  • "Very comfortable and well appointed property in a beautiful part of the world."

Could be difficult to find in the dark but the owner's directions were easy to follow although it would help if the length of the drive up the farm track was also mentioned. Would definitely recommend and return.

  • "A fabulous cottage set in an idyllic location close to Bakewell, Chatsworth and the Peak District."

A very well maintained cottage with a homely feel. The kitchen is well equipped and is laid out to make cooking a social activity. The welcome pack of goodies was appreciated. The track to the property was not an issue, even in a small car like my mini. We wish we had booked to stay for longer!

  • "We felt the property was a little cluttered with furniture restricting space."

Well provided for but needed oven gloves. We would have liked to have been warned about the difficulty gaining access to the property due to the unforeseen weather conditions. Lovely to have been left some basic provisions a very nice touch.

It was unfortunate that you arrived during storm Babet and our normal access was flooded by the River Bradford breaking its banks. We are a little puzzled by your comment on being not warned about gaining access as we informed you of the alternative access through our neighbours drive which they kindly allowed us during your stay. We are sorry you found our property a little cluttered but we like to make if feel like a home for when people stay, as can be seen in the pictures on the web site. It is difficult to cater to everyones tastes such as a more minimalist interior. Property Owner

The only slight anxiety for some in our group was the access road, which is a track with a lot of potholes and a slightly eroded place next to the river. Plenty of room to drive through for a CSV but a larger van might struggle owing to the rock escarpment next to the erosion. Also, a low car would need to go slowly. Townies used to tarmac!

The little extras that the owners left for us when we arrived were lovely and started our stay off ideally. The owner met us (lives next door) and was very friendly and helpful with general info - comms prior to arrival were great also. The property itself is finished to a high standard. There is plenty of crockery, cutlery and glassware and a large fridge and large freezer. The oven and hob are OK - a bit slow maybe. Maybe too much furniture in some rooms. Nice private patio behind the property with an amazing view. Silence ! Probably the only thing we would wish improved is to have more than 1 shower - we were 7 people. Plenty of hot water for lots of people though. Thanks for a great stay in a your lovely home - great location to explore the Peaks.

The views from the back of the cottage are absolutely stunning. We were lucky with the weather so managed to enjoy many meals outside in the back garden against a spectacular landscape of rolling hills, green fields, trees and grazing cows. The cottage is very well equipped (perhaps with a touch too much furniture) and there is even a hairdryer provided in every room. The somewhat small exterior belies the bright and spacious interior. The owners, Tony and Belinda live next door and left us some goodies including milk, eggs and a bottle of wine. The only relative downside is the long and very narrow access road to the cottage. We very much enjoyed our stay and the cottage is in a great location for visiting neighbouring attractions in the Peak District. Thank you to Tony and Belinda.

Comfy beds, decent linen, hot water galore and nice towels. Small basics but all good. The property is well stocked with local info, books and music to enjoy. Great TV and a well functioning kitchen with all the kit you would need. There is a small outside space which we would have made more of with sunnier weather. This overlooks some fab views across the valley below. Access is via a private track through two gates. The instructions do make this clear and when you first arrive it can feel an unusual way to arrive at a property. However, it also made it feel really secure and private and we loved that. The setting is rural and you are very close to farms and we enjoyed the farm animals in nearby fields and the wildlife in the area - in particular the birds of prey hunting in the valley and the geese from the local lake. Load of great walks you can do direct from the property and easy access into Youlgreave for pubs/food and basic shops. And only a short drive to Bakewell and Chatsworth. We were a group of six - two couples and two single friends and it was perfect for us for our annual catch up.

Slight negatives were that the access to the cottage via the track is downplayed in the description and the condition of the first part of the track next to the river was a bit of a shock as it feels like you’re driving along a country path, we got used to it though and it became part of the adventure! The buzz from the hot tub next door was a bit irritating and the tub should be better screened off from the barn. Didn’t spoil our holiday and we had a great time

  • "The details of this property do not accurately identify the fact that the access track which is about 3/4 mile long has many deep pot holes which could damage the suspension or wheels of a car."

Thank you for your comments though we were surprised to read them. The property listing does state that the access to the property is via a single track road, this road is maintained by the council and has been attended to recently. On the day of your arrival there had been significant rainfall and so there was a little standing water apparent though this should have posed you no problems. Thank you once again for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. Property Owner

  • "The location is superb down a track surrounded by beautiful rural scenes, wildlife and a farm."

Locals are trying to get post code changed as it will lead arrivals astray using sat navs. It HAS to be approached from the centre of Youlgreave. Spacious property well presented and clean. Very well equipped kitchen but no spare cupboard space for food. Easy to get round that though with boxes and bags. Lovely paved patio and furniture with great views. No photos of that which nearly made me not book. Outside space important in summer. Only negative of the whole week was the buzzing of next doors hot tub. Comfy bedding and we parked 5 cars easily. Three decent pubs in Youlgreave which is about a 15 minute walk uphill. We ate in The Bulls Head- to varied reviews. Good beers in both Bulls Head and George. The other pub seemed to have fewer opening hours? There’s a small Spar shop, a cake shop and further - near the Bulls Head - a gem of a bakery called Peak Feast which has outside seating. It serves coffee, cakes and has a hot snack menu. Highly recommend the Homity Pie. We walked to Druids Inn in Birchover and to the Lathkil Hotel in Over Haddon. Both well worth a visit for food, drink and views. Both high up so you’ll earn the calories! The local walking routes from the doorstep are superb, best we’ve done, varied terrain. We would love to rebook. Helpful owner near by.

