The hot water was dangerously to hot shower was only used 1 the next 2 times we went to use it went to perfect to burning hot to ice cold with 2 people staying with limited mobility couldn't use the shower small bedroom felt damp and came away with a sore throat we've stayed in other cottages but unfortunately won't be returning to this one

Thank you for your feedback, Sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your stay. The water is set to the standard household temperature & regularly checked by our plumber. As for the shower, I’m only sorry that you didn’t tell us there was a problem so that we could rectify it, as we don’t live on the premise we can only rely on being told of any issues/problems, hence why we leave our contact details incase you need to get hold of us. Generous welcome box provided in the spacious family kitchen on arrival. A small garden at the front of the cottage provides a shady place to sit and there is a larger, dog friendly, garden along a small lane. Great location in the village of Grosmont providing a base for exploring the North York moors and places such as Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Pickering. Whitby is easily accessible by road or by train from the station at Grosmont and there are lots of local walks to explore. A steam train service also operates as part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Highly recommended.

On arrival we were greeted with a welcome pack which included wine, biscuits, and cake which was a lovely gesture. The cottage was very clean throughout and had all the amenities we needed. The log burner in the living room was not used by ourselves as it was warm during our stay but I've no doubt it would be lovely when needed. There is a small private garden to the side of the property should you need it but we didn't use it. Parking is at the front of the property, if like us you have 2 cars to park then it can be a little tight to get them both in but we soon found a way to get both car on easily. All in all we had no complaints about out stay in Wychwood and would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone. Thank you to the owners for a lovely stay.

  • "Not as clean as I would have expected - dirty mugs so really felt like we had to wash all the crockery to start off with, thankfully there is a dishwasher."

Beds Clean and cottage tidy. Welcome pack pretty poor a basket wish crisps and a few bits then another basket with half a dozen tea bags and a few pencil sachets of coffee and sugar thankfully we arrived in time to go to the shop for supplies had we arrived late this would have not seen us through to the morning which is the least we would expect. Jam for sale ? Very poor, I think if they had spent an extra £10.00 on these types of things it would make a huge great difference and given we were paying over £800 for 4 nights for 4 adults I think they could have supplied a little better on logs / tea / coffee/ milk. The other thing that urks is a long list of what we have to do on exit...strips all the beds and put linen in bags - make sure the dishwasher has finished it cycle by check out time of 10am - its all a bit much - sadly wont be re-visiting

Breaking the habit here by responding to this, I was most offended to hear of your disappointment of my complimentary welcome pack. Personally I find that a bottle of wine, a whole local fruit cake, a bag of crisps, a selection of biscuits, an additional extra of Easter eggs to mark the occasion, a pot of teabags, a handful of coffee sachets, coffee pods for the machine, milk, sugar & dog biscuits to be a most generous start to your self catering holiday. The wood burner includes a starter pack of fuel as stated in the listing, we are unable to provide an endless supply of any amenities, as this is a self catering cottage. As for the suggestions on departure, Sykes recommend that the property should be left as closely as possible to how you found it and encourage us to be clear with the tasks that need to be completed. To be honest I found it strange that you didn’t feel the need to wash up and to leave it for someone else! Property Owner

They had also trimmed it up for Christmas which was lovely and very welcoming. The box of goodies was lovely with biscuits, cake and wine what more could you ask for. The weather was very bad when we got there and we had to shovel our way up the little entrance way to the row of cottages so I would suggest that anyone going in wintertime to take a shovel and sand. We could not get out for 2 days but I think that is unusual at this time of year. I think it caught us all out. We did get out to go down into the village and see the Santa steam train which was great. Overall a nice holiday. I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks to the owners. The only thing to nit pick was the shower going hot and cold, but as explained this is due to the water pressure in the area. • "We absolutely loved Wychwood cottage!"

It’s was like getting a big hug of a cosy country cottage. We arrived a little early as wanted to see trains. It’s less than 5 mins walk to Grosmont Station, Perfect. We had a Tesco delivery grocery slot booked for 4pm. All arrived exactly as planned. We used the co-op to ‘top up’. Station cafe filled the gaps on snacks for baked potatoes, sandwiches and cakes! The pub was closed until Thursday night…so take something with you, or book a slot, or pre-order at the co-op We even had Interflora deliver massive bouquet of flowers. Ok - the house….I love a kitchen diner, it had everything you need. The king size bed is downstairs and if you need a pee in the night, you have to go upstairs, just leave a light on up there! We didn’t use the other 2 bedrooms so cannot comment. The king size bed is very comfortable. It got abit cold in the room late at night, so I took my robe and wore that too. Good mattress, great bedding and good quality towels. Need to get some new pillows, as they were abit worn and flat. Again, since covid, I travel with my own. I love a long soak in the bath, lashings of hot water. Husband had showers, it was a pain, ran abit hot and cold, but he got there in the end. We knew there was a woodburner, so we took our own firelights, matches and some logs, just initial supply provided. Furniture is a leather sofa, comfy for two, an upright wingback and a cuddly comfy big chair. The car is parked on private drive down a country lane. It’s fine for my big estate car, access no problems. The enclosed Garden is off set opposite across the quiet back lane, literally just across from front door. There are chickens next door, so keep an eye on ‘Rover’ and sheep and ducks near by. If you want a 20 mins drive, you will be in Whitby. Big supermarkets, best fish and chips, the abbey etc. If you want walks, they’re on your doorstep. If you want steam trains…wow! You’re in the right place. If you want TMC (the model train shop) I know, I know, but it’s 10 mins away in Beck Hole. Robin Hoods Bay is not too far either. I mean it’s the holiday that keeps on giving! We stopped at Harrogate on the way up. Shopping! It was 90 mins away. We usually stay in seaside cottages, this is our first country cottage, but chosen really because of Grosmont station. Well worth a chat to all volunteers. We visited their engine sheds, the signal box and sat on most of the foot plates. thank you for letting out your cottage. We really loved our 4 nights there. Booking for next year for a week.

