  • "We had the most wonderful family holiday in Loughrigg Cottage 26/05/23-02/06/23."

The house was very comfortable, well equipped and ideally situated for us. We loved the amazing scenery and views. There were a couple of issues that we would like to mention to you: 1. Although generally very clean and well maintained, on arrival there were extensive thick, dense cobwebs in the dining area and around most of the interior window frames! Thankfully I was able to remove most of these with the feather duster and vacuum cleaner prior to the rest of the family arriving. 2. The bed/mattress in the larger front bedroom (without an en-suite) is reportedly uncomfortable/creaky. I am aware though that mattress comfort can be subjective matter! 3. My adult daughter, who has MS, commented that a handrail by the garden steps to the patio would be extremely helpful to anyone with mobility difficulties. Overall, a beautiful holiday property that we would (and have) recommended to others.

  • "Lovely big house, ideal for a birthday celebration with the family."

We were lucky to have fantastic weather for the whole week. House was a bit cobwebby in places, although it hadn’t been booked out for a few weeks before we got there, so probably not checked before we arrived. When we arrived the electricity was off so the fridge was a bit smelly and the cooker extractor fan cover fell off when we first used it, we reported it. We would recommend this property and would book again for a family gathering.

  • "Lovely space - this was our second year, and we will book again soon for next year."

We call ourselves the Loughrigg Lassies now! 2 lounges meant we could use one for Yoga and the building itself is beautiful in a gorgeous location.

Thank you for your kind comments. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your 2nd stay. We hope to welcome you back again. Property Owner

  • "Excellent property - very clean and lovely bedrooms."

Kitchen was well equipped, and bathrooms have everything you need. Only drawback was the dining room radiator was'nt working. Other than that a great well located property.

  • "This is a first class property in a wonderful location."

It is full of character & has many attributes thanks to the owners extensive information manuals for both the amenities which are second to none & surrounding walks. If you stop here for a week you won’t be disappointed & won’t want to leave.

  • "Loughrigg Cottage is a beautiful house in a wonderful setting."

The view of the river & the hills behind from the 2 lounges is superb. We had booked for a group of 5 couples but sadly only 3 couples were able to go so we had a choice of the 3 best bedrooms, 2 of which had ensuite bathrooms. The dining room looked very traditional so we were not sure that the brightly coloured chairs fitted very well & were not very comfortable to sit on. Overall it is a beautifully furnished, comfortable warm house & felt like a home & not just somewhere to rent.

  • "Comfortable, great location, well equipped."

Crockery and glassware hadn't been well cleaned. Heating was temperamental, so could be cold downstairs. Wifi very slow (should really have satellite Wifi for such an expensive property, rather than relying on BT....) Overall a good stay, the second time we have been here.

  • "What an amazing house."

I’ve stayed in a lot of holiday rentals and this was one of the best. It was so well equipped, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. We were a group of 8 friends and it was the perfect size and really comfortable. We were blessed with beautiful weather and we loved sitting out at the table in the garden or on the deckchairs with our coffee in the morning. The views were amazing. We loved the fact we were only 8 mins walk to the local pub (we had a great dinner there) And a gorgeous 20 minute walk along to mainly traffic free lane to Ambleside. Thank you! We’ve booked for next year already!

  • "Beautiful property in a stunning location and one of the best equipped cottages we have rented."

The kitchen/dining facilities were excellent. The Bedrooms were lovely and so much storage space. The views from the windows, absolutely fantastic. We did have a problem with the big cast iron radiator in the dining room which just didn't get even lukewarm. A quick and pleasant phone call soon had a maintenance chap out who couldn't remedy the issue but did leave us some electric heaters which did the job. This is a large property and the heating needs to be on all day to keep it warm during the colder months. A starter pack of logs would have been helpful on arrival as the place was cold (we left an almost full basket for next occupants

00 was a little late and check out time of 10.00 was definitely too early - other than that the stay was really good Some logs/wood for the fire would have been good as we had to travel 20 mins to find some

  • "These are really minor things that we thought you should know, as the house is pretty much perfect, thank you."

The kitchen hot tap occasionally loses the top that is there to tell you it is the hot tap. And the sink in the bathroom of one of the master bedrooms is slow to drain and could maybe use some sink unblock or similar. It is the one that is on the front right corner of the house as one looks at the house from the front, But this was a great holiday in a lovely house, Regards Andrew

  • "The house was booked as a base for our daughter's wedding in Cockermouth."

It was perfect, with everything we could have wished for with the added bonus of a fabulous garden coupled with amazing views from the front of the house. First class property, would love to return in the future. Thank you.

The property

Loughrigg Cottage is a luxuriously grand detached Lakeland residence located in a beautiful spot with spectacular views by the banks of the River Rothay close to the famed 'Stepping Stones', in the picturesque hamlet of Rydal at the foot of Loughrigg Fell.

This is true Lakeland luxury! Loughrigg Cottage dates back to the 18th century, and was developed in the Arts & Crafts style during the 19th century, when it was occupied by Adelaide Wordsworth, the widow of Wiiliam's grandson and was once rented by American President Woodrow Wilson in 1906.

This fabulous property acts as the perfect base from which to explore the stunning valleys and fells that surround it, before returning back to Loughrigg to enjoy the comfort and warmth that lies within. It’s clear that this Grade ll listed building was purposely designed and built to command stunning views, which is rare for houses of this era.

Now, it’s the perfect place to rejuvenate and spend quality time together and enjoy period features alongside twenty first century comforts, combining gracious living, with a contemporary feel and sophistication.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
