  • "A wonderful stay!"

The cottage is beautifully finished and built for comfort. We started our days watching day break from the living room window with our morning coffee. As night turns to day the hills come into focus, the view is spectacular! For a city couple like us it was really special. I recommend this cottage to anyone, local pubs are great and lakeside taxis reliable and always happy to accommodate dogs, should you want to leave the car for an evening and head into bowness for dinner. I honestly cannot wait to come back.

Hi Kelly and what fantastic comments from you! The views are spectacular as you say and really glad you enjoyed your stay here. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Rob & Rachel Property Owner

  • "Cottage is in a great location and perfect for walking."

Garden perfect for active dogs. wet room is fab after a day out and if you are a bath lover it has everything you need. Few bits for the owner some probably personal preference. I agree with a previous reviewer that a smaller bed in one of the rooms would work better as limited space to manoeuvre and could do with more storage space. Similarly if you're a cook there's limited cupboard space in kitchen but the little trolley did ok. Personally and as a dog and pet lover, I wouldn't have carpet in main living space as it did smell quite a bit of dogs and hard floor is easier to maintain and clean. on a night when sat with hearing on was quite overwhelming smell.

Hi Karen and thank you for letting me know. Rob. A note for future guests: Following this review a precautionary deep clean has taken place and we are ensuring that the cottage carpets are sanitised each week. This ensures we are retaining the cosy aspect of the lounge area whilst also welcoming furry friends. Property Owner

Ideal location within easy walking distance of 2 pubs, loved the pies at the Queen's Head! The cottage was very comfortable and welcoming after a day's walking and the dogs loved the garden. Lots of places to sit out and enjoy the view with a glass of wine when the weather allowed. Could do with some more supportive pillows on the beds but that's personal choice. Thank you for a fabulous stay.

Hi Emma and thank you for your kind feedback. We will take a look at the pillows and change where necessary. Glad you enjoyed your stay and hopefully look forward to welcoming you back soon! Rob & Rachel Property Owner

Two things we would recommend - 1. More cutlery and mugs for the property 2. The king size room, change to a double bed ( with under bed storage) to allow more room round the bed and more storage for clothes, as it was very limited

Hi Darren. Thank you for your comments and noted. We have found that guests prefer the comfort of king-sized beds along with the wardrobe for clothes. Many thanks again. Rob Property Owner

  • "Great property, super clean, fabulous views from the balcony."

Did a few walks from the door which was lovely. Good base for other adventures too. Drive a little snug at the top for our Sportage but once down the drive the parking space was good. Garden was handy for the dog but not enclosed so remember your flexi lead. Unfortunately the hot water was affected for the first part of our stay but we were notified before we arrived & electric shower and hot water tap meant we could manage until the issue was fixed. Rob was in contact throughout and managed to sort it whilst we were out one day. Definitely would return -however as dog owners we wouldn’t say this is the most dog friendly place we’ve stayed as no enclosed garden & no dogs upstairs rule (without a gate to stop them) could be tricky for some to manage for a week. Our dog was fine but we know others that this wouldn’t work well for.

Hi Emily and thank you for your feedback. You were more than accommodating when we had to install a new water heater, so thank you. A lot of our guests book for a stay with a dog and do manage everything well. Be great to see you back again. Rob & Rachel Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting."

Great views from the house. WiFi was at times a little patchy but generally OK. The driveway entrance/exit is very narrow. I scraped my car on the way out. Our holidaying neighbours in the adjacent cottage also inflicted similar damage on their car. To be fair the owners do note the narrow entrance in their description of the cottage. But I do wonder whether anything more could be done to widen the entrance in order to avoid further (expensive) mishaps. There is plenty of adequate parking space once the entrance has been negotiated. Other than that we enjoyed the location and the local pub food and I would recommend it to future holidaymakers.

Hi Emmet and thanks for your feedback. The driveway is fine for most guests but I acknowledge that it can prove difficult for some. Great to hear you had good time and hope your painful bad back cleared up! Rob & Rachel Property Owner

It has everything you need in a holiday cottage. It was so restful there and we were lucky that we had sunshine for a couple of days. I don’t like reviews where people focus on negatives instead of saying what the positives were. Troutbeck is a nice village with the shop etc. You can walk from door with lots of fab walks close by. We would definitely stay again. The owner was lovely and the wine and cake appreciated.

