"First impressions of The Shippon were beautiful a building with Idlic surroundings."
Waking up to rolling countryside was lovely.
Inside the property it was beautiful, clean and comfortable.
We arrived in hot weather. It soon became apparent that the sun shone through the double glass doors until sunset. Which is absolutely fine, but a roller blind covered both doors. Meaning you have to have both doors closed to have the roller blind down (which made the living space unbelievably hot) or have both doors open with the blind up which also made the property too hot to sit in. This made things uncomfortable in the property, so the only option you had was to sit outside in the full Sun. No parasol was provided. No fan was provided for inside the property. Which I think for the comfort of visitors in the summer is the bare minimum.
There was also no welcome pack. Just a small bottle of milk which was disappointing. As every property we have stayed in previously has given some local produce to enjoy, which is always welcome. Little things in the kitchen like foil and salt and pepper wouldn’t go amiss.
Also worth noting the tap water is yellow, due to being supplied by a spring. This wasn’t on the welcome information and had us a little worried and we had to contact the owner late at night to address this.
Kathryn and John are lovely hosts. Just a few adjustments would have made a perfect stay. Overall we had a lovely stay at Wyke Farm. We would recommend with a few doable tweaks :)
Hello, We are sorry to see that you felt uncomfortable during your stay. Regarding welcome pack, we provide tea, coffee and milk. Starter quantities of loo rolls, tea towels, handwash, shampoo, dishwash tabs, cloths etc. We usually provide flowers cut from our own garden, but had not owing to the recently dry conditions and having little to cut (we don’t think ‘garage’ out of season blooms are in order). We used to put more welcome items in, but find that people often leave them. For perishable items, such as butter, this is wasteful. To be frank, 50% of guests don’t use the milk we supply nowadays. And we generally try to clear out store cupboard items left by other guests, as we can’t be held responsible for the suitability for consumption of any items left by others. However, our salt and pepper mills should have been full and we shall check and top up accordingly on next changeover. We do put foil, baking paper and cling film on at the start of the season, and check periodically for top ups. It is so difficult to get everything just right, as different guests appreciate different things, and the nature of the self catering unit is really that you will have to nip to the shops (1 mile) to get the kind of things which you know you use. The period of your stay was not particularly hot, but we appreciate that the Shippon patio receives sun from early afternoon to sunset. We don’t really know why the blind/door combination was a problem. We did have a fan, which we could have given you (we provided them the previous week to guests as it was very hot). We ask all of guests to let us know if we can do anything to assist throughout their stay. You are correct that we don’t have a parasol. We used to have one, but a sharp gust of wind had damaged it, and the nearby table. We had not replaced it, but shall look for a simple parasol. We understand that the tap water has a tinge to it, noticeable when pouring larger quantities, but it is not unsafe to drink or use.

"I have to say that this is a perfect place to stay for a family with a dog."
Very comfortable accommodation with parking right outside the doors. Beautiful views of rolling countryside all around. Walk out of the lounge, turn left and you have a three field walk for the dog first thing in the morning before you set off on your travels for the day. Literally five minutes drive and you are on the A35 or in Axminster, which is surprising as from the farm you would think that it's nothing but countryside in every direction. Highly recommended.
Thank you for your feedback, so glad you enjoyed your stay.

"We enjoyed our week at this property which is in a rural setting overlooking the hills."
It didn't bother us but if you are looking for a tranquil stay you can hear the traffic from the main road. The barn was very basic compared to other places we have stayed over the years. The mattress in the ensuite room was very worn and not one to get a comfortable night sleep on. The owners live on site but the barn is private and has plenty of outdoor space including private terrace with outdoor furniture, which was a bonus having the sun loungers. A good base for getting out and about to explore. Excellent farm shop just 2 miles drive or Tesco 5 minutes drive.
Thank you for your review, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay. Having reviewed the contents against the Sykes required inventory, we are confident that we are well stocked. If there were any specific points which led you to feel things were basic, we are keen to know and understand better, so that we can take action. The mattress in the ensuite king room is firm. We have a returning guest who selects that bedroom for this very reason, so we have to accept that we can’t please everyone. We are sorry that it did not give you a good night’s rest. We add duvet toppers and from inspection this week, can confirm that the mattress is not worn. It has no scuffs, stains or damage? Thank you for taking the time to review the cottage.

"Shippon is located in a lovely area and has beautiful views."
The cottage was clean and well presented. Whilst some of the pictures/descriptions showed stairs we were unaware of the fact that there were no handrails which we felt was a health & Safety issue especially as 4 of us were 70 - 82 years old.
Also the area to allow dogs free rein to run was some way from the cottage and on a significant slope which was difficult fr us oldies! However the cottage would be ideal for younger folk.
David, we are sorry you were not entirely happy. It would help us if your comments were published to explain the scoring, and give context. You are correct to point out that on our farm, our surfaces beyond the Shippon terrace are not entirely flat. Our fenced fields are where we recommend you free run your dogs, and these are gently sloping. We will consider whether we could put handrails on the step-ups between levels, but can in no way make the building or setting Part M compliant, due to the heritage constraints.
