(The village also has a bus service on a route from Helmsley to Scarborough). We joined English Heiritage and visited Pickering Castle, Whitby Abbey, Mount Grace Priory, Rivaullx Abbey and Helmsley Castle. Had a short trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and a day at the beach in Scarborough. The week flew by

Only one fault the double bed was very uncomfortable and caused myself and my wife a lot of distress with back pain.

Thank you for the feedback. We try very hard to prepare the cottage and are delighted that you appreciated this. We are really sorry that you found the mattress uncomfortable. Mattress comfort is tricky to get right as some people prefer a harder mattress and others a softer one. We replace mattresses on a regular basis and will definitely take your comments on board when we next replace this one. Property Owner

The cottage itself is 'a proper cottage', clearly with its own historical interest and presented in a manner which is a credit to its thoughtful owners. Well done!

  • "Lovely little cottage in a nice village, we went with our young kids so were looking for a good base to reach various beaches and attractions and it certainly delivered."

There's a play park about two minutes walk round the corner and the coast is just over half an hour away. The courtyard was lovely to sit in in the sun and play games. We all had a great holiday, thanks so much for our stay!

Just one thing I found it difficult to locate the cottage, I feel even though the name plate is very nice, from a car it’s difficult to see the name as I passed it three times before I found the cottage, Overall I found the cottage very pleasant and would recommend it to my family and friends.

The owners were friendly and approachable too. Tea, biscuits and fruit available on arrival which was a nice touch. An old building but with all mod cons. Small kitchen/living area but cosy and enough space for the 3 of us. Lovely quiet village location. Would recommend.

  • "A brilliant place to unwind and relax with long evenings in by the woodburner."

A wonderful place to feel the history of the area and be close to the people who lived there. The old wrelton range in the kitchen was a treasure ( we found something similar at Fairfax house in york) The steam trains and ancient landscapes, Roman footprint and railway history across the whole north York moors national park was amazing. We loved the Local Catholic church in Pickering which was so welcoming and we felt awed by the local saint Fr Nicholas postgate who was martyred for his ministry to the local people and lived and worked in pickering as a gardener for many years

  • "We arrived a little earlier than planned but was made to feel welcome the moment we met the cottage owners."

The cottage itself is stunning and kept immaculate, we was greeted with a pot of tea ready to be made and biscuits - my kind of welcome! My daughters were kept amused in the evenings with a collection of dvds and board games provided, they also enjoyed having their own little ensuite. We was always comfortable during our stay, the cottage was kept warm in the evenings but I recommend bringing slippers or thick socks due to the stone floor downstairs. Building wise, it's on 3 levels and it took some getting used to with the steep stairs and little people. No proper shower but a hand held one which for us never caused an issue. We had a washing machine in the cottage and a clothes airer which, with kids, came in handy! We was a short walk from a pub which served beautiful food and the best gin collection I had seen! A half hour or so drive to Scarborough, Whitby, York etc and we was out and about doing something somewhere every day. We would love to book again sometime in the future, a beautiful cottage, friendly owners and the location is ideal.

  • "We'd never heard of Wrelton but this village was a great holiday base."

20 miles from Whitby, York and Scarborough. Directions to the cottage were extremely accurate although you need to be careful on the road going in as it's a bit blind and some of the locals drive too fast. Cottage was lovely and we were provided with more than we expected, and had had in previous cottages we'd booked. Only saw the owners when arriving and leaving, but they were next door if we needed them which we didn't. There is a Lidl Supermarket on the main road in Pickering so an easy stop on the way back from a day out.

  • "It may be impossible given the nature of the premises but if there was a way of getting a shower installed somewhere in the cottage it would make a comfort difference."

I have only given a tentative score re recommending Sykes due to the insurance issue. We are still looking into this and I foolishly did not ask the owners if they had insurance to cover accidental damage caused by the renters.
