  • "Lovely properly and a great space!"

The only downside was that the shower is unusable because of the water pressure, and having to resort to using the bath when there’s 4 adults stopping there wasn’t convenient at all.

  • "Nothing about the busy, noisy road in cottage description."

It is literally outside the windows and was intolerable. Next door cottage rooms being above Carriage house also not mentioned. If there is a noisy family above (as we had!) shouting, laughing and even snoring can be heard. None of the above made for the hoped for peaceful week in The Lakes. This was a shame because actual cottage and facilities were perfectly fine.

  • "We thought the cottage was well below the rating on your website."

I think this has undermined our trust in your rating system. The cottage was well over priced for what it was . We thought it very much unloved, the upstairs bedroom is like a junk yard of furniture non of which is useful. There is one bedside lamp instead of four. The level of cleanliness is poor. The best feature is the garden which isn't easily accessible. The cottage is so close to the road I think it is dangerous for dogs and small children. To get fresh air in the kitchen you have to have the door open which means the dog can run out into the road. This isn't clearly described on the website. The cottage is also very dark. Not good value for money at all.

Lounge is not large, but perfectly adequate. The kitchen has everything you need in a relatively small space, and their are two Large bedrooms. Good location for walking into Ambleside or Waterhead as well as having a bus stop outside the door.

  • "Comfortable and not too noisy despite being next to a fast main road."

Property is within easy walking distance to the town and was much easier to find in daylight. Tea towels have seen better days and a few bulbs were out (including bedroom lamp.) Parking is limited for a "sleeps 4" property. Access to the shared private garden was misleading (it is accessed across a road) but we were aware of this before visiting (after booking) from reading other reviews.

Noise from the road is horrendous needs better double glazing. Just not a comfortable stay will not be returning

Hi. Thanks for the feedback and we will pass on your comments about the cleaning to the Heart of the Lakes team responsible. Surprised at the TV channel comments as all the terrestrial channels available along with Netflix, Sky Sports (Now TV) and Prime. You may not be aware that fewer digital channels are broadcast in Cumbria than other regions. Property Owner

  • "Great, quirky little cottage, loved the layout and the modern fixtures and fittings with an olde worlde twist."

Nice and clean. Within quick walking distance to the centre of Ambleside. Don't forget to pop over the road to enjoy the private garden. You can bat watch at sunset. The cottage is right next to a busy main road which can be noisy if you have the door open but that didn't spoil our stay. Also, aside from a tiny cleaning pack that contained a miniature washing up liquid and pad, 2 binbags and a cleaning cloth, there are no cleaning products in the cottage so may be worth packing a few. I had already packed bleach and antibac wipes so was ok. There are no supplies of tea, coffee and sugar either which we normally find available at cottages stayed at in the past, but there's a co-op, Spar and Tesco local in Ambleside so we just sorted ourselves out from there. I would be happy to stay here again. The kitchen tap drips constantly so that needs fixing

Lovely place. Would happily go back sometime. A small thing but a shaving point to charge razors, electric toothbrushes etc would be useful if ever you are refitting the bathroom.

  • "The main issue are the photographs of the cottage and the private garden, the garden appears to be attached to the cottage when in fact it is across a very busy and dangerous road, nowhere in the description of the cottage listing was this mentioned, very disappointed."

As we thought we could step out of the front door to have a morning coffee in the garden or on an evening enjoying a glass of wine - this certainly was not the case. Other issues: The mattress on the main bed needs replacing very uncomfortable. No toiletries in any bathroom as shown in you images, and generally not very clean. The front room was cluttered, too much furniture. The Freeview Channels on the TV did not work. We would not recommend this cottage or return for another holiday. Thanks Mel&Christine

  • "We had a lovely time, the cottage is in a great location and made a fab base for the week."

My only criticisms are the bed up stairs is so creaky that me and my husband ended up sleeping in the single beds and the kids upstairs as they didn’t quite make as much noise! The hot water runs out pretty quickly to if all 4 are planning baths or showers you have to be very quick or stagger them. Also there was no hairdryer. Other than that it was lovely

  • "We had a nice week at this property, and would have gladly given 4 out of 5 if it wasn't for the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in."

Like most other reviews, this is a major issue with the property. Not only is it the noisiest, but you tend to gravitate towards the middle! Replacing it would be a major plus for this let. Other than that, the rest of the property was fine for us, a bit quirky but no other issues.

The double bed was quite uncomfortable, and very noisy even when turning over. Very tired looking bedding. Otherwise, kitchen & facilities/shower were great. Pleasant riverside area despite being across the main road.

.No instructions for any of the appliances or heating /hot water . Boiler stopped working after 2 days .telephoned custom services twice but nobody came out to fix boiler to our knowledge!!! The main bed was noisy and uncomfortable. It needs replacing as soon as possible as a good nights sleep is nigh on impossible.

  • "After many years of happily staying in a Heart of the Lakes property this cottage was a very big disappointment."

We arrived after a 5 hour drive to find no hot water and a TV with no sound, we rang HOTL but ended up with a Sykes call centre. The girl seemed surprised that there was no welcome pack in fact there were no instructions for anything in the property. The problems were eventually solved by a maintenance man from HOTL. The property was on a main road and the next door property had rooms above our cottage so we often heard footsteps, doors banging and barking dogs. The kitchen crockery and cutlery was very poor in quantity especially for 4 guests, the lack of sink plug or washing up bowl did not help. The lounge had a strong underlying smell of dog and the dining table would have been very small for 4 adults. We certainly will not use this property again.

    Reviewed by David2.5Jul 2021

  • "The dishwasher was not very effective and as there was no plug for the kitchen sink, this presented a challenge for washing up!"

There were items in the kitchen that had to be washed before use as they were not clean, including the oven baking trays. There appears to be an issue with ants in the main bathroom and some were also found in the twin bedroom. The cottage overall was not particularly clean, lots of cobwebs which had clearly been there for some time. The sleigh bed creaked every time you moved on it so was not conducive to a good nights sleep. Parking was difficult and would be better if there was a marked bay in front of each cottage. Also in this cottage as it is the first as you go into the courtyard, you can't park a family size car in front of it and leave enough room to open the stable doors to the kitchen, whilst allowing space for other cars to safely pass. On a positive note, the location was good and the garden was (over the main road) was very nice. I would have no issue with booking through Heart of the Lakes again in future, however I would not return to this particular cottage unless there were improvements made - it really needs some TLC.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
