  • "My husband and I had a very lovely stay at Meader Barn with our 2 small dogs."

The barn was very comfortable, spacious and had all amenities. Yes the approach to the barn is narrow and a bit rough in places but as long as you take your time it’s okay. We were able to walk straight onto Dartmoor and see the magnificent views around. Ellen, the owner, was very pleasant and friendly who made sure we were okay with everything. We certainly enjoyed our stay very much and so we will certainly be returning for another break in the not too distant future.

The only thing we could possibly comment on is the steps in to the downstairs bedroom and bathroom could be highlighted in some way to make them more visible at night. The country lanes to access the property are very narrow but fine if you take it slowly.

Thank you so much for staying with us and we are really glad you enjoyed your stay! Unfortunately the roads leading to the farm do not belong to the us and so maintenance of them is not done by us. We have of course reported the issues you raise several times and are waiting for remedy but it’s a long wait like in many rural places at the moment. In the meantime we state it very clearly on our description so that guests can make an informed choice about booking. Property Owner

  • "Lovely location and clean, spacious property."

Teething problems were quickly resolved. Although we'd read about the narrow lane full of potholes leading to the farm, we thought this was probably an exaggeration and would be fine in our 4WD. The lane is really bad though and by the last few days of our holiday we were desperate not to drive up or down it any more! A few of the worst potholes could be easily filled to make this better.

Thanks so much for your review and for staying with us! We appreciate the issues with the lane and the rural road system in general. Our farm is in a very old and wild part of Dartmoor, so by its nature is not easily accessed. We don’t own the roads leading in - they are county maintained tarmaced roads - so we are not able to fill the potholes. We are continually seeking resolution to this as you can imagine, and in the meantime we mention it in our property description as a courtesy to those who may find it difficult. Property Owner

  • "A very nice property in a lovely quiet location."

The view from.the lounge/garden is stunning. Positives - the cottage had everything we needed and was very comfortable and welcoming. There are lots of lovely walks and interesting places close by. Tavistock is a gem of a town and very welcoming and dog friendly. Negatives - the garden is not dog proof so be prepared to use a lead unless your dog has perfect recall. Ours are pretty good but it was still a concern. The WiFi is awful. We counldnt use most of the time but mobile signal is OK. As advised the access isn't suitable.for some vehicles. It is a long single track drive which is rough in places but OK if you approach with caution. No worse than some of the roads!

Thanks so much for your review and for staying with us! We are sorry that you had issues with the WiFi. Our WiFi service is super fast fibre to the house and the guests who checked in today reported the network issue that you were obviously experiencing, which we have now fixed. Unfortunately we are on a different network in the farmhouse so we aren’t aware of any issues unless notified - we would, of course have been very happy to resolve it for you. We find that the fencing in the garden is sufficient for most dogs but some will find a way out if they’re so inclined, which is why we describe it as enclosed but not secure and advise that they aren’t left alone in the garden. Beds comfy, didn’t sleep too well mainly due to torrential rain and wind pelting the cottage but then that would have been the same at home. Managed to see so much in a short space of time - Lyford Gorge, St. Michael’s Church on Brentor, Foggintor Quarry, Great Mis Tor, all within 15/20 min drive.

It was spotlessly clean and well thought out. We loved the location which was very rural and this was exactly what we like. The nearness of the moor was wonderful which could be accessed from the farm gates. But the convenience of the easy journey to Tavistock for supplies and lovely canal/river walks was great. So many lovely dog walks in this area. The owners next door were very kind and attentive and worked hard to make us welcome and comfortable. • "The Owners were welcoming and friendly."

We did have a few issues which did get sorted although the oven took a week. The beds were comfortable and the barn was warm, the settees left a lot to be desired. The woodburner popped on top outside when lit even when the damper was closed definitely needs servicing. Worst thing is the road it is more potholes than road I can't see the council doing anything with this being a no through road when there are so many other roads needing attention, maybe they can try and do something themselves, there are no passing places and on meeting a land rover and trailer I had to reverse quarter of a mile until he could pass. It did stop us going back lunch time to go back out in afternoon as one bone shaker a day was quite sufficient.

Hi Helen - Thanks for your review. We tried our very best to help you have an enjoyable time during your stay and we are sorry that you found it didn’t meet your expectations. We had the oven repaired as soon as we possibly could once you’d reported the fault; unfortunately the week leading up to Christmas is a difficult time to get an engineer to fix an appliance. The property also has a full convection microwave that we showed you how to use during the wait and we didn’t charge for your extra wood loads as a goodwill gesture. Our wood burner is fully up to date with servicing as you can see from our safety certificates, however, we will ask the company to double check the issues you have raised. We agree that the road surface is poor - as are many others in rural Devon and particularly on the approach to very secluded properties like ours - which is why we state this very clearly on the property description. Im afraid we can’t resurface or alter the width of public roads ourselves. Property Owner

Great location with easy access to walks from the door or just a short drive to stunning walks like Burrator reservoir or Bellever Tor/Forest all the more glorious with the autumn colours. Night sky is incredibly with low light pollution. Excellent food at the Peter Tavy Inn but it is a two mile, not one mile, up hill walk home. Perfect for walking off your meal but some may prefer to drive down and back.

