  • "Absolutely lovely cottage and very well equipped."

The double bed was a bit of a squeeze with the high bedside tables, which we both banged our heads and elbows on and the bed was very springy, which meant we woke each other up when we turned over in the night, beside those two minor things, we couldn't have asked for a nicer cottage for our stay. Lovely clean and warm and the WiFi was brilliant. The welcome gifts were a really nice touch.

  • "Lovely cottage beautifully furnished and with all the facilities that we needed during our stay, including a perfect internet connection."

It was such a joy to return to each day. The welcome gifts on arrival were gratefully received after a long journey. Our only suggestion for the cottage is that the bed side tables are a little too tall in the double bedroom. We moved them out of the bedroom to prevent any bumps to the head . Whilst we brought most provisions with us, the local Co Op was close by for additional items. Hawkshead is a lovely village with lots of walks right from the cottage door. We had a perfect week, despite the rain, and would highly recommend Nurses Cottage.

  • "Very quirky, comfortable cottage in a great location with just a stroll into the centre of hawkshead."

Well equipped with everything you could ask for to cook your own meals and lovely garden for eating out side. (Needs new can opener) . Parking was difficult, getting in and out of the garage is pretty tight, we parked in the car repair place next door which was great. Friendly staff.

My only criticism would be that the shower could be improved as it has a poor flow and the heat settings do not respond quickly or accurately but other than that we had a perfect stay. Thank you.

  • "We had a wonderful time."

The cottage is beautiful and very well kept, in fact it exceeded our expectations. It would have been nice, though, if more had been mentioned in the blurb about the very low ceilings, particularly the area between the kitchen and the corridor, and also the central ceiling beam in the lounge. We had quite a few bumped heads! So really the property is better suited to shorter people, ie no more than 5'5". But this is a quibble really. We loved it, despite the bumped heads! One thing we should mention; on the day of departure, we noticed some minor dripping from the low ceiling onto the floor at the junction/corner of the kitchen passageway and main entrance corridor. We couldn't work out where it was dripping from. Given the age of the property, it could be tracking from anywhere. Loose or missing rooftile? We couldn't see any corresponding dripping on first floor. There had been heavy rain the night before so maybe that was the cause. It should definitely be looked at/sorted out though. Many thanks

  • "The cottage was lovely with lots of lovely crockery to use."

The garden could use a little TLC as it is quite overgrown. The only thing we would mention is the cutlery nothing matched but that is only a minor thing. The light outside the front door needs the bulb changing which we didn't like to do ourselves. The garage was a bonus especially when it was wet.

  • "This is a lovely little cottage in a fabulous position."

It is exactly what you would expect from a traditional Lakes cottage. My only suggestion would be the addition of a shower in the first bathroom but this is a minor issue. Fabulous!!

Unfortunately, there was a timer on the hot water which meant that often there wasn't enough hot water for my son's bath in the evenings.

  • "Nurses Cottage is a really delightful mixture of historical features and modern comfort in a great location."

It would have been useful ( particularly given Covid) to have a general summary of practical information either the day before we arrived or as an information sheet when we arrived eg were towels supplied or not, how the heating system/ hot water settings worked, refuse arrangements (we missed the collection day as we didn’t know when/what time)

The property

This beautiful, early 18th century two-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage was given its name by Beatrix Potter, in honour of the nurse who cared for her mother.

Dating back to 1702 this is a truly authentic cottage and the owners have lovingly and carefully refurbished the property, combining contemporary living with original features, like the original dated court cupboard.

The cottage is a five-minute walk from picturesque Hawkshead, and Beatrix Potter’s former home is just a five-minute drive.

Perfect for admirers and ideal for a family or group of couple Step into the entrance hall and marvel at the original Westmorland panelling and court cupboard, before discovering your beautiful dining room, with antiques and subdued lighting.

Walk into your sitting room and admire the 19th century antiques and spice cupboard, the attractive oak beams and the natural light flooding into the room.

This room oozes with charm and elegance.

The recently fitted breakfast kitchen has everything the home chef needs to create tasty meals for memorable family evenings.

From the kitchen walkout to see your delightful and spacious cottage garden with pretty patio.

You will also find a period walk-in larder and a utility area for drying, and storage of outdoor gear.

Climb the stairs to find a charming square landing and discover two beautifully presented bedrooms: a double bedroom and a twin bedroom.

You will also find two spacious bathrooms.

From your doorstep, you will have the choice of many superb paths and trails around the local area, as well as being in striking distance of some of the best hill walks in the National Park.

Drive four miles to Grizedale to enjoy forest walks or bike rides and to take on the Go Ape experience. For a relaxing day, drive five minutes to Hill Top Beatrix Potter’s former home or stroll to Hawkshead’s traffic free centre and visit the acclaimed Beatrix Potter Museum, run by the National trust.

Explore the historic and the beautiful, grade 1 listed village church before visiting Wordsworth’s old school.

After all that, relax with a drink in one of village’s excellent cafes or pubs.

About the location

HAWKSHEAD

Ambleside 5.1 miles; Kendal 17.4 miles.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.
