  • "We lit the log fire on our first night as per instruction, ie, opening the baffle etc ."

. but the room filled up with smoke and all alarms were set off. (We were looking forward to getting Cosy with the log fire) we had to open the doors and kitchen window and spent over an hour wafting to remove smoke/fumes Therefore we didn't bother lighting the fire for the rest of our vacation, one of the main reasons we booked our accommodation was due to the log fire.

  • "The property is wonderful, very spacious, the log fire was a bonus and lovely views but there are a few points to note: The pictures need updating as there was no bath in the apartment."

There are steps into all bedrooms, one steep stairwell has three steps that are different heights so just be cautious, as I had an elderly relative with me. The noise from upstairs is horrendous. One night they were running around, had music blaring which was quite annoying until 11pm. There were no logs in the log store that was a help yourself affair. The cutlery and glasses were not very clean, so maybe the cleaner should check these in future following previous occupants. They ask you to strip the bedding before you leave, you only find this out when you arrive.

Perfect quiet location with loads of walking available. The apartment has been refurbished since our last visit and the main bathroom upgraded. Very comfortable lounge with fantastic views. The extra touches by the owners are much appreciated. We have stayed here many times before and can't wait to visit again. Thank you

  • "We found the Writing Room to be very comfortable for our week’s stay (3 x adults)."

It was clean, very well equipped and comfortable. We had everything we needed. Even though October, the heating was sufficient for a cosy stay. We didn’t need to light the fire. The wi fi is limited in most of the rooms. The lower bedroom has no signal at all. We took our wi if extender but it still did not work in that room. The walls are so thick so it’s understandable. One of our party was able to work on her laptop but her signal was intermittent at times. It was a quiet week, not sure how many other guests were logged on. The stairs to the lower bedroom were well lit and we didn’t find them a problem (mid sixties) I am dubious about toddlers or young children using them. The property is in an ideal location, fantastic views in quiet extensive grounds. We would be very happy to visit again.

  • "This is our fourth stay at The Writing Room and it is a bit of a family favourite."

Gorgeous location, spacious living space (though kitchen a little small for family of four), plentiful parking and good laundry and drying facility - essential for an ‘active’ holiday. The grate is easy to use and an open fire is lovely when weather wet and chilly. All that said the property is now tired and in need of some sprucing up and deep clean. One or two maintenance issues were quickly dealt by Heart of the Lakes - who are exemplary agents. Overall another great stay and I’m sure we’ll be back, but The Writing Room has lost some of it’s original shine.

We just wanted to let you know the Writing Room has just had an overhaul of bathrooms, new cloak room added and some decorating. We look forward to welcoming you back. Property Owner

  • "A charming Victorian property set in well tended grounds."

Spacious and comfortable apartment with excellent views from the sitting room. Well equipped galley style kitchen with dining table tucked in at far end. No outlook as such. The kitchen led down two steps to a bedroom with double bed in a corner with window looking out at the back yard. En suite adjacent , wonderfully soft towels provided.Comfortable firm mattress but unfortunately a seemingly old lumpy thick 13.5 tog duvet with no alternative bedding for substitution. Most self catering establishments we have been to offer alternatives eg lighter duvet or extra covers. The second bedroom was in the lower floor down a steep flight of at least 10 stairs, Sykes did not make this clear. It was spacious and well furnished but had one frosted window and needed to be lit at all times. The atmosphere seemed rather chilly. The shower room at the entrance to the apartment was well modernised and a pleasure to use. The whole of the apartment had controllable central heating. We were aware of footfall noise and voices from the above apartment.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We take all comments on board. Property Owner

Adequately equipped. Downstairs bedroom nice but not suitable for those with mobility issues ( steep stairs) . Lovely , well maintained gardens . And the amount of notices stuck up around the property were a bit condescending. If you’re the sort of people who don’t clear up your dogs poo etc , are you going to take notice of signs ?

Being so close to the Cuckoo Brow Inn was also a plus! I would definitely come back. Thank you for making it so easy to book and the info you provide was excellent.

