  • "We've been staying in the lake district several times a year for the last 15 years and in this price range this property is as good as it gets."

Beautiful, quiet location just a couple of minutes walk to the centre of Hawkshead. Spotlessly clean, freshly decorated, comfortable beds and furniture, good central heating system and open fire. Nice walks from the doorstep. Really impressed. We rarely stay in the same property twice but we'll be making exceptions here.

Thank you for taking the time to write such lovely feedback, it is much appreciated. We are very glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at Curlew Cottage and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Property Owner

  • "Driveway very narrow but i do have a large pick up truck."

Thank you for the lovely comments you left in our visitors book. We are glad you had a great holiday and enjoyed your stay at Curlew Cottage. Thanks also for your feedback on the driveway. We are currently exploring options to widen it and hope to offer an improved solution next year. Property Owner

  • "Curlew Cottage is a great cottage, with a lovely garden, in a fantastic location."

The accommodation was well laid out, with plenty of space for our family of four and the dog. The cottage had a great amount of hooks, hanging space, and storage, especially for our walking gear. In particular, it was great that the hallway was big enough for everyone to remove coats and boots and dump bags without stress, and the boot tray and a long mat was really helpful. Games and books were available in the lounge, which was a nice touch. We weren't so lucky with the weather, but enjoyed the wood burner in the lounge which was easy to use. Both bedrooms had comfy beds, enough hangers in the wardrobe and drawer space for the week, mirror and stool, I even found a hair dryer! Big bathroom, great for a young family. I'm always happy to see laundry space, washing machine, tumble tryer - only used once, but all in working order. The kitchen was functional with everything we needed, including a dishwasher. Curlew Cottage is located very close to the centre of Hawkshead, with an easy 2 minutes stroll to the grocery store, coffee shops, ice cream, and pubs. All in all, a great little find for half term. We will be back!

Thank you for the great feedback. We are very happy to hear you had a lovely holiday and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

  • "We’ve stayed at Curlew Cottage three times now, and really enjoy it."

The location is fabulous, close to shops and amenities, and there are lovely walks from the door. We didn’t use the car all week! The standard of cleanliness is very high (possibly even better this time?). The only issues we had were the TV and lack of an iron. The new, bigger TV is great but reception on ITV was poor and needs investigating. The iron has been mentioned in other reviews. I rang Sykes while we were there and was advised that they would try to get one delivered, but nothing appeared. With a washing machine and ironing board provided, an iron is needed, especially for a family. Despite the above slight inconveniences, we do intend to book again as there are so many positives with this lovely cottage!

Thank you for visiting Curlew Cottage for the third time and for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay and that you were able to enjoy the many walks available from the cottage. We apologise that the iron was missing and confirm that one has now been added to the property. We will also investigate the ITV reception and hope to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

  • "Hi Could you please pass the following to the owners of Curlew Cottage…."

, We’ve stayed many times at the cottage and we hope to stay again. Just thought I’d give you some constructive feedback. The garden has improved immensely, removing the overgrown conifers and cutting the rear hedge lovely to see Latterbarow. One thing that need addressing urgently is the loose slab on the back door step, if someone steps on the edge of it there could be a nasty accident. We always respect people’s properties and do our best to keep them clean and tidy and to that end I remembered that there was an outside tap, so I brought a length of hose with the correct fitting for dog and boot washing purposes only to find the water was turned off. The shower room lights are faulty and have been for years and the toilet seat has been fitted too far back. It would be great if the drive could be widened to make getting in and out of the car easier. The whole interior is looking a tad tired especially the lounge and could do with a fresh coat of paint and perhaps some new soft furnishings. All the above issues are minor (apart from the step) and wouldn’t stop us returning to our favourite place in Hawkshead.. Best regards

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We have only recently become the new owners of Curlew Cottage and are very grateful for any suggestions on how the property can be improved. We are glad to hear you appreciated the changes that have been made to the garden and thank you for making us aware of the loose slab - we will ensure this is fixed as a priority. We will also investigate the shower room lights and toilet seat so that these issues can also be resolved. We have scheduled some time at the end of the year to redecorate the property and hope to welcome you back to an updated Curlew Cottage in the future. Property Owner

  • "This is a lovely property, in a good location."

Beautiful garden, with amazing views. The cottage was well equipped, but I do think a soft broom would be handy to avoid getting the hoover out. I would definitely stay again.

Thank you for your lovely comments. We are very glad you enjoyed your stay at Curlew Cottage. We also really appreciate your suggestion to have a soft broom available, and confirm that one has now been added to the property ready for when you visit again. Property Owner

The property

Resting in the centre of Hawkshead is a charming, detached bungalow, Curlew Cottage.

Located in a private cul-de-sac, Curlew Cottage offers a wonderful base for four guests, ideal for couples, families, and friends, looking to explore the delights of the Lake District National Park.

The home has a host of features including a homely sitting room, two well-presented bedrooms, one with en suite facilities, a relaxing family bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen/diner to make some lovely meals.

There are beautiful gardens at both the front and rear of the property meaning you can relax with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Keen walkers will be spoilt for choice with an abundance of trails and fells right on the doorstep, whilst for cyclists, the cottage is in close proximity to Grizedale Forest and of course Windermere and Coniston provide a great place for a little fun on the water.

Hawkshead village itself has a fascinating literary history to investigate, perhaps while enjoying a drink in one of the excellent local pubs.

It's famously associated with William Wordsworth who attended school in the village and Beatrix Potter where today the National Trust exhibits her original artwork in the old offices of Beatrix's husband William Heelis.

Around the market square there is a delightful array of shops and cafes and with four pubs in the village there is a great choice of places to eat and drink.

Curlew Cottage is the perfect base from which to discover all this and experience a memorable holiday.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

HAWKSHEAD

Ambleside 5.1 miles; Kendal 17.4 miles.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.
