  • "After a long drive arrived to a very cold cottage (-4 outside) owner had not bothered to put the heating on for our arrival and when we did the boiler was not working."

Electric heater warmed the lounge, bedroom was like a fridge and no hot water until late afternoon the next day. (The very helpful man from Sykes fed back the pressure in the boiler was down) Not the best start to our week at Primrose cottage. Spotlessly clean cottage, beach walks literally on your doorstep. Well equipped kitchen with everything you needed. Great Wi-Fi and lovely books to peruse about the area and wildlife. Very inclement weather saw puddles of water come through the door of the cottages and windows towards the end of the holiday.

  • "I have stayed here three times, and the first two the standard and cleanliness were excellent."

This time they were not. This has been addressed efficiently by the agents and the owner, and a refund has been accepted in settlement.

  • "We had a very enjoyable week at Primrose Cottage."

It is warm, comfortable, quiet & extremely well-equipped. The location is wonderful especially for anyone with a dog as the beautiful beach is a five minute walk or you can take the bridle path opposite the cottage & walk to Craster. As other reviews had suggested that the cottage was looking “tired” we didn’t know what to expect, but it would appear that all the issues raised had been dealt with. Other visitors have commented that a shower would be an asset. However, as we only have showers at home, the bath was a treat after a long walk! Would definitely book this cottage again.

  • "The location of the cottage is perfect - I have stayed there three times now and have booked again for next year."

However, the cottage is looking tired. I agree with previous reviews that the boiler needs replacing and a shower would be welcome, but realise that these are expensive items for the owner to install. However there are a number of much cheaper improvements that could be made that would make the cottage more comfortable and feel less neglected: - some of the grouting in around the bath and washbasin is black with mould - the lighting is poor, making reading on dark days and evenings very difficult. Replacing the dark light shades for paler ones would help. - the lining of the lounge curtains has rotted in places - presumably due to the sun. The hem of one set of bedroom curtains has come down and unsightly safety pins have been used to attempt a repair. - the cutlery is very old and needs replacing. - place mats and coasters are extremely worn. - the cover on the Northumbrian Cottages folder has come off, which adds to the general feeling of neglect. Dealing with these small details would make the cottage feel much fresher. If it wasn't for the superb location I wouldn't keep returning.

  • "Wonderful location and cottage and very good value in comparison to similar properties."

New pillows essential. New mattress ideal. A shower would add a lot to the comfort of the stay. Boiler a bit tricky! However overall great stay

  • "A nice cottage in a superb location."

Ideal for two and the dog. A shower instead of the bath would be so much better. An update of cutlery and crockery would be nice. Having said that, we had a wonderful week at Dunstan Steads, as always!

Plenty to see and do and with the beach just down the lane. We were able to walk many miles while calling into one or two very friendly pubs for a snack and drink. Great place for birds and photography. Will book again as one of the best dog friendly cottages we have stayed at.

About the location

CRASTER

Alnwick 7 miles; Embleton 3 miles.

A picturesque village that seems to tumble into the sea, Craster was an important fishing harbour in the 17th century and is still famous for its oak cured kippers which have graced the best breakfast tables for more than 150 years. The village offers a pub serving food, a fish restaurant and Robson's famous fish shop. There is also an excellent children's playground. Nearby are some of Northumberland's finest sandy beaches. Just south of Craster is Howick Hall, which was built in 1782 and has associations with the Grey family, including Earl Grey the great social reformer and tea enthusiast. The gardens at Howick Hall are open to the public during the spring and summer and are especially worth a visit during the rhododendron season. A walk along the coastal footpath to the north of Craster brings you to the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle - the largest ruined castle in Northumberland.
