  • "Lovely apartment in the centre of Grasmere."

Good to have a parking space included. Very well appointed, clean, warm and comfortable. We stayed with my 90 year old mother and she was always warm enough even though it was only 6 degrees outside. Lovely views with windows on 3 sides. I had to be aware not to bump my head on the eaves in the upstairs bedroom. The upstairs bed is only a double, not a king which we are used to. Also all of the beds need new mattresses.

We're so glad you enjoyed your stay in Drystones. The master bedroom comes with a double bed as stated on the property listing, and all the mattresses are less than12 months old. Property Owner

  • "I had a call from maintenance team, during our stay, advising a gas safe check had been arranged for the penultimate day of our holiday."

Having seen this late (I was on holiday not monitoring my phone!) I confirmed visit ok. However on the day, despite getting ready for the visit (0900-0930), no engineer turned up. We were in and out during the day and weren't sure what to expect each time we returned. However, no visit seemingly took place and there was no further contact from the maintenance team. Maybe there was an emergency elsewhere. It didn't spoil our holiday, but the uncertainty did rather take the edge off our last full day. Lots of positives - property is well situated overlooking the river, very clean, comfortably furnished, now with a dining table in the oriel bay recess, and well equipped, and the parking is a real plus. I would go back in a heartbeat.

In heart of Grasmere but quiet at night. Lovely view from dining area overlooking stream. Apart from dearth of toilet paper the cottage was very well appointed. Kitchen had everything we could want. Everything seemed very new ( bathrooms etc). Parking space was invaluable as parking is at a premium in Grasmere. Would definitely rent again.

Had fabulous weather too. So handy if you want to hop on a bus and leave the car. Lovely tea rooms and restaurants right on the doorstep. Only problem for us - two older ladies we suggest a handrail at the very top square area at the top of the steps and somehow suggest a warning as you step over the raised door thresher coming out of the door as I had a bad fall tripping over and falling down the concrete steps. Luckily happened on our last day but resulted in a few hospital visits once home after injuring my leg. For that reason only we would not return. want to stress though that the apartment is a beautiful place.

Instructions on heating could have been more clear. Setting great. Very quiet. A little strict on check out instructions. Do the dishes in the dishwasher? Most places have you rinse and put in washer. Overall 5 stars though.

Thank you for your kind comments. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We will take a look at the check out instructions, to see if there is any amendments. We hope to welcome you back. Property Owner

  • "Sorry.. but being above a shop in a tourist attraction does not work for a bit of "R&R""

. Loud thumping music emanating up from under the hall and twin bedroom via the shop. Entrance doors to the shop when people entered/exited thundered up through the apartment. As for the property it was as expected, who would not love to wake up by the river "Rothay" with mallard duck passing in hope of a few bread crumbs, the mist topped hills from the top bedroom.

Thank you for your comments. We are glad that you were able to enjoy the views and the Rothay. As the listing does state that the property is in the centre of Grasmere, some noise is expected . The apartment is very comfy, cosy and well equipped (though more mugs and a greater range of glasses would be appreciated). The walk books are very useful and were used well (especially the walks from tea rooms). The TV was used in the evenings (but lost signal a couple of times). We love the property and will no doubt return.

  • "The house was lovely and clean and exactly what it said on the website."

We appreciated the Christmas decorations and that we found the house warm. There were few things that could be improved, first we were only given two toilet rolls for a family of four for almost a week stay. An extra roll would have been good rather than us having to buy more. Especially since this wasn’t mentioned in the list of things to bring. Or maybe you could add it to the list of things to bring! The kettle had green mould inside so we were not able to use it, sachets for regular cleaning of kettles are not expensive and extremely quick and easy to use.. just a suggestion. The frying pan has well passed its use by date, it’s all scratched and blackened by use. If you search it up you’ll see that this is actually considered a health hazard. Once again, you can get a decent pan for £20-£25, well worth the expense and I’m sure well covered by the fee charged. Apart from this the house was great, comfortable beds too.

Thank you for your feedback. Both the kettle and the flying pan have now been replaced with new equipment. As owners, we have no control over the stocking of consumables, however we're sure that your feedback is noted by Lakelovers. Property Owner

  • "Drystones was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for selfcatering."

The description was 100% correct. A couple of minor problems for me were; 1. No warning given of steps down into kitchen. We arrived quite late (after 8 pm) and my partner entered first, otherwise I think I would have fallen. 2. The bannister up to the double bedroom in the attic could not be gripped at the top. I feel that andother bannister on the oppisite side of the wall would be beneficial. The steps were wide but a little steep and I am not getting any younger (70 +) 3. The window in the attic room was difficult to close (? hinges had dropped) and window needed lifting to close. Blind was a bit of a problem as the anchor point was not very accessible, and the blind iself was heavy. Perhaps a roller blind would be better? 4. My partner is quite tall and therefore managed to reach the skylight windows to open them and also reach up to shut the blind in the skylight. A short pole to facilitate this would be more than helpful if the holiday maker was on the short side. Overall we had a lovely holiday and the accommodation was a delight and very central for exploring the lakes.

We found it clean and very comfortable, especially the sofas and sitting area. It is central to Grasmere, you walk out and are immediately in the town and yet there is no disturbance once you are inside the flat - perfect. The steps outside are steep but no problem as long as you are fairly fit. The dining alcove looks straight out onto the River and all your basic needs are provided for. It is warm and has everything you need and we would thoroughly recommend it for two couples/one family/two friends. Very satisfied, thank you.

Drystones was the perfect location for our stay and we did three excellent walks from Grasmere. Enjoyed the local pub, made sure to visit the Gingerbread House and had a wonderful meal at the Yan Inn Reading other reviews The stairs up to the property were not an issue for us - it’s just a short flight of steps - but I do wish the parking spot was in a different location. Getting out with a stream of coach party tourists crossing was nerve wracking! I left something behind at the property - and it was dealt with extremely efficiently. Thank you for a lovely stay.

  • "Drystones provides an excellent base for a walking holiday in the Lake District."

It is in a good location within the beautiful village of Grasmere, with a great view over the river below. It is comfortable, cosy and well-equipped with a good TV, Internet, cooker, microwave fridge, dish washer and washing machine. There are plenty of helpful gadgets like an iron and hairdryer, plenty of cupboards and drawers, a great many walking books (that we made good use of) and reading books and a good number of enjoyable games. The down sides were steep stone steps leading up to the property, and a low ceiling in the main bedroom. We love Grasmere and are often there at the beginning of January to celebrate my birthday - but this year the village this week was empty and closed!! - most of the hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs were closed for refurbishment or lack of staff - but it didn't spoil our stay - and thankfully The Good Sport next door to Drystones was open (except on Monday). We would recommend the property for a couple or 2 couples. Thank you.

  • "We had a really good stay in Drystones and there were only a couple of little things that stopped us giving it top marks all round."

The biggest help would have been to know beforehand how limited it would be to find somewhere to eat on our first evening, with no local takeaway of any sort and nowhere able to accommodate us for dinner we ended up having toast as we had brought the bread with us for breakfast on our first morning. I feel a note from yourselves about this somewhere on our booking confirmation would have helped, especially as we had just done a 7 hour drive. The only other issues for us was how hot it was at night in the bedroom with only a heavy weight duvet, again we bought something to get around that. Let these small points not deter from a great week, we did enjoy Drystones, great location, lovely property and we would go back.

About the location

GRASMERE

Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