The photos don’t do the accommodation justice, it was beautiful. When we opened the door we were wowed. The one thing I was upset about being away from home for Christmas was not having a Christmas tree, but to my surprise there had a beautiful tree set up in the living room which was beyond perfect. It was homely, spacious, cosy, with stunning views. Lovely local walks to take the dog. Only thing I will say is don’t underestimate the narrow roads around the area and road leading to the cottage, it’s bumpy, dark and quite a squeeze with a large 4x4 but it just made the journey even more exciting. Loved the 3 local rural pictures has you enter the front door and would have loved to have seen similar types on all the empty, vacant picture hangers throughout the property. Enjoyed great views but being a retired Gardener would have liked the huge fuschia bush to be cut down to stone wall level to access the wonder scenery from the bench table while having a coffee or glass of wine. Facilities were excellent but the oven shelving racks could do with a deep clean and a few of the oven trays replacing. All in all had a great time there.

  • "The weather was wet and windy - but the cottage was warm, dry and welcoming."

We particularly loved the "bar" area. It was great to sit there for morning coffees, games or meals and we all now want a bar like that at home in our kitchen! Luxurious bathrooms (2 showers plus a big bath tub meant there were no queues even after a long wet walk!), comfortable beds, the big wood burner in the spacious living room and the well equipped kitchen made our autumn stay extremely enjoyable and the mezzanine bedroom made the cottage stand out from the rest. There is no dishwasher, but that was fine for us as we managed to get our pre-teens involved in the kitchen chores! And yes, the last part of the road up to the farm is tricky when there is oncoming traffic, but that is a small price to pay for the fantastic, secluded location in the middle of the moor where we met lots of ponies and sheep but very few people during our walks. Our springer spaniel enjoyed the freedom of the enclosed garden and never escaped... and we were very happy to have found such a special place with such friendly and helpful hosts to escape to before the next lockdown! ,

WhiteTor Farm is a wonderful place to stay situated on a hill off the beaten track, steeped in history with lots of animals within and on the outskirts. The accommodation was perfect for us with comfy beds, lots of hot water, light and airy. The owners were delightful, leaving us some organic milk, eggs from the farm and some homemade chocolate cookies. Our two small dogs had a good time too and settled quickly. The location was perfect for visiting the local area during the day - we went to Tavistock, Okehampton, Plymouth, Saltash over the Tamar and of course we ventured deep into the moors where we saw an abundance of cows, sheep and beautiful ponies and visited three delightful villages. Make sure that you take some provisions with you for day/night one as it is a 1.5hr round trip walking into Peter Tavy where there isn't a local store but there is a pub with great food. A perfect getaway treat for great relaxation.

It is situated in a quiet and remote location which we loved. Saying that Peter Tavy was a good walk away, in parts by the river. Tavistock has all the amenities you could wish for and just a short drive away. The lodge was clean and tidy, adequately equipped. The pub at Peter Tavy is a must! The cottage is worth every bump in the road. We couldn't have been more relaxed and our cocker spaniels also felt at home. The views are stunning and change with the weather. You can see the storms come in across the Moor. Worth a stay any time of year. Will be booking again for next year. Only one thing would be a dishwasher. Being on a septic tank this would also reduce water usage! This by no means takes anything away from the cottage. 5 stars any day, I'd give 10 if I could.

This was very well received as the journey had been fairly difficult with the amount of traffic and heavy rain all the way. One of our party, elderly, and having a stroke some years ago, collapsed during the morning in the downstairs bathroom. I ran to the property owner, and used his phone for a 999 call for an ambulance, the owner of the property was able to explain exactly how to get to the house, as it was difficult up a long rough lane. He then stayed with the patient talking trying to wake him, taking pulses and listening to breathing. He was superb staying almost 1.5 hrs until ambulance staff arrived taking over. Thankfully our friend was fine again by the afternoon, Mr and Mrs Thomas were friendly, and helpful, allowing us to take our two dogs into a field with less mud after the heavy rain. They adjusted the central heating almost immediately after asking for assistance with this. The property is very nice, beds very comfortable. Good book selection, and paperwork on local amenities. Yes we would consider a summer visit, to be in superb countryside and wonderful views, where our grandsons could help feed the resident pigs, horses and chickens. We know the area well, so for us no difficulty in driving up to the property, We also came home with home killed pork and beef which was on sale from the owners. Yes a very good property, with kindly owners where nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Carole Duckett,
