  • "Rosewood is a fantastic Scandinavian style cottage right on the river."

Excellent location for some beautiful walks right from the doorstep. We stayed over Christmas and there was a heavy rain storm but the river showed no signs of reaching the cottage. Well equipped rental with very comfortable beds (not to mention the stunning views of the river from the bedrooms). Floorboards are very creaky but I think that just adds a little quirkiness to the place.

  • "We arrived the day before the heaviest snow in 40 years and roads became impassible for a couple of days."

However, it was not a hardship being confined to Rosewood and we were very grateful for the generous supply of logs provided. We have stayed in Skelwith on many occasions and have long admired Rosewood’s style and position. We were not disappointed. Gorgeous fittings and furniture in every room with every attention to detail. Only thing I couldn’t find was a serving plate big enough for the turkey dinner I cooked!!

Second time I have stayed at Rosewood and I will be back it makes me so happy to be there. Could we have a potato masher please !

Thanks for your feedback Leanne and delighted that you enjoy Rosewood as much as we do. And potato masher fixed - we've bought a new one! Sorry for inconvenience Property Owner

  • "A stunning home away from home."

At the rivers edge with the soothing sound of streaming water to accompany our days. Only niggle is why they can’t be bothered to supply the house with enough toilet paper, dishwasher tablets and tea towels for 8 people. What was given to us barely lasted 2 days… A minor cost to the owners given what we paid for the week’s rental.

Wonderful location and facilities, especially the log burner and the sun room. We are looking forward to returning. Ps the wine and chocolates mentioned did not materialise, but it wasn’t a big deal just letting you know.

Thank you for your kind comments, we are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay, We take all comments on board. We hope to welcome you back again. Property Owner

Really good location for getting out an about as well. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending Rosewood by the river...we loved it!!

  • "Star rating would be higher but for the preparation of the property."

As always at Rosewood (unlike other Lakeland properties) a generous welcome basket thank you. Most other aspects were fine as usual at Rosewood. Cleanliness was poor however. Some detritus from previous occupants including some food on ‘clean’ crockery (at the of of the pile) and a generous helping of nail clippings let you down. Also do you get the windows cleaned at Rosewood?

  • "Fabulous stay thanks!"

What a place to enjoy the new year, we will return! Just a minor thing is the lack of kindling for the fire…. and perhaps a Few more loo rolls to get us set up before hitting the shops after a long drive.

  • "Rosewood is a beautiful property in an absolutely brilliant location."

It carefully mixes new and modern fittings with a cosy and homely charm and there is plenty of space for a party of eight. There is an abundance of walks for all abilities right from the front door and although it wasn’t open whilst we were there, Chester’s looked lovely. Finally, the owners were friendly, welcoming, helpful and attentive - all in all an exceptional stay. We hope to be back!

I stupidly left this blouse on a bed and I know this is my fault and that Lakelovers take no responsibility for this situation but it has rather depressing implications and feel perhaps the owners should be made aware of this incident.

Excellent eco-friendly accommodation for eight in sought-after Skelwith!

A love-seat pagoda sits by the rocks and rivulets of the Brathay in the picture-perfect garden of Rosewood By The River, and a luxurious and generously sized garden dining set awaits you on the patio.

This is a place to retreat to with friends and family and relax fully in the finest of Lakeland locations! Like a wooden house from a fairytale, Rosewood By The River perches charmingly on the banks of the Brathay as it flows through the pretty hamlet of Skelwith Bridge.

Mature shrubs and trees surround the eco-friendly structure, ideally suited to its surroundings, and the green and shady garden is a magical place to sit and listen to the soothing sound of the waters slipping by. Inside, the pale greys of the living area are perfectly in tune with your need for relaxation, and the comfortable yet elegant furnishings are echoed throughout, including in the superb glass-ceiling sun-room, and in the sophisticated kitchen, which offers you the pinnacle of the country living experience.

Excellent use of glass in Rosewood extends to the bedrooms, and your private retreats are spacious, stylish and pleasingly light-filled. Skelwith boasts an excellent hotel with walker's bar, along with the well-loved cafe Chesters By The River, which offers a genuinely addictive selection of fine cakes and pastries, excellent coffee, amazing salads, and a winningly relaxed atmosphere for sitting out on the verandah on a sunny day.

There is a lovely gift shop attached, too, and we're sure your party will want to stock up on picnic materials here! Rambling paths run through the fields and woodlands in all directions towards Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere and Elterwater.

The latter sits in the Great Langdale Valley, in whose mouth your holiday retreat lies.

Along with Little Langdale, this is one of the most stunning and sought-after areas in Lakeland, and is full of excellent exploring, climbing, biking and hiking opportunities, including routes up the iconic sharp-peaked Langdale Pikes. With popular Ambleside and all the attractions of Lake Windermere in easy reach, the location, like the property itself, is a real winner!

Rosewood By The River will quickly become a family favourite when you stay with us here.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
