Cumbria is the second largest of the English counties after
Yorkshire, and to many, it is synonymous with that sparkling jewel
in the nation's crown - the Lake
District . The stunning Lake District National Park is
indeed part of Cumbria, but this region is blessed with not one,
but parts of two of the nation's most stunning National Parks;
a small area of the Yorkshire
Dales National Park also falls within Cumbria, as do
the mountains of the North Pennines and the Howgill fells. Made up
of parts of what was once North Yorkshire and North Lancashire, as
well as Cumberland and Westmorland, Cumbria extends as far north as
Hadrian's
Wall in the Scottish
Borders, encompasses the lush beauty of the river Eden
and the Eden
Valley in the east and counts the lovely seaside
resort of St. Bees and the fishing ports of Whitehaven and
Workington among its county towns. Idyllic Cumbria cottages can be
found in all corners of the region, offering so much more choice
than 'just' Lake District holiday cottages.
Of course, Lakeland cottages are justifiably popular. With a wealth
of natural beauty, including pristine lakes and high mountain

those seeking the very best of both worlds. Here, mountains and sea
collide, with four stunning valleys linking coast and countryside.
Wasdale is a place of superlatives, unrivalled scenery and, in
brooding Wastwater, its deepest lake, and Scafell Pike, its highest
mountain. Enjoy Ravenglass on the
coast; visit Muncaster Castle and Gardens or the Roman Bath, or
take the Ravenglass Steam Railway into the heart of the Lakes, to
the quaint hamlets of Eskdale, Boot and Dalegarth. Visit roaring
Stanley Ghyll Force, or take a dizzying drive over the Hardknott