  • "We've just returned from a week's stay in The Writing Room."

The apartment is surprisingly spacious. The double room in the basement is the larger of the two and has very steep and uneven stairs down to it (this isn't noted on the apartment description). Fortunately my parents were in the ground floor bedroom (2 steps down to access) which has a shower over the jacuzzi bath, and they used the ground floor shower room due to their mobility issues. No complaints on the quality of the bedding or towels or the comfort of the mattresses and pillows. Small but well stocked kitchen with dining area. WiFi is only accessible in the hall area due to the thickness of the walls but this is normal in buildings of this type. Well-kept and spacious gardens. Laundry room with washing machines and dryers external to the The Writing Room (you don't need to use the coin operated boxes but remember to take washing powder & fabric conditioner). It would be nice if liquid hand soap was provided in the bathrooms and kitchen - the majority of rentals do this, particularly after the covid pandemic. No issues with parking, everyone in the other apartments were very considerate. No issues with noise either although yes, you do hear people accessing the main hall but it's fleeting. We needed to contact Heart of the Lakes due to a small leak on the basement toilet and this, along with new shower heads and light bulbs, was dealt with the next morning.

It seems as though the people who had been in before us had used all the hot water in the tank before leaving. It would have been useful to have had a hot water boost. Otherwise the apartment was very good and the location was wonderful

Environment: Absolutely stunning-the grounds were beautiful and the views amazing. Ease of Access: We could walk straight out to the Tower Bank Arms, beautiful walks to Hawkshead and Wray and Windermere for kayaking. Easy to get to Grizedale and Coniston. Internet: Not great but who saved me having to do any work!!! Kitchen: All the stuff you need. Drawbacks: i) Bit more loo roll-kept forgetting to buy; ii) If the people in flat above have noisy stomping kids then this can be distracting; iii) I feel there may be some (possibly cat?) allergenic load in the place as my eczema flared and the kids were coughing throughout requiring antihistamine (I'm a doctor).

  • "Are you sure you want this to be published."

First, we have stayed in "The writing Room" before which was ok, so we thought we would give it another shot. But when we arrived the key for the outside door would not work, so we had to wait for someone else who was staying there to let us in. We informed the office who gave the wrong information to the maintenance team. So after going out then returning we had to wait in the car with the aircon on as it was quite warm in the sun until the team came out. Secondly, I would sack the cleaner as there was food splashes on and down the side of the kitchen counter and we had to wipe down where people would touch which was dirty. Third, who ever does your DIY should get another job, as the downstairs loo seat needed fixing as it kept falling down, ( we did inform the office of this problem), there were paint chipped off in places and the in the upstairs bathroom was disgusting, the bath was coming away from the tiles, the bath panel was rotten and there was filth and mould , the fan didn't work so we couldn't get rid of the steam, and lastly, we have a large estate car and when going up and down the drive the bushes would catch and scratch the sides of the car. Not only did we have that to contend with, there were late arrivers, 1:00am waking everyone up then in the morning giving a pathetic attempt of an excuse as if was all ok. So as you can imagine we will not be going back any time soon.

The accommodation was clean and well presented, however, the pillows were quite flat, and need to be replaced. The biggest problem we had was with the open fire. There should, even Must be some instruction on how to open the flue, we couldn't find it, and had smoke alarms going off all over the house!!, there is no mechanism to open and close it,(when you have found it), we have never seen one like this before. I would welcome any reply to this feedback, as I have said, we would return to this property.

Unfortunately some selfish person from one of the adjoining properties used one of our spaces for 3 days despite the fact that we put a note on the windscreen as soon as we arrived. This meant we used someone else's space with one of our cars. I would recommend that guests be obliged to provide registration numbers as part of the booking process to make it easier to identify any non conforming guests.

The suite has a large sitting room area with fireplace and bay window and super-comfortable sofas. The kitchen is well-equipped and bedrooms have en-suites with underfloor heating and heated towel rails. One even has a spa bath. Loved it.
