  • "Lovely cottage in great location for walking, with many walks on the doorstep."

Cottage has many period features, interesting history and felt a true get-away. Lovely view of the Old Man of Coniston from the dining room. Fire was very cosy in the evenings. Would recommend this cottage especially during the warmer seasons.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you appreciated the period features and the fascinating history of Ellis Howe. Spring weather in the Lakes is always hit and miss! Even in wet weather we love watching the fells and slopes of the Old Man changing in the sunlight. The weather comes from the West over the Old Man and Dow Crag. The clouds pouring over the peaks are a superb sight' The dining room is a superb watching place for this. Property Owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our five day break and will return, as Torver is our favourite area in which to base ourselves for our regular Lakes holidays. Splendid views towards The Old Man and Dow Crag and plenty of walks straight from the door. Highly recommended.

  • "I spent many happy years camping with family in Torver at Crook Farm, I used to walk to Ellis Howe when it was a little shop and post office so to have the opportunity to stay here was fantastic."

This cottage is a little gem, lovely place very well layed out, very comfortable and cosy, and full of character, home from home. If you want a relaxing stay and amazing views this is the place to stay. I cant wait to stay again. Thankyou. Diane & Graham (5 sept - 8 sept 2022

Thank you for your lovely comments. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your visit. We have always been conscious of the traditional character of the cottage and have sought to maintain these features. Some of the history of Ellis Howe is on the Ellis Howe website. Ellis Howe was the village shop and post office until 1979 and some of the locals still refer to the cottage as 'Mrs Pricket's shop'. Come back again soon! Property Owner

  • "I rented the property based on the listing that said that it had car parking."

In reality, you have to park on an unlit A-road on the opposite side of the road to the property against a very unforgiving stone wall. This is as close to not having parking as it can get without it being surrounded by double-yellow lines. Otherwise, both the property and our stay there was delightful.

Thank you for all the positive comments about the cottage and those reflect many others who have stayed at Ellis Howe. Over 20 years living in and letting out the cottage for holiday guests we have had no problems whatever with the parking arrangements. Often we have had two or three cars and workmen's vans parked there . The occasional walkers park there with no problems, but even then there is room to park safely. There is almost no traffic after dark. I am very surprised that this has been an issue! Property Owner

  • "A beautiful cottage, pleasure and joy especially waking up to the cows on the first morning at the fence."

A few minutes walking to the pub, the only downside was the parking, lay-by narrow on a busy road, especially at weekends. Found it difficult parking my car due to length and in the end parked at the pub for the rest of the week and frequented it daily after dropping car off

Inside you'll find many original features including flagged floors, window shutters and exposed beams for a characterful atmosphere.

A wonderful setting to enjoy family meals, the dining room is oak-floored with gorgeous views of Coniston Old Man and the surrounding fells.

Set the table for five whilst the family chef prepares a hearty dinner in the kitchen, well-equipped for your self-catering stay, whilst the neighbouring utility hosts a washing machine.

After long walks, rest your feet in front of the multi-fuel stove and snuggle up for a move on the Smart TV; you'll find lots of entertainment to choose from with a DVD player and selection of books, games, DVDs and CDs.

For a quieter evening, choose a book and escape to the snug, or why not make the most of your peaceful surroundings?

Outside you'll find a picnic table to dine alfresco and admire the views with a cold beer in hand; there's also a seating area to the front and a garden planted with roses, shrubs, bulbs and perennials.

Head straight to the ground-floor shower room to freshen up after muddy walks or end the day with a relaxing bubble bath in the upstairs bathroom.

Retreat to one of the three beautifully decorated bedrooms, a double, a twin and a single to rest up ready for a brand-new day of adventures.

Discover the picturesque setting of Torver with the local pub The Wilsons Arms aswel as convenience store - Torver Deli to stock up on the essentials, whilst plenty of walks await in the surrounding countryside.

Dramatic fells include Coniston Old Man, wild woodlands and wonderful Lake District walks, along with access to no end of stunning routes, from leisurely strolls to challenging ascents.

Consiton Water is famous for its part in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, with Peel Island being the setting for the 'Wild Cat Island' featured in the story; for more local culture, visit the historic Brantwood House museum and gardens, once the home of artists John Ruskin.
