  • "The photographs are not a true representation because there is no hilltop view due to garden trees being so overgrown."

There is no starter pack for the log burner which the owners blame on Sykes for incorrect marketing. The heating is knackered. The place is dirty and uncared for. The owner’s attitude towards paying guests is less than appalling. It’s a shame for Sykes because their accommodation that I have previously booked has been wonderful. The cottages is being neglected and needs serious maintenance undertaken. I have lots of photographs as evidence of the disrepair and lack of care and cleanliness.

The house is called Hilltop as it is on a hilltop in the village, not because there are hilltop views, except in the far distance from the main bedroom over the top of the trees. We inherited the name of the cottage. It's a shame that you found fault with the cottage. You are right we are due some maintenance, unfortunately it's not been possible to book this in until October. I tried to help as much as I could at a distance with your issues with the heating both on the phone and by text message - which when checked since appears to be working as expected. I'm sorry that you felt my attitude was incorrect or uncaring. I would appreciate seeing the photos you took that showed a lack of cleanliness, as I have previously checked on the cleaner's work and not found it lacking. Perhaps you could forward them using What'sApp to the phone number you already have for me? Property Owner

The bathroom let's this property down poor tiles and shower didn't work think wfi is needed there to I know it said when booking there's no wfi but for price of staying there really poor that wfi not supplied

Thanks for your feedback. We are having the bathroom tiles and shower fitting replaced in the autumn - unfortunately the damage was caused by a previous guest this summer and we didn't want to cancel existing bookings as everything still functions. We have not previously had a report of the shower not working - my cleaner tested it on Friday and found it to be working - so I am not sure what the problem was that you experienced. It is made very clear that there is no wifi available at the property. Many of our guests enjoy the offline time. This is a rural property with no phone line connected and no cable currently in the village. There is good mobile reception and a hotspot can easily be set up using your own data. Property Owner

  • "The windows and frames were dirty, dead flies and spiders."

Bathroom tiles loose and shower falling apart. Porch, dining area was dirty. Garden overgrown, no patio furniture to sit out on as described in listing. Bench in garden had thorns growing over it. With these issues rectified it would be lovely. Kitchen well equipped and beds comfortable. A thorough deep clean is needed and garden tidied.

It's a shame the cottage was not as clean as you expected - my cleaner will see these comments, and I will ask her to address your concerns. We are due to have the bathroom refitted this autumn - unfortunately a previous guest this summer caused some damage to the tiles and fittings - we are aware, but save cancelling holidays we have not had any time to address this yet. There is patio furniture (two different sized tables and chairs) in the shed in the garden. Someone must have moved the bench as it used to be sited well away from the rose. The garden is regularly tended - but this has been a prodigious growing year, and I fear our gardener may not be keeping up - thanks for the feedback which I can pass to him. Property Owner

  • "Comfort not perfect."

Steep stairs. Everything else super. Facilities excellent but strange, garden overgrown, steep and dark. Well thought out throughout. Only met one neighbour. Area very quiet.

Kitchen well equipped. Parking for one small car. Very peaceful.

  • "A warm, comfortable, cottage that the owners have fully equipped with great care."

Because of new pavement building the drive isn't accessible now for large cars but there is a safe car park opposite. This, however, involves walking up a short, steep hill which may be awkward for some. The secure garden is lovely and a haven for birds which entertained us as we ate and read in the sun room. We found Wark an ideal position for exploring the area, within easy distance to coast, towns and moorland. We will return!
