and games room."

    We understand that the property is being gradually renovated but that did not cause us any significant problems. The lady managing the property was helpful if there were queries, as was the maintenance man when called upon. We struggled with fridge space - really the property needs an additional fridge, something that could be sorted easily. Also we could find no facility inside or out to hang/dry clothes. and there were only two snooker cues

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at Alston Hall."

    The house is amazing! It's huge, it's beautiful and has such character. The bedrooms were lovely and so were both swimming pools! The kitchen was so nice it was modern and very big. The whole house had the "wow" factor. It perfectly accommodated 27 of us but could have easily fit more people. Could have stayed for longer and will definitely recommend to others. I'd love to go back.

  • "My family of 32 with ages ranging from 79 down to 5 months thoroughly enjoyed our week at Alston Hall."

    The swimming pool and tennis court were well used and enjoyed. The house was so big that although we were a large number we never felt on top of each other, but were all able to eat together in the dining room. There was always plenty of hot water for baths/showers. The bathrooms need updating, but I am sure this will be done as the quality of the kitchen already updated is amazing. We look forward to returning.

  • "The new kitchen was an amazing space and when the rest of the house is fully "done up" it will be wonderful."

    Currently much of the property is looking very tired in places but for our large family group ranging from 1yr to 84yrs and with dogs the house was just what we needed.

    Great use was made with indoor pool and snooker room. If we had any problems or questions it was dealt with promptly by the manager’s. We will be back.

    With this in mind we found the cleanliness outstanding, well done to your house keeping team. All our family were overwhelmed by the space and size of the property especially the children. The facilities eg the snooker room and pool were great for getting people together. We all loved the character of Alston Hall and would recommend to others in the future. We are very keen to see what changes you will do in the new year!

  • "We really enjoyed our stay and the kids loved the pools and the space they had to play hide and seek."

    The facilities were ok, made use of the washing machines,kitchen was fully equipped but wasn't big enough for the amount of people during our stay but we made it work. Some of the beds were uncomfortable and no showers on the 3rd floor was a bit of a problem but we just used some of the other spare rooms. The house is in need of some repair especially the kitchen and bathrooms ie new shower curtains wouldn't of gone a miss. The amount of space this property has is brilliant for everyone including the dogs. The maintenance guy was very friendly and came when needed to clean the outdoor pool. The roads to and from the house are poor to say the least with pot holes and narrow roads but that is Devon and Cornwall. Bit out of the way of the local beaches and pubs as you can't walk to them as the roads are to narrow so you have to use your car if you need to go out. But all in all we all had all,26 of us ,had a fab time and the kids did not want to leave.

Alston Hall is a remarkable, three-storey country house, down a long drive and a short distance from Mothecombe Beach.

Originally a rectory and now a family home, it is designed for serenity, fun, and relaxation for large groups of family or friends.

This property is a fabulous base for family occasions and small corporate events.

The entrance hall, which doubles as a sitting room, has a wonderful feel of grandeur, with its oak panelling, stained glass, piano and a magnificent gallery above with more seats.

You can spread out in two more plush sitting rooms.

The open plan kitchen/ breakfast room is fully equipped to cater for smaller family meals.

A separate dining room with its long table (seats 30 people) and caters for more extensive meals.

After dinner, the snooker room awaits.

At the end of the day, drift up the elegant stairs to a choice of eighteen bedrooms spread over the first and second floors, seventeen of which have an en suite bathroom, ensuring no morning queues.

With its former role as a hotel, the house has all sorts of fabulous activities to enjoy, including an indoor swimming pool, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, a tennis court, a play area, three acres of lawns and gardens, and an enclosed walled garden with barbecues, perfect for an evening of chattering and alfresco dining.

This spectacular abode really does offer everything, there’s no chance of getting bored!

If you do want to venture beyond the grounds, you can find more activity at Fort Bovisand where you enjoy concessionary rates for scuba diving, as you do at Dartmouth Golf and Country Club where you can play a round or be pampered in the spa.

Mothecombe Beach is an unspoilt sandy beach situated in a sheltered cove at the mouth of the River Erme estuary, owned and maintained by the Flete Estate. Known for being one of the quieter beaches in Devon, yet easily accessible from the car park you'll find plenty of room for games and water activities. Pets are not permitted on the beach between the 1st May to 30th September. Heading just over a mile inland is Battisborough Cross, a wonderful village resting between Membland and Holbeton in Devon and ideally located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, well-known for its plethora of scenic walks, bike rides and stunning beaches. Your local amenities can be found in the nearby village of Newton Ferrers, where you can dine at the Dolphin Inn, or stock up on essentials at the convenience store and delicatessen. Continue onto Bovisand, home to a beautiful family-friendly beach and bay, as well as a picturesque harbour, the Watch House Battery, a café, and the nearby Mussel Inn. Further afield, you’ll find the bustling port city of Plymouth, where you’ll find many attractions, including the National Marine Aquarium, National trust – Saltram, The Box, Royal William Yard, Devil’s Point and the Plymouth Gin Distillery.
