The cottage was clean, comfortable and well fitted and everything we hoped for. Whilst we did not feel comfortable sitting in the courtyard which was dusty and untidy the location of the cottage was excellent. This did not detract from our enjoyment.

I did not think the accommodation was suitable for dogs as the small outside space was also the entrance to several other properties and the alley up to the main road had no gate on it so constantly had to keep an eye on them.

"We thought it was a lovely holiday home."
Very comfortable with good facilities. We weren’t sure if we could sit on the outside table as a neighbour kept using it!! We thought the parking had been explained very well and did not find it an issue at all.
We are pleased you had a nice time
We have since had new furniture at the front of the cottage and the chairs are stacked and locked together .There is a code in the cottage so you can free them so others don't use them

"Thank you for a wonderful stay in our favourite Whitby."
It’s been our 4th holiday to Whitby and the cottage itself was my favourite property that we have stayed in. We loved how it was tucked away but still right in the centre. The location was perfect.
We loved how many of the original features remained and have been well looked after. Each room was cosy, spotlessly clean and inviting.
A few tweaks that we felt could have made this perfect… The shower screen could do with an upgrade. The suction at the bottom that holds the screen in place is too loose and any slight movement causes it to come away leaving the bathroom floor very wet and the bathroom window only stays open if you use something to prop it up.
I’m not sure who is in charge of the alleyway and courtyard but it could do with a little TLC. Whilst I appreciate this is nothing to do with the property itself, it could do with a tidy up and a good sweep which will make the property even more appealing.
The bedrooms were very specious, the main bedroom on the 1st floor had beautiful high ceilings which made it very light and airy but the mattress wasn’t the comfiest. It felt quite thin.
The room on the top floor was perfect for the kids. The slanted roof did make the space around the bed awkward but the kids were fine so it’s definitely better for kids up there.
Lastly there is no Wi-Fi in the property. Which is fine if you have an unlimited data package but if you don’t then you may struggle.
All in all we had a wonderful stay and even looking to book the same property again next year. Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback .we are pleased you had a nice stay
The alley way and yard are public and we do clean it whenever we go but it is difficult to keep spotless
There is unlimited wIFI at the property
We are pleased you found the cottage convenient and are thinking of visiting again

"Comfortable, clean and well appointed especially the kitchen & lounge."
Fabulous for amenities. Great example of historical “living”. * Parking is a major issue with an immediate parking bay (zone H), scratch card marked zone W & a disc but the map is pale and with limited info and NO info on disabled parking badges. No info on public car parks. A huge stressor for me. * Visitor info pack (VIP) no info on how to change bath to shower tap - turning it simply took it off in my hand, luckily my partner reinstated it. VIP was a rather disheveled booklet & could do with refreshing. * Bedroom acoustic attenuation very poor with creaking floor (loft) disturbing occupant below and lack of a door causing light & noise disturbance from below to occupant of loft bedroom. * Can’t turn 1st floor landing light off from loft bed/top of loft stairs. * At 5’2” I could only get out of 1 side of the loft bed & even then had to bob my head under the rafter. I cannot see how 2 adults could get in & out of that bed without head injury. A framed metal bed made it harder to get around - it would be better to have the 1st floor divan bed there. * Rather romantic referring to loft dressing table as lighting poor. * Had to hang dresses in the 1st floor bedroom as insufficient height of hanging in loft bedroom.
I provide disc parking near property for 1 hr and further down the road for 3 hrs and for overnight, and I also provides scratch cards for the surrounding areas, plus there is a map at the property and the areas are clearly highlighted. A few streets away from this four floor property there is also free parking Sep to Apr.
There is a knob at the bottom of the shower hose, for the option to change from bath to shower and vice versa.
The attic room does have a metal bed as per the advert picture which also shows the low ceiling height in that room- for this reason a wardrobe cannot be accommodated in there although the other bedroom has a full height wardrobe. The attic room while not having a door, is also on a separate 4th floor accessed from a balustrade/staircase and so has complete privacy.
The attic does have floorboards and this may be the noise heard below, although it is highly unusual to receive feedback about any noise of this kind.
The dressing table does have lamp near the mirror and also spotlights, it is possible that when a master switch was turned off during your stay that you also inadvertantly turned these lights off.
With this property being city centre Whitby, we would always recommend that guests contact Sykes Cottages' reservations team regarding any particular need or special enquiry, so that they can be full informed before deciding if this four floor city centre property is suitable for them and we are sorry that the property did not suit you on this occasion.

"The location of the property is perfect - right in the middle of the town and only a few yards from the harbour, but when you're in the property you don't feel as though you're in the centre of things."
The location meant we could nip back to the property if needed, regardless of where we were in town. The property was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed during our stay. Parking is an issue at the property, as it is for any resident of the town. A parking disc is provided for unloading cases etc but then you have to park in the surrounding streets with a second type of permit - also provided. That's just how it is if you want to stay in the town itself. The only other thing if mention is that the property is on 4 levels, kitchen in the basement (it has windows and an outside door), living room on the next floor up and then two bedrooms on successive floors. It wasn't a problem during our stay but would be an issue for people with mobility problems. That said, a great little property that we intend to return to at a later date.

"Property was nice and clean but I had to clean the entrance alley way on the first day as the pigeon droppings were disgusting and were going to be walked into the building - it was all back within 3 days or so - not the owners fault but pretty disgusting."
The parking permits that were provided were out of date (2021) and the parking in the Cliff St car park was confusing with out of date signs and we got a fine the first day. The single glazing wasn't enough to keep out the sound of the gulls from 5am and this was the biggest problem. A great location but the worst stay we've had in Whitby so far. We cut it short by a day just to get some sleep away form the gulls...... Shame.

