  • "Everything was perfect aside from the oven and grill not working."

George Foreman and Mike Wave helped us work around that and I trust future guests will not face the same problem. Beautiful and quiet location. The only sound we could hear at night was the stream beside the cottage. An easy 30 minute drive on good road to Portree. The local convenience store is within 5 minutes walk and open Monday thru Saturday. Just be aware that most indoor attractions are closed between October and Easter but, if properly prepared, winter is a great time to visit Skye - especially in accommodation as well heated and insulated as this one.

It was clean, well equipped and in a perfect location. The small supermarket is only a few walking minutes away, the beach can be reached after a nice walk. The Columba 1400 offers lunch and cakes for the tea time. Check the opening times. The living room offers spectacular views to the Trotternish Ridge. It is although a good starting point for many walks, give the Quiraing, Rubba Hunish and the Old man of Storr. Highly recommendable.

After a day of driving it was so nice to come back to a real home. It is in a quiet location with some nice walks and the sound of the river beside the property was so nice. Even sheep outside the back door in their paddock. Also beautiful views of the mountains out the back. The rooms were tastefully decorated and comfortable with their own bathrooms. Staying in the Mill will always be a special highlight of our trip.

  • "The cottage was extremely clean and comfortable with everything needed for a very pleasant stay."

The Uig hotel is really good for a meal and made more memorable by going via the Quiraing which is a fantastic drive amid stunning scenery. The only comment I would make would be to slightly amend the directions once you enter Staffin to read to turn left at the Columba1400 as the `bridge` is not immediately recognisable as a bridge, or even a small sign for The Old Mill at the road junction.Unfortunately the state of the roads ( particularly from Portree to Staffin) did detract somewhat when travelling around with horrendous pot holes which we were warned about. Some filling in of these potholes was being undertaken as we were leaving so hopefully that problem may be rectified in the near future.

It has everything needed for a very comfortable holiday especially when the weather is so unpredictable, as we found! The entrance has a utility room ideal for the removal of wet gear and the boot trays provided are great for your muddy footwear! The cottage has timed heating and thick curtains so is very cosy. We had taken enough food etc with us so only needed top ups which we bought en route at the Co op in Portree. Probably the only thing that could possibly benefit people would be a washing line to prevent drying inside (obviously weather permitting! We did have one day where that was possible :) ) We didn't see the owner but that's fine as we had everything we needed....apart from the weather. Thank you.

We could find no fault with The Old Mill, and were pleased to find it clean, comfortable, roomy and well-equipped. We loved it's setting by the river and enjoyed watching the wildlife out and about (we saw a stoat one afternoon!). We found the owner Liz to be kind and helpful to the point that having left most of our coats behind on the day we left (!), she kindly made the round trip to Broadford the following day to meet us and hand them over! The cottage, although situated high up in Skye, is very comfortable and well appointed. There are a few things to see, but as we were there from the Sat 22nd, most things were already closed for the holiday. Nothing much seems to be open on a Sunday anyway. Nothing at all was open in Staffin for our entire stay which meant a trip to the town of Portree (34 mile round trip) just for basic provisions. Portree is cute and worthy of a couple of hours. We visited the Talisker Distillery (one of the few places open on a Sunday) and had a nice Sunday roast in the Old Inn nearby. All told, it was ideal for a well earned period of enforced relaxation, with the fire on, watching a movie, reading or playing scrabble. Very, very nice!
