Lovely quiet location with fantastic views of the Cairngorms. Very comfortable and excellently equipped. Loved to see the trains go by and they were not intrusive at all. It was fascinating seeing the Caledonian Sleeper stop outside of our window each evening! Very handy for catching trains with no hassle. We went to Stirling for the day and Aviemore for the day by train as it was so easy to do!. The owners were lovely people, very helpful and informative about the best places to go and the best ways to get around. The chocolate cake left ready for us by Isla was wonderful and a very nice welcoming touch. We will definitely go there again!

Not only for the project itself but for the people that stay there. Everything has been thought of to the finest detail. As a person with background in working signal boxes. This place is pretty authentic so that anyone looking from the station might think it is a real signal box! I love the fact that all the private rooms such as bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor where the signalling equipment and locking would be and the top floor where the working frame would be is open plan with a stunning view of the surrounding area! Wonderful gem!

The addition of the car charging point was a very welcome surprise and made life so much easier. The property was perfect in every way. The location is beautiful and well served by main roads nearby and the trains. Particularly enjoyed a visit to a local whisky distillery and travelling on lots of old and new trains. The sounds of trains going past was magical and we even kept up on the lives of the sheep in the opposite field. The owner of the property popped by to check on us during our stay so we knew we were being well looked after.

  • "I'd thoroughly recommend the Signal Box as a great place to stay; wonderful views; loved the trains passing by (and we're not rail buffs!"

). Signal Box is well laid out, scrupulously clean, a good base for surrounding walks/train trips. More than that, it feels as though it's cared for - this might be because Isla and her husband stay themselves occasionally - something I'd recommend to every owner - so there's nothing "missing"! One slight issue - the wonderful chocolate fudge cake provided for our arrival was way too big for two (but we finished it anyway)!

We stayed at the Signal Box in June 2022. Great communication with the owners, who were super helpful suggesting places to visit and local things to see. The Signal Box has views across fields, watching the sheep, birds and cattle was quite mesmerising! On arrival we found chocolate fudge cake, yum! milk and flowers, thank you so much for these - very much appreciated. Well appointed kitchen, lovely living area with aforementioned views, parking, what's not to like? Didn't sample the sauna, far too many other things to do! Thanks Phil and Adele

Whatever you come to the Cairngorms for the location is perfect with plenty of walking right from the front door and so much to do and see. If you just want to relax then the ability to curl up in front of the log burner and take in the view and unwind letting your day be governed by the train timetable then there is nowhere better. Incredibly clean, well presented, quirky and equipped for everything! On arrival was a (slightly addictive...) chocolate cake, milk and everything there to get the wood burner going... and the view!!!! My god, the view.... We watched the sun creep over the mountains every day in awe of the scenery. In recommendation we tried the Glen Hotel for food which was okay, but after reading the reviews we expected better food/service and were a bit disappointed. The Braeriach Hotel on the high street on the other hand was a riot!! If you want to be welcomed into the community with open arms and enjoy great company and a few drinks whilst listening to the regulars blast out Sinatra on the karaoke (Friday night) this is the place for you! One of the best nights out for a long time ending in hugs and "come back to see us again." Truly felt welcomed and left with a warm fuzzy glow.... (could also account that to the whisky....) If you want to laugh continuously for a few hours, pay them a visit. The Scottish highlands has so much to see and do and the Signal Box is central to it all. Our first visit and I doubt it will be our last. Thank you Isla for a wonderful stay.

The signal box had everything we needed, it was well stocked and so lovely a place. We were treated to a lovely homemade chocolate cake on arrival and milk in the fridge, which hubby loved as I'm vegan so he enjoyed the lot over the week we stayed! It was so peaceful a stay, there are plenty of books to read on all sorts of subjects if you get bored at all, I only managed one but fancied reading a lot more! There is a train that passes every now and then but it didn't disturb us, we just got very into watching for the different trains. Its in a great location also, close to many different walks and nearby towns and places of interest, we also really appreciated the sauna after some Munro climbing! It is also pretty close, about 10-15 minute walk away from a few shops, restaurants and pubs of which I found a few were vegan friendly luckily as I was thinking I would be cooking all own food which there definitely is the facilities to do this.We really hope to visit again in the future!

  • "The Signal Box is in a beautiful location and is very stylish and well equipped."

The sauna is a luxurious addition and very relaxing after a long day walking across the hills. We had a lovely chocolate cake, flowers and pint of milk awaiting our arrival which was delightful. Isla, the owner, called round on Tuesday to make sure everything was OK, which was very helpful. There are two things we would like to mention: First, the mattress was very, very firm. It would appear that the mattress, being sprung, is not suitable for a slatted wooden base and should normally be on a divan base, making it more comfortable. The duvet was only just wide enough and felt meagre. A king size duvet on a double mattress is always cosier! Secondly, there was no DVD player despite it being mentioned in the details. It didn't matter that much but perhaps should be removed from the description.

Thank you for your feedback, we are happy to hear you had a nice stay and enjoyed the welcome gift. We are sorry to hear you were unhappy with the duvet cover, this has now been changed to a king-size duvet. In relation to the mattress this is down to personal opinion however, we will monitor the feedback on the mattress. The property now has a smart TV so the DVD player has been removed, the description has now been updated. Thanks again and we hope to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

The property

Something a bit special!

This quirky detached wooden property, built in 2004 in the form of a signal box, is adjacent to the station in the Badenoch & Strathspey village of Newtonmore and was featured in The Times' list of '50 best cottages, beach houses and rural retreats' in January 2013.

To make the most of the panoramic views towards the River Spey and Cairngorm Mountains, the accommodation is upside down, with a spacious, open plan living area on the first floor, while on the ground floor are a double bedroom and bathroom with sauna.

Decorated to a high standard, this charming property is in an ideal location to explore the village and take advantage of the walking in the area.

The cottage is 150 metres from a link into the Wildcat Trail - a 7km orbital walk and path network.

The other attractions of the Cairngorms National Park are also within easy reach - an excellent base at any time of year!