Very well equipped and comfortable. Has everything you need and a nice welcome pack on arrival. Only a short walk to both local pubs where you will find a nice welcome and great food. Supermarket only 10 mins down the road if you need it. The owners have spared no expense on this cottage and the place is a credit to them. Nice garden for the dogs and sitting out in the sunshine to admire the views. If you take dogs with you keep them on a flexi lead in the garden. The fences at the bottom are not secure into the field and there is livestock. (Fence was farm responsibility and not a reflection on the cottage) Barn just through the trees and they were lambing during our stay. With regards the narrow drive mentioned in other posts don't let it put you off. Up and down all week in a double cab pickup without incident. Just take your time. Little gem of a holiday cottage and I'd book again without question.

We contacted the owner who disappointingly told us his cleaner is very thorough and it was Bizarre ! The whole cottage could do with a good clean , the silicon mat on the counter top was full of food bits. The middle floor had a dog smell. I know this cottage allows dogs we also have a dog , We have stayed many times at the lakes in lots of luxury cottages , that allow dogs and this has never been an issue. This cottage is finished to a very high standard with lots of excellent appliances and furnishings in a good location but the cleanliness let it down unfortunately.

Hi Louise. As you will know my comment to you was in response to a photo you sent to me and which was impossible to make out, so out of context a little unfair! I do appreciate your comments however and I have discussed them with our housekeeper who also acknowledges them. Rob Property Owner

A welcoming pack of wine, fruit cake and coffee pods were a lovely touch. There are stunning views across the surrounding valley and the location is perfect for exploring the area, with a circular walk from the cottage to Ambleside, over Wansfell Pike, a particular highlight. The 2 pubs in the village are warm and welcoming, with good quality food available every day, and the village shop / cafe is a fantastic asset. There were 2 drawbacks with the property - the driveway is very narrow and curved - an issue with a large car getting down to the car parking area (Land Rover Defender). The other is the Wifi strength, with 4 Smart TVs and then visitors' devices connected, this had to be re-booted when the service ground to a halt. Less of an issue if the modem had been in the cottage. (Likewise the remote Hive control of the heating meant the cottage was cold for early risers) Otherwise a wonderful stay in a superb location; would recommend

Hi Heather. If only you had let me know I could have easily accommodated your early mornings! I appreciate that there was an issue with the internet during your week but all good now. Hope to welcome yourselves back soon. Regards Rob Property Owner

The decor and furniture is beautiful with a peacock theme throughout. A well laid out kitchen with a great range of equipment, crockery and utensils - and underfloor heating which was a joy given we were there in a bit of a cold snap! The sitting room is very spacious with a great view over the stunning countryside. It’s so peaceful and quiet. If you fill up the bird feeders outside, the birds come in their droves! The main bathroom has a great bath and great lighting to enjoy a glass of gin (in my case) or wine (his nibs) and relax. The king sized bed is very comfy and even I slept well! It’s walking distance to the two pubs, always a plus! and The Post Office Tearoom offers great food and even has a shop area which is very handy. We can’t recommend The Cosy Peacock enough - it is the best cottage we have stayed in.

Troutbeck is a great location - free of tourist crowds but close to main centres of Windermere and Ambleside. Also two excellent pubs within walking distance of the cottage. Cottage is very well equipped and the lounge area in particular is a great space to spend time, with an open balcony looking across the valley. Very good shower and wifi - key needs for us! Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ can also be accessed via the TV - although we didn't end up using them. Lots of good walks from Troutbeck or a short drive up over the Kirkstone Pass. Only thing to watch out for is that, as others have pointed out, the driveway down to the parking area is pretty tight, and challenging if you have (like us) a big car. We managed it with no scrapes, but just be aware!

Also, we found that the heating of the property was not adequate, especially when compared to the amount we had paid for the weeks hire of the property. The kitchen, their was not enough range of trays etc to use with the large range oven, also not enough storage space for food etc. Not enough mugs and cups, glassed too delicate to use, No hand rail for the upstairs bathroom, for when leaving the upstairs bath/shower, you could hold on to the towel radiator, but if this was on, you would find it impossible to hold on to it for support. Light switches, too many, too confusing. However, good location, and we love troutbeck.

Thank you for your feedback Matthew and for sharing your views. As you know we contact all visitors just prior to their stay to ensure they have our number so we can respond quickly to any queries or issues that may arise. We did, however, find the parking rather daunting. I’m sure it is much easier to manage with a Range Rover or similar highly raised vehicle but not so easy with my daughter’s Audi which she ‘dinged’ on one occasion. Really think it would be helpful to alert future holiday cottage renters to the steep drive to help to avoid potential parking problems. Having said all that, I would definitely recommend The Cosy Peacock to friends as a really delightful and comfortable holiday cottage. My daughter and I love Troutbeck and have stayed in this beautiful area on several occasions in the past and I’m sure we will be back here in the near future.

