  • "Although we made the decision to cut our holiday down by one night when the the bad storm Ciaran hit the village, we had a great time at Quaterdeck, even with the bad weather, we managed to get out and walk nearly every day down to the beach."

The pictures don't do it justice, the views were a "WOW" and it is very homely, with everything you need. On arriving there was complementary tea, coffee, milk, a lovelly bottle of wine and some yummy shortbread, lovelly gesture 'thank you'. Would definitely go back.

  • "We have just returned after 70mph gales in Devon and very wet weather but none of this stopped us from enjoying the area or the warm welcome at The Quarterdeck."

First of all, booking was easy and communication from Sykes and later the owner was excellent. The photographs depicted the cottage accurately. You often wonder when you book whether the 'sea view' will be a sea view but we certainly got that! A view to die for from all living spaces. Easy to walk to too. The sea tractor was still running but the walks at low tide to Burgh Island were amazing. The Pilchard Pub was so welcoming. Genuinely old, lovely staff, food and drink. A different world. Quarterdeck itself was brilliant for 4 adults and their 2 dogs. A 5th adult could easily be accommodated. The utility room was brilliant for wet dogs and clothes. Really spacious. Kitchen very well equipped and a welcoming cuppa, milk, wine and biscuits awaited us. Lovely sitting room / dining room plus 3 bedrooms. We were short of nothing. High chair, outside seating all provided too if you needed it. As it was winter we tended to eat lunch out and dinner back at The Quarterdeck. I had brought some kitchen equipment with me but it wasn't needed. Large freezer and 2 fridges are provided as well. Lots of places to visit nearby as well as the beautiful coast. Just get used to windy roads, some of which are tidal! Great fun was had by us all. Thank you to Sykes and Peter and Sarah! xxxx

  • "It should be noted that we had to use the car to get to the beach as the hill was too steep for us on the way back."

The beach was great. It was handy being able to play in the garden until the tide went out, the tide table provided was invaluable to plan our days.

Thank you for your feedback and for giving Quarterdeck a 100% rating across the board. We are sorry to hear you found the slope up from the beach steep; in the last 4 years no other families have reported the need to use a car. It is just 200 metres to the coastal path and the beach is not far beyond this. Property Owner

However it is in need of some TCL looks very tired in certain areas. Kitchen area not brilliant needs good spruce up looking very tired and the extractor fan is very dated and grubby. Tiles and edges need regrouting or replacing. Bathroom has been updated and is good, lots of hot water could do with a non slip bath mat, towels are rather on the small side. Bedroom needs decorating but bed and linens were lovely very comfy bed. Extension on side was very useful especially for drying off our doggies after their swim. Garden area was lovely and enjoyed sitting and enjoying the views. Cottage was comfortable overall just needs a uplift.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed Quarterdeck and liked the new bathroom, new mattresses and wonderful sea views. We annually update and redecorate, and we agree that the extractor fan needs changing. Property Owner

  • "Thank you for a wonderfully relaxing week at Quarterdeck!"

In need of some rest and relaxation, we set off to Devon and Bigbury on Sea with our faithful springador, Jack. What a treat was in store for us! Comfy beds with fluffy pillows and duvets, A powerful hot shower to energise us in the morning and the most amazing views from the sitting room windows! Very well equipped and spacious with a homely sitting room to relax in. Quarterdeck is a delight! We loved waking in the morning to the sound of sheep and baby lambs in the adjoining field and the incredible sunsets. Jack especially enjoyed the long walks and swimming in the sea!! He was less keen on visiting historic houses but we enjoyed them! There is so much to see and do and enjoy. Quarterdeck really is an excellent base for exploring and if like us, you bring your faithful friend, then the utility room is perfect for drying off and relaxing after a hard day’s work chasing your tennis ball into the sea! If you need to rest and relax or are in search of action and activity, then Quarterdeck makes a fabulous base. We loved it!

We found the bungalow offered every possible comfort and amenity that we could have asked for and was lovely and clean. The beds were extremely comfortable which resulted in a good nights sleep, something that we don't always get away from home The standard and cleanliness of the linen were far higher than most cottages we have stayed in and of the quality normally associated with top hotels. The view along the coast from the living room was one we will always remember to enjoy the spectacular sunsets. It was all the thoughtful extras provided by the owners that helped make the holiday, most comfortable outdoor chairs/loungers to enjoy the beautiful private garden, croquet, plenty of games as well as boards and a windbreak for the beach. Due to the location we only used the car once during our stay with superb coastal and estuary walks as well as the iconic Burgh Island to explore. A wonderful stay in a most comfortable property that we can highly recommend.

Quarterdeck is an aptly named property, being perched above Bigbury-on-Sea.

Directly overlooking Burgh Island, it commands a stunning, south-facing panoramic view of Bigbury Bay, stretching from Bolt Tail in the east to Stoke Point in the west.

The sitting room and all the bedrooms have sea views.

From this cottage, it is just a five-minute walk down a quiet, no-through road to the South West Coast Path and Bigbury Beach, one of the loveliest sandy beaches in the South West.

Next you will pass the kitchen on the way to the hallway where you can go left to the bedrooms and bathroom, or right to the open plan sitting room with dining area.

Step outside for alfresco meals in the spacious lawned garden or watch the sun setting over the coast or spot the Eddystone Lighthouse twinkling at night far out to sea.

There is so much to do at Bigbury throughout the year.

Guests can take a ride on the unique sea-tractor at high tide across the causeway to Burgh Island and explore this magical island, taking time to stop for a drink or snack in the old fisherman’s pub, the Pilchard Inn.

For that special occasion there is nowhere better or grander than The Burgh Island Hotel, celebrated for its Art Deco design and for the inspiration it gave to its regular visitor, Agatha Christie, to write one of her best known murder mysteries, And Then There Were None.

Perfect for classic bucket-and-spade holidays, Bigbury-on-Sea is also ideal for surfing, windsurfing and kayaking.

Equipment hire and lessons can be booked for all of these activities at the Discovery Surf School.

Also located by the beach is the Venus Cafe, which serves delicious, organic and free-range food throughout the year.

Bigbury Golf Club, noted for its friendliness, is also open all year round.

Keen walkers will be spoilt for choice here with some of the most spectacular stretches on the South West Devon Coast Path being right on the doorstep.

For anyone who can tear themselves away from this idyllic location, the charming towns of Modbury, Salcombe and Kingsbridge are all close by, whilst Plymouth, Dartmouth and the wild open spaces of Dartmoor are also all within easy reach.

With so much to do and so many options available, Quarterdeck is the perfect spot for a holiday at any time of year.
