  • "What a lovely place to stay."

Really comfortable, clean and well laid out. Everything we needed. Had a really lovely stay and would certainly book again if heading up to the Lake district again. Thank you very much for having us.

  • "We were delighted with our stay at The Old Dairy in September 2023 for a birthday celebration."

The location is perfect and in a beautiful setting. As a family with cats it was extra special to be greeted by two very friendly cats, who even followed us into the woods for a walk. Our two year thought it was magical. The cottage is beautifully presented and interiors are homely and stylish. We will be sure to plan another trip and have recommended to all friends and family what a special place this is.

  • "We loved the Old Dairy, it was well equipped warm and comfortable."

The location is great, a walk or short drive to so many beautiful walks. The only thing to improve would be the addition of some basic kitchen ingredients such as milk/salt/pepper/oil for simple cooking.

Generally a nice area lots to do but the place wasn't worth the money as very over price stayed In a lot nicer for cost and they need to give there cleaner a tool box talk

We are glad that you enjoyed the area. If you had let us know that there was a problem with cleanliness we would have tried to resolve this during your stay. Property Owner

  • "A really lovely property - tastefully furnished, comfortable and clean, with everything we needed for our stay (a special mention for the well-equipped kitchen, as that's not always the case with holiday rentals)."

Having the log burner was a bonus and made it even cosier in the winter evenings, and although we didn't really see the owners besides receiving a warm welcome, knowing they were on site if we needed anything was nice. The location was great too - very peaceful, and a short drive from lots of interesting places to visit. We really enjoyed our stay here.

  • "This is a cottage where cleanliness is sadly of a very poor standard."

A teapot covered in a layer of dust, a large bedroom mirror covered in dust. The top of a waste bin that needed cleaning before it could be used. Cutlery and crockery with far too many pieces still having remnants of food attached to it; we had to wash it all. A shower with disgustingly dirty grouting and a shower drain that clearly needed to be cleaned out. Add in a air vent in the bathroom that didn’t work and was missing the front. Add in no logs and a very poor welcome; it left a lot to be desired. All of this is said with good intent because the owner seemed to be a friendly chap and the location is fantastic for anyone wanting to do long works without having to go to high to get great views. Across to Langdale, up to Latterbarrow or up to Black Crag are all excellent works. Lift the standard of cleaning considerably, throw in free logs, make an effort to welcome people properly and repeat bookings will increase considerably. Maybe pay for an ETB inspection and aim to achieve 5 star; it will take some work but will reap rewards in the future.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
