The cottage was very comfortable and warm. The owners were very welcoming and greeted us upon arrival and told us of the best attractions to see and if they saw us after our day out would come and have a chat, which made us feel more welcome. The only little fault I could find is there is not much room down one side of the double bed as there is a dressing table there. Other than that I would recommend it. It is

Very well appointed, comfortable, very clean and well equipped. The welcome box of lovely biscuits on arrival was a generous surprise. Peaceful, tranquil and perfectly situated for exploration of this lovely part of the country. Shaftesbury was an excellent base, with all amenities and most interesting history. The owners were extremely welcoming and supportive. Very generous hosts. Couldn’t have asked for more. Will return in a heartbeat.

When I booked it, I had not noticed “can not bring Guests back for overnight stays. Nor was it clearly indicated on the site that “No Children” were allowed. Though We understood the reasoning from the Martins, it was disappointing. However we made do, and had a great stay. The Cottage is convenient to the area we were visiting. It had two bedrooms, clean and comfortable and good parking. We love seeing the deer in the field, a variety of birds and even a rabbit visited. Another amenity of a Washer/Dryer would have been very helpful as well; especially, since it was a rainy week and we were visiting from the US. Mr and Mrs Martin were both very nice and chatted with us when we saw them. The cottage was welcoming and Mrs Martin had left us some cookies (biscuits) along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

I had to use the heating one morning and it was fast and effective. Good location for access to key Dorset sites. Easy drive to the coast. No sound from (not very busy) A350 but not somewhere where you could go out of the gate for a walk.

The setting was glorious. The shower was really powerful, the internet was reliable and we were able to watch our fire stick with no problems. If there had been blackout blinds on the bedroom windows, I would have given five stars for comfort.

The place was spotlessly clean and there was a a welcome pack of assorted biscuits which went down well with a nice cup of tea after our journey. The views out from the cottage are stunning and despite being just off the A350 it was very peaceful and quiet. It is in a great position for exploring north Dorset we will definitely be booking again for another stay in the not to distant future.

It is so very quiet with lovely views. As we were there the first week in March and had snowfall it was important that the cottage is very cosy and warm. The beds are particularly comfortable. Although the kitchen is quite ‘compact’ it is was adequate for our needs with all necessary utensils. We cooked every day. The Wi-Fi signal is strong enough for a fire stick. Would highly recommend this cottage.

The views are spectacular from the living room and it was a pity that it was not really warm enough to sit out on the patio. Everything was fine although it does take a while to adjust to the small kitchen - the draining board is useful as a working surface. I could have done with proper oven gloves as carrying a hot casserole from the oven to the dining table with just an oven mitt and a tea towel was somewhat scary! All in all a good week and I can recommend the Half Moon for Sunday carvery lunch.

Entrance is quite hidden and easy to pass. Not easy to enter onto main road from property. Owners close by which I found handy for issues or information. Also the directions to the property are inadequate and need to be more specific. Thanks to the comments of a previous reviewer we were able to locate the cottage. However, the cottage itself was peaceful, comfortable and warm with wonderful views over the Dorset countryside. The kitchen is very compact but manageable for a short break, although a dish drainer would have been useful. There was no departure or recycling instructions which needs to be addressed.

The surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful and there are plenty of places to visit nearby. We enjoyed a lovely Sunday roast at Ye Olde Two Brewers Inn and days out in Sherborne and Shaftesbury. The Orchard Park Garden Centre near Gillingham is also worth a visit. Our hosts, Mr and Mrs Martin, were very welcoming and on hand if needed. The accommodation was fresh and clean and catered to our needs. Although the kitchen is tiny it had everything we required. The only suggestion we would make is to hang the fridge door the other way round! We would definitely return, thank you.

  • "Rycross Farm Cottage is a tranquil and relaxing location for a break."

The owners are very friendly and helpful and are nearby, but not intrusive. I arrived at dusk, and a welcoming light had been left on which made me smile. The cottage is bright and warm and the kitchen, although small, is very well equipped. Beds are comfy and broadband reliable. The views across the countryside are spectacular and I saw birds of prey and a couple of deer in the garden. There is also outside seating for visits with better weather. If the peace and quiet gets too much, the historic and busting town of Shaftesbury with its independent shops and Thursday market is only a few moments drive away. There is also a Tesco and a soon to be opened Lidl in town. For those coming from the south, if you find your way to the A350 from Blandford Forum and head north, you will reach a place called Cann. Pass straight through and as you get to the point where the 30mph returns to 40mph, indicate left and take that first turn which is almost on top of the speed limit sign. Rycross Farm isn't signposted from this direction and, if you miss the turn , it's probably safest to carry on to the first Shaftesbury roundabout and come back. This was my first post-pandemic cottage holiday and, if anyone is concerned about doing the same, you can choose this venue with confidence. It is clean and obviously loved. You can be as isolated or as gregarious as you choose. I can't wait to go back.

Facilities in the cottage were good, the kitchen although compact, was very well equipped with plenty of utensils, pans and baking trays, so there is no need to worry about taking those scissors, bottle opener or anything else from home! We had no problems with the shower as previously commented upon. Just turn the shower thermostatic valve to its hottest temperature and its warm in less than a minute, then adjust to suit. We all slept well and the beds were super comfy, with plenty of storage space for our clothes and belongings. Nearby, there were plenty of nice shops, pubs, cafes and a large Tesco in Shaftesbury. We would recommend Ecco Gelato at the top of Gold Hill for the best ice cream and coffee, and with a grassed park area and benches, you can enjoy your ice cream whilst indulging upon the amazing views of Dorset. The cottage is in an ideal position for visiting Dorset and the owners are very welcoming.

It’s a shame the views down the valley can only be seen when standing up in the property. If the hedges were removed or lowered then the views would be uninterrupted. It would be helpful if the instructions on finding the property includes arrival from the Blandford direction with a sign for the farm that is visible. The cottage is in a great position just outside the impressive town of Shaftesbury. We had a great holiday in this wonderful part of the country.

About the location

SHAFTESBURY

Salisbury 21 miles; Bath 30 miles.

One of Dorset’s prettiest and most historic towns, Shaftesbury is perched on a spur of rolling green hills, and the views in all directions are without comparison. Lush green meadows, woodland glades and outstanding architecture are all within a short walk. One of the best vantage points is from Gold Hill (Ridley Scott's famous Hovis advert was filmed here) with its quaint, cobbled and very steep street. Visit the ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey (a place of great pilgrimage from the 11th century) or navigate the intricate and ancient lanes. Bath, Salisbury and Sherborne are all under an hour away, or drive through the stunning countryside of Blackmoor Vale down to the coast at Poole, Bournemouth and Weymouth. A beautiful area, that still carries the flavour of the very best of the English countryside.