  • "We had a lovely week at Wychwood - the beds are very comfortable, the kitchen is very well equipped, and the owners were very quick to resolve a small electrical issue we had."

Our main reason for booking Wychwood was the secure garden, which I assumed could be accessed directly from the house. This is not the case...and whilst it does mention in the listing I didn't pick up on it which is my fault, however it was disappointing and wanted to highlight it for other guests. The other disappointment was the Station Tavern ...the only pub in the village. If we had checked reviews on TripAdvisor we would have been aware of how inhospitable the owner is. We arrived at 7.35pm on the Friday evening, after a six hour drive, and asked for a menu to be told he stopped serving food at 7.30pm. The only shop in the village closes at 5.30pm...so not a great start to our trip. On our second and last visit to the pub on the Sunday we witnessed 4 young walkers being told they couldn't get food as they hadn't booked. Obviously this is no reflection on the owners of Wychwood but again worth noting for future guests...be prepared and take dinner for the first night at the very least.

I don't usually respond to feedback, as I find it unnecessary , but on this occasion I would like to clarify some points. The electrical issue was only due to the guests overloading the circuit by plugging in speakers and tripping the power. The garden is indeed a secure garden, accessed by a small communal path through a gateway, which only takes seconds/steps to walk to, this is as described on the listing. As for the pub in the village, i cant answer for their opening times and whether or not they are fully booked, but there are four other pubs in the next village along, and others in the neighbouring villages, so a good choice of places to eat. The local shop is only a local Co-Operative store, and in rural areas 5.30pm closing is very good, but there is a Spar within a 10 minute drive away which is open later, for those in need, or the supermarkets are only in Whitby. As stated in the review, these things are out of my control. Property Owner

There was a couple of minor problems which were the radiator in room was not hot and just warm. There was a leak in the small bedroom which got worse over the week due to the weather so my son was a bit fed up as it was cold and damp. Additionally we would expect there to be sufficient crockery and cutlery for a full day of meals. This was not the case and required washing-up or excessive use of dishwasher. Car parking was as advertised, but we feel it should be highlighted that large cars will struggle to access the parking space and whatever size of car will need to reverse for some distance ( maybe up to 100m) down a narrow back lane. Other than these points, we were very happy with the accommodation and the property was very comfortable.

Bathroom door wouldn't shut or lock the new owners sent someone round quickly sort it out, he was able to make it shut but sadly we found it still didn't lock! All it needed was a small piece of wood! The bed in the 3rd bedroom was used by an adult of no heavy weight. The slats collapsed when he sat on the bed causing there mattress to fall through, this happened a couple of times it looks like the bits holding the slats are inadequate, plus any slight movement it just creaked and groaned! As experienced renters of holiday cottages my son says "this was the worst bed he's ever had "and he couldn't sleep that well at all. The main bedroom is a long way from the bathroom, if the new owners could put in a downstairs toilet it would greatly improve the facilities. I believe this has also been suggested by others. Instructions for the washer/dryer would be helpful.

The property was clean but needed airing and the bathroom was a little tired in places. The carpets appeared to be brand new and the bedrooms were very clean. The master bedroom is on the ground floor so a bit of a trek to the bathroom. It was lacking blackout curtains which was a major issue for us sleeping when it became light in the morning. The owners should look at rectifying this, along with adding a full size mirror in the room. I would suggest swapping the master and the twin bedrooms round if possible as the rooms were similar sized as it would be a lot nicer upstairs with better views and the bathroom next door if you were a lone couple stopping. The twin bedroom was lacking a wardrobe as was the single so hanging space was limited. The garden was fantastic, a great little sun trap and had sun all the way to the sunset. There was a table and chairs with an umbrella to relax on. We had an issue with a faulty cold water tap leaving no water in the kitchen and a broken gate, both were rectified within a day so very impressed. Parking was very tight however it was possible to fit our two big cars there with a bit of manoeuvring. The property was extremely well stocked with equipment and I would think you would have everything you needed in the kitchen to make some of the biggest of meals. Overall a great stay and we would recommend Wychwood. Great location for the railway and exploring the North Yorkshire moors and coast.

One of our favourite places to eat was Steam in the Geal galley but sadly the owners of steam have moved in to Robin Hoods bay, however the old school house tea rooms are now doing pizza three nights a week and it’s delicious, the witching post pub in nearby Egton is a lovely place for for food and drink and they are shortly opening a tea rooms too. Fish and chips from sleights were as good as ever . About the location

GROSMONT

Whitby 5 miles.

The pretty village of Grosmont sits at the junction of the River Esk and Murk Esk in the midst of striking North Yorkshire Moors scenery. The area is characterised by its narrow roads, steep hills and scenic views over valleys of patchwork fields and wide-open expanses of moorland. Grosmont itself lies in the ‘Heartbeat Country’ and is famous for being the home of the North York Moors Steam Railway. The Railway has been preserved and run by enthusiasts since 1973 and today carries upwards of 300,000 passengers a year. The village has a general store, post office, book shop, art gallery, cafes and a pub. It makes a great base for exploring the many pretty farming villages along the Esk Valley and the wider North York Moors National Park, as well as the North Yorkshire Coastline with characterful harbour towns and villages.