Many thanks for your feedback Pauline and really glad you have enjoyed your stay with us at Troutbeck. I appreciate your comment of your experience of the traditional Troutbeck architecture however Troutbeck is a Conservation Area and it is imperative to maintain the historic aspect. Troutbeck is wonderful area. Parking for the Cosy Peacock is very tight and a big 4x4 car won’t be able to use parking for cottage. Downstairs shower was not working & needed to be replaced which was replaced over (two days). No water for 24 hours due to United Utilities, container of water delivered 2nd day onwards.

Hi John. Thank you for your feedback but I must say your score is rather unfair. I made it very clear to you before you arrived that the shower needed to be replaced and effected a remarkably quick turnaround to ensure you had the use of the additional shower for your stay (which you seemed to be very grateful for). In addition the lack of water was not down to ourselves but down to United Utilities. The lack of water was reported on Sunday evening and a water container was delivered in to you the following day which most people would say is pretty good?! (Which you seemed to be very grateful for). The parking to the cottages is tight due to the historic nature of the properties but many large vehicles use it on a regular basis. Rob. Property Owner

The Cottage has been furnished to a high standard no expensive spared on quality of fixtures and fittings, really thoughtful, tasteful items, and everything you could wish for in the kitchen. The Juliette balcony provided a beautiful view, so we made the most of opening the doors and enjoying a glass of wine taking in the view. Welcome pack was a nice touch, good quality items which we enjoyed. The cleanliness could have been better, especially in the bathroom, slow draining, mouldy grout things that you’d address in a deep clean rather than a quick change over. Also the low level fridge was missing the drinks shelf so that limited space when you had to put milks and juice in the fridge so that needs replacing. Signage at the top if allowed would be useful as the Sat Nav overshoots and down a lane, the driveway is quite narrow and we damaged our car on the flint wall but we have a very large SUV but that shouldn’t deter you from booking the Cosy Peacock as the pluses far outweigh the minuses. Our love affair with the Lakes will continue, thank you.

  • "We had a great holiday in the Lake District."

The location of the cottage is fabulous for exploring the area, and Troutbeck is wonderful (especially with the fields full of lambs!). The underfloor heating and radiator in the bathroom didn't work, we tried to follow the instructions to turn them on. We were told (by Rob) the instruction sheet left there was for next door and a tradesman was coming to replace the radiator the next day, so clearly it was a known issue. It would have been courteous to have been told in advance. Leaving keys out for someone to access the property wasn't ideal, and the tradesman was in the house for over two hours so we couldn't access the upstairs. Things breaking/needing replacing are to be expected but the situation could have been handled much better with warning and an apology for any inconvenience. Both beds are zip beds (two joined together) but the smaller one didn’t have a mattress protector on so it was uncomfortable. Before we booked I did ask if one of the rooms had zip beds to make into single beds but was told this wasn't possible (not sure why). Both bedrooms only have one light switch by the door so if you're sleeping on the far side you can't turn the light on/off! Strange design especially when the lounge has so many light switches! The kitchen doesn't have any empty cupboard space to put any food, it's a lovely looking kitchen but isn't practical. A few other small things; the inside fridge door is broken, the wheels on the dishwasher tray need replacing and the wok was left in a dreadful state (I sent Rob a photo of the wok so he knew we hadn't ruined it, his response was the cleaner has a short window between guests). The house could have been cleaner, I’m not sure it had been hoovered especially the stairs. Nevertheless we loved the Lakes and will be back.

Dear Sonia. Gosh, wow - so many things! Obviously Cosy Peacock is not for you but you seem to have forgotten the special things we did for you like helping you with your pushbikes to say the least?? The drive is very steep and very narrow and parking can be an issue…. But it is everywhere in troutbeck. Long estate cars or big SUV’s may struggle. Storage space seems limited but in fairness , 4 adults and one dog managed adequately for a week in winter… the cottage description did not mention a washer/drier so we all brought too much stuff, perhaps this needs adding to the description. These points in no way detracted from our stay which we thoroughly enjoyed. The owners were superb when we contacted re issues with a heated towel rail. About the location

TROUTBECK

Windermere 3 miles; Ambleside 4 miles.

The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. The ‘Windermere Steamboat Museum’ displays a fascinating collection of boats whilst children will enjoy the ‘World of Beatrix Potter’ in Bowness, where technology brings her characters to life. Within easy reach of destinations such as Coniston Water, Kendal, Keswick and the Lakeland Mountains, Troutbeck is ideally situated for exploring all that the region has to offer.

No babies or children under 16.