"I have to agree with the previous comment that the cottage was not overly clean."
The bathroom was grubby, the shower door leaked & behind the toilet was dusty & dirty. The beds were very uncomfortable & you could feel the springs in the loft room mattress. I appreciate the cottage being homely but with COVID-19 I don’t feel it appropriate to have fabric hearts on the walls or tied to beds as they are not cleaned and the wooden heart on the bedroom wall was covered in cobwebs. The dish of shells in the lounge was covered in dust. The kitchen blinds & sills were also dusty & grubby. We also struggled to get the heating to work so at times it felt very cold. However, the cottage was central, easy to get around from to see the sights and explore which we very much enjoyed. I’m sorry to leave a negative review but with back to back bookings, I think some upkeep needs to be undertaken.
Thank you for your response
We have addressed the cleaning issues and have a new cleaner who does a marvelous job .
We have had no complaints before about the beds and when we stay we find them comfortable but accept this is personal choice.our reviews recently in the guest book have been lovely unfortunately most people who respond on line have negative feedback which is unfortunate for us

"We were advised we couldn’t have early entry as due to COVID deep cleaning was required."
The property had most certainly not been deep cleaned, in fact I had to clean the bathroom including the shower head prior to using as it was disgusting. The kitchen had a damp smell the whole time we were there. We got the impression there was a washing machine and there wasn’t. The parking is definitely an issue at busy holiday times, you were scared to leave your space after eventually found one as there were none to be had and after paying quite a bit for accommodation we were loathe to pay for parking. We will most definitely not be back to this property.
Thank you for your comments I have raised the cleanliness issues with my cleaner and I will ensure that any issues are rectified. There is no mention of a washing machine in the property description however, I have taken this on board and will look into maybe having one put in. Parking within the centre of Whitby is difficult like most town centres. I do provide a map that shows where parking is available. I also provide a scratch card for you to be able to park in a car park.

"The Robins was a nice cottage and provided us with a town centre base."
A couple of things would have made the stay better:
Proper parking. We had intended to come by train but were forced to change plans and had to drive. Although Parking Disc/Sticker provided with the cottage these could only be used in a very limited location/time so we were forced to pay £8 a day at a car park which had to be renewed daily as there is no facility to buy a long stay.
There is no dishwasher, which whilst not the worst thing to lack, still took an edge off as we were forced to eat in for most of the stay due to the busyness of Whitby at half term (we were there a year late) and Covid restrictions making getting into restaurants and cafes in the evening almost impossible.
Finally although the bed looked nice, and was generally comfortable, it's springs creaked at the slightest movement which meant it was hard to get an undisturbed nights sleep.

"Robin's Nest is a really great cottage!"
Very clean, nicely decorated and extremely comfortable - it has all the amenities required for a good holiday. In terms of location, it is in a historic Whitby "Yard" and is very close to the centre of town (very short walk to the Whitby swing bridge). We really enjoyed our stay and did loads.
In Whitby, in general, parking is a nightmare. The cottage provided a parking disc and scratchcard permits for the duration of the stay, which helps, but be prepared to plan around parking times. We generally found spaces close by, and parking is usually available at the leisure centre (about 5 mins walk away).

"A great place, but it is very, very noisy as it is in central Whitby near pubs and an insanely large and talkative seagull population and the cottage has no double glazing!"
(Please bear in mind we have plenty of seaside holidays and are quite happy to hear seagulls. However, the seagull population of an active fishing harbour with a fair few of them on your roof most nights, they do not appear to sleep even at 4am lol, is a very different matter and is where double glazing is a marvellous modern invention!) The pub down the road has a regular karaoke night and you can name the songs to give you some idea of how the noise carries into the house! The beds are also quite creaky as they are metal framed beds, although they are very comfortable. We went and bought some ear plugs in the end! Having said all that, once you get used to the noise and have your ear plugs it is a lovely, clean and spacious place to stay, it's convenient for Whitby, has a lovely coffee shop on the corner and we were really excited to book again for next year to stay again.
Its worth noting for anyone with mobility difficulties that the kitchen, living room and 2 bedrooms are each on separate floors, and the top bedroom/ attic is nice and cosy but if you have mobility difficulties you might find it a little tight to get in and out of bed.
With regards to parking, you can only park on the street outside for an hour if you have a parking disk; you cannot buy a parking ticket for this area, so you will need someone to sit in the car or pop a note in the car window to tell the (very active and prompt traffic wardens) that you have popped in to get your parking disk (on the coffee table in the cottage on the first floor when you get in) to pop it in the car before you start unloading. You can park on the street for free from 7pm - 9am. There is also a car park behind the Poundland. This requires paying from 9am - 6pm. This is a short stay car park and you can only buy a 6 hour parking ticket from this ticket machine, so not enough for a whole day. It is worth noting however that parking tickets you buy can be used in any Scarborough car park, and the long stay car parks are on the sea front (West Cliff) and Whitby Abbey. We saw quite a few parking tickets being given out so it is worthwhile planning your parking if you are planning on staying in the town for the day.
The place was lovely and clean and spacious. We would have happily booked again but the price for next year is far, far too high for this sort of property given the noise, that there is no outdoor space and the amount you will pay for parking - almost £800 for a week and not even in the school holidays!! Over £200 more than what we have just paid for exactly the same week!!!! So we will not be booking for next year and will find somewhere else in the Whitby area. Quite frankly that kind of hiking up of prices just sends customers elsewhere so it's pretty pointless, I'm very disappointed to see prices hiked up like that, this is a nice place but not a luxury property that commands that kind of money at all. Lost customer!!!!

Had to park to unload and then find a permit parking space, however we dropped lucky on both occasions we needed a space. Shame there isn't a dishwasher, kitchen is big enough for one. Only other thing to mention is that someone close by the cottage has a cockerel which starts crowing around 4am!
