  • "Fantastic property in a great location!"

Well equipped kitchen, we cooked each evening and the kitchen had all the tools we needed. Large freezer was really handy as we brought frozen food and were able to freeze our bread rolls so they would last the week. The beds were so comfortable and the curtains kept the light out well. Couldn’t fault the property at all. We will be back!

Thank you very much for your kind review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Rock Lea. We are delighted to hear that you found the cottage to be well equipped and comfortable. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Property Owner

  • "Didn't see any description that it was a shared garden and thought the picture of the garden a bit miss leading, but didn't affect our stay but may others if they are expecting a private garden!"

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review. The description for Rock Lea clearly states (twice) that, although the patio area is private, the garden itself is shared - 'There are also stunning views over Loughrigg from the.... shared garden area at the rear'/'Small private patio with seating........... and access to a pretty shared garden'. The garden has a communal bench/seating area (as shown in the pictures) and is shared with 5 other cottages; however there is ample room as all neighbouring properties also have private patio areas away from the garden. We do hope that you enjoyed your stay at Rock Lea and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

No negatives at all. We benefitted from decent weather and were able to leave the car most days. That meant having dedicated parking was a real bonus too. The living room is cosy, the kitchen meets all basic needs, the bedrooms comfortable, and the bathroom has as good shower. It was an ideal property for our stay in Ambleside.

  • "Lovely cottage in a quiet part of Ambleside."

A perfect place to base yourself in for a holiday in the Lakes. There are plenty of walks from the front door door, but if you need to go further afield I would recommend the excellent bus service. Having a parking space was a real bonus, but be warned, a larger car would be too big to fit in. All in all, a lovely cottage.

Many thanks for your feedback, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Rock Lea and the excellent local walks. As you mention, the cottage is in one of the quietest and oldest parts of Ambleside, but this means that on-street parking is restricted. Rock Lea is very lucky to have its own dedicated parking space and our description highlights the fact that this is for one small-medium sized car only. Guests with larger cars/4x4s and off-road vehicles would struggle to fit in the space provided and may obstruct access to parking for neighbouring cottages. Thank you again for your comments and we look forward to welcoming you back to Rock Lea. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful cottage, cosy, comfortable and equipped with everything you could want."

Close to centre of Ambleside, a really beautiful place to stay. Unfortunately there was quite alot of noise throughout two nights of our seven night stay. A van alarm from the garage along the lane repeatedly going off at 2.15am! Another night we were awoken by 8 visitors arriving at youth hostel centre (?) across the yard reversing with beepers up lane in minibus at 1.30am and lots of noise/lights outside. Having said that it's a quiet area without passing road noise, and we were able to park outside the cottage in a designated place. The hostel building (?) across the yard did seem to have frequent, short stay guests arriving throughout the days and nights. We weren't aware that this facility was opposite the cottage when we booked. Well equipped kitchen, however, the microwave was difficult to use as the duration of cooking time was tricky to set. The dvd player remote control didn't work, the battery wasn't one that was in the spares left at the property.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay, finding the cottage to be cosy, and well equipped. We are sorry to read of the issues that you experienced with noise. We hope to welcome you again. The Heart of the Lakes Owner Relations Team From the Owners: We are very sorry that you were disturbed at night during your stay. The Drill Hall opposite Rock Lea is a very small traditional slate hut and used for outward bound overnight stays of short duration (1-2 nights), with numbers restricted. We are pleased that the cottage is still well maintained and looked after. You used to supply a basket of logs for visitors convenience. You supplied toiletries for our use. They were ok, but I always bring my own, so they are not that necessary. We love the position of the cottage, the beautiful, peaceful garden and the plus of having our own parking space. Parking is okay as you have your own space but it is so busy up there as house next door is being renovated and work vans park anywhere they can. Cottage needs a good clean as cobwebs everywhere and hairs all over the carpets. Lack of clothing hanging space when there for 2 weeks and not much space to keep food.

The property

This traditional slate cottage, built in 1903, rests at the end of a row of six cottages in a quiet conservation area of Ambleside, known as The Green.

Rock Lea has been sympathetically resorted by its owners to a quality standard, retaining much of its original character and offering a heart-warming escape for families or a couple looking to stay in a peaceful location close to the amenities of Ambleside.

Enter the cottage into the entrance porch with room to store coats and boots before finding the sitting room, a cosy space to unwind into the sofas with the added benefit of a woodburning stove for those winter evenings.

Moving through into the fitted kitchen, appointed with white units and a useful selection of appliances including an electric oven and hob, here the chef amongst you can prepare a hearty breakfast or sumptuous feast to be enjoyed at the dining table, or head outside to enjoy your meal with views of the sun setting over Loughrigg Fell.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, dressed in light colours with oak furniture, along with a contemporary shower room with walk-in shower.

Walking enthusiasts will want to take advantage of the many low and high level walks from the doorstep including the lower paths to Rydal and Grasmere and the higher peaks of Wansfell and the Fairfield Horseshoe, or walk alongside the River Rothay and up on to Loughrigg, a rewarding climb to discover the uninterrupted views across Lake Windermere.

Although a small town, Ambleside has become a major honeypot location for tourists with a wealth of independent shops, restaurants, pubs and landmarks, including the 17th century Bridge Houser over Stock Ghyll beck which is one of the most photographed scenes in the Lakeland.

A cruise on board a Windermere steamer is highly recommended, taking you down to the bustling town of Bowness-on-Windermere where you’ll find the Lakes Aquarium in Lakeside before looping back round to Ambleside with some unbeatable views of wooded landscapes, secluded bays and dramatic fells.

Rock Lea is a charming base for Lake District delights, all year round.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
