Take a stroll out of the cottage and into the tranquil village of Rookhope, steeped in mining history dating back to 13th century, with the very last mine closing in 1999, now the village boasts a quaint village store/Post Office.
Set off on a number of walking trails, cycling routes and bridleways, accessable from the bottom of the garden, including the Pennine Journey, a circular 270 mile, which is a Wainwright walk, alongside pretty views of serene landscapes, as well as an abundance of outdoor adventure throughout the Pennines and Bolt’s Law, over to charming villages accessed throughout the South Tyne valleys and Allendale.
Visit the nearby market town of Stanhope, meandering around a wealth of shopping facilities, cultural art galleries, fine dining restaurants and country pubs, alongside a popular indoor swimming pool and the Coast to Coast cycle route, spanning over 140 miles and resting on the railway line close to the cottage.
Venture over to the bustling city of Durham, exploring the ancient cathedral, Norman castle, medieval Crook Hall, and the dreamy Botanic Garden found at the university, where you'll find exotic plants and wildlife.
Other must-see attractions in the nearby area include the Auckland Project, Auckland Castle, High Force Waterfall and the Derwent Reservoir.
