  • "We loved this cute cottage tucked away in Whitby."

Facilities were all good. A fully equipped snuggly place. I would live to know more about the history of the cottage. We loved the starry skyviews from the skylight in bed at night. I personally enjoyed watching the work at Parkol from the bathroom window. Where else would you see ships being built.....amazing. The distance to the town was just great, however if your not a walker or cannot deal with steps this isn't for you. We would stay again. Many thanks. Mr and Mrs Hardy plus two happy dogs

  • "I think you need to get over to this place ASAP."

It is nothing like in the photos. Handrail on steps is covered by ivy and weeds. The smell of damp on entering. Dangerous bottom step on stairs. Views out of the windows are disgusting. Rusty metal and overgrown garden. I read a previous review and the owners stated rubbish in the garden and builders working from 8am to 5pm was going to be short term in October. Christmas week and they are still there hammering and drilling. The frying pan was filthy. Cupboard for plates absolutely reeked of damp .you need to sack your cleaner if you have one. Couldn't use the shower or bath safely and there is nothing to hold on to getting in or out. My husband and I were just looking for a basic place as we would be out and about.. Would definitely not recommend. Very disappointed.

  • "We have stayed in many cottages all over the uk with different holiday companies and have used Sykes before, however this experience has left us feeling we will not use Sykes again."

The cottage had a number of extremely disappointing issues and is misrepresented on the Sykes site. If we were aware of misrepresentation then we would not have booked it. Location - on the Skye site for Tate cottage on the map it marks the cottage to be on Church Street, very close to the town centre. However it is actually on Horse Road 0.3 miles away. This is also directly opposite and ship manufacturing yard (Parkol) with large cranes, this is not what we expected for a view. Outside the cottage - The Sykes site did say “That the property neighboring to Tate Cottage, is undergoing some temporary building work”. We thought this would be fine as we were planning on being out most of the days while there. However you have to pass the entrance to the cottage that was having the work done and they have used there garden as a skip with piles of building waste just thrown on the grass, that clearly been there for some time. Again the view of this is appalling. There was a small table and chores outside to sit out however the table was rusty and could have marked our clothing if in contact. Inside the cottage - The moment we walked in the smell of damp was overpowering, just awful. We opened windows etc but could not get rid of it. some of the walls were cladded with wood and you could see the damp coming through. I also found multiple dehumidifier boxes in locations around the house, clearly a big problem. My wife suffers with asana and breathing issues and this made it horrendous. For 3 days all she wanted to do was go home. Very very disappointing and would not recommend this property to stay in. I also have many photos if you wish to see. I think someone from Sykes need to visit this property to see it first hand.

We are sorry that you had difficulty locating the cottage due to an error on the listing. This was rectified immediately. Following on from your feedback, which is valued, we have taken the property off the market and had experts investigate your concerns. Whilst there is some evidence of previous water damage, no evidence of damp was found. The dehumidifiers in the property are to reduce humidity caused by modern double glazed units in an old property. We have addressed this by increasing the ventilation through out. Our cottage is a quiet base, tucked away from the main road so unfortunately a harbour view is not something that we can offer, however, it is a beautiful short walk down the harbour front to town.