The bedrooms are large and comfy, we used the cot and high chair available on request, both of which were very clean and a perfect fit for our toddler. The kitchen had everything we needed, plus a huge fridge and freezer which had plenty of room for a weeks worth of food. Fresh eggs, milk and a bottle of wine were left for us when we arrived which was a nice bonus. The owners were so friendly and hospitable, I would highly recommend this property and we will certainly be going back. I read a review that said that the country road might be hard for city folk to travel down, but coming from London we found the property easily and the road was no problem. Nothing negative to say from our point of view at all. 10 out of 10 :)

All the bedrooms are done to a high standard and the beds were so comfy we all slept really well. The cottage is well situated for a lot of the local attractions and many walks can be done from there. Despite it feeling pleasantly remote you are only a 15-20 minute walk into Youlgreave were there are 3 pubs, we ate in 2 and both served very good food. Not for The Cow Barn! Beautiful, cosy, spacious with luxurious furnishings. The bed linen, towels, sofas, all the very highest quality; making the six of us (seven with tiny baby) feel pampered for our pre-xmas family holiday. Loads of room; two more could have stayed and we still wouldn't have felt cramped. The cottage was all trimmed up for xmas, again in a tasteful and traditional way; even leaning us xmas crackers, little boxes of chocolate treats and a brimming advent calendar. They also left us a bottle of wine, chocolates and biscuits, milk and eggs to get us started. The owners were next door, which is always useful in case you need anything. Communication was great before and during the stay. Couldn't have asked for anything better. Thanks very much

The cottage and environs were excellent except that the dishwasher did not work from the start and we were catering for ourselves. This naturally meant lots of washing up - hardly a good holiday experience. When the owner was contacted we were told it had been showing problems but when faced with us just as we were leaving said it was not their fault and a new one had been ordered. I indicated I expected some recompense as I had paid for a dishwasher in the rental. I am told by Sykes the owner refuses any recompense and Sykes cannot do anything about this ! Disgraceful !

Thank you for your feedback. The owner was unaware of any issue with the dishwasher until the Saturday when the cleaner attended to find the dishwasher had been taken apart by one of your party. At this point you advised you would be happy to wash up by hand. Unfortunately electrical items can fail from time to time and the owner has since replaced the dishwasher. We are sorry that you feel we haven't assisted satisfactorily with this matter. Property Owner

Cow Barn is well placed for walks in this part of the Peaks and we all enjoyed our stay. The house is well equipped throughout, is warm, cosy and there was plenty of hot water. There was a generous welcome pack, However there were a few niggles that could easily be addressed. Cupboard space is too limited for 8 people - odd given the number of locked cupboards. The kitchen is very well equipped but again although there is a large fridge freezer there is very little other storage space for groceries. The bathrooms would have benefitted from heated towel rails that worked and although the bath was perfect for the children, an extra shower would have been useful for the adults. There are 3 pubs in Youlgreave - however one currently serves no food and the other two are disappointing.

Thank you for staying at The Cow Barn and providing lovely feedback. The are locked cupboards as this houses the extra linen and equipment for the cleaning team. The heated towel rails in the bathrooms do work, after investigation it looks like they may have accidentally been turned off by guests. Property Owner

Beautifully finished and in a fabulous location. The single track road does have pot holes but we have a low car and did not find it a problem - you just need to proceed with caution. No passing traffic is a real bonus and the short walk into the village delightful. However. We were 8 people for a whole week and it was a little snug. The small dining table and lack of storage space for food not requiring refrigeration were both a challenge - and both could be readily fixed. There is also very limited clothing storage space despite the property having lots built in - it's all locked! The upstairs bathroom is also let down by the lack of a shower, particularly given that it is plenty big enough to have one added. Again, 8 of us using the one downstairs shower for a whole week was a little frustrating. 8 people for just a couple of nights or fewer for a week would be perfect.

A couple of things to point out, the property is covered by CCTV with active camera's covering the garden but the signs were at the front of the barn next door so it was not immediately obvious it was active so for me it felt intrusive. The other thing was fly's inside the property particularly the kitchen and living area were an irritant all food had to be covered at all times and my step father was unable to rest in the armchair. Having said that neither of these issues affected the wonderful holiday we had and we will visit again in the future. **** Owner response; Thank you for spending some time to provide your feedback and we are happy you have had a wonderful holiday. The CCTV only operates at the entrance to the property and also covers the areas where guests park their cars. Their only use is security for the property and the guests visiting. We are sorry you had to deal with flies at the property, we will do everything we can to prevent this being an issue moving forward. Unfortunately being rural and close to farms, along with the hot weather this summer has meant a higher than normal amount of flies in the local area.

The beautiful outlook would be very difficult to rival. The kingside bed is very comfortable but too creaky. Thank you to the owners - you should be proud of your restoration and furbishment
