Alston 4 miles. Nestling on the hillside in the heart of the beautiful Weardale countryside, these three Alston holiday cottages are located in peaceful surroundings on an estate which once belonged to one of the leading mining families in the area. These delightful Alston cottages have been lovingly created from old hunting lodges, and each has been individually styled, retaining character and charm. Keepers boasts a delightful sun room, perfect for enjoying the spectacular views on offer, Bothy is a romantic hideaway offering a Jacuzzi bath and exposed stonework, while Chestnut is ideal for families with its open plan living area and two bedrooms, each with en-suite Jacuzzi baths. The variety of accommodation across these three Alston cottages means that up to eight people can be accommodated in comfort. Thoughtfully positioned for privacy, each of these Alston cottages has outdoor seating, a barbecue area and shared use of the large family garden, as well as the opportunity for walks on the surrounding moorland. The Isaac’s Tea Trail Walk is very popular and it crosses the estate, offering a delightful 36-mile circular walk directly from the doorstep. Why not take some time to wander down the hillside and make friends with the owners' resident alpacas or take a short trip into the nearby Cumbrian market town of Alston, the highest in Britain, which offers a selection of pubs with open fires and real ales? About the location
Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 20 miles; Hexham 22 miles; Carlisle 29 miles.
Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe and you can go down a real lead mine at Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre - a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria and Northumberland within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
