"We fully concur with the last review given by Sarah (Jul 2024)."
Had we known her findings, we probably would have gone elsewhere.
Photos #1&2 of the cottage are misleading and should be replaced. They give the impression that this is the garden, matching the description: has ‘garden / patio’ and ‘Side courtyard with patio, gravelled area and furniture’. All a good choice for dog owners, but this is in fact incorrect.
During the day, the small patio next to the double doors was our only private area. The low wall and gate surrounding the patio have been improved with the addition of a taller gate and wooden fence possibly following a previous visitor comment for dog security and privacy. Everywhere else was the café garden and the patio outside the main entrance was a main thoroughfare for staff and customers to access the garden.
It would be truer to say that the cottage was sited within the café garden, with no other access available to reach the cottage/parking space. The black gate shown could not be used. We had occasional customer noise on the warmer days, and closed the kitchen and sitting room curtains when necessary for privacy.
The cottage was clean and well equipped. The café staff where extremely accommodating and pleasant, particularly when they served our lunch on our patio, when their tables were full!

"The cottage is very quaint set in a lovely village."
On arrival we learned that the cottage was literally next to the cafe, and the garden area was busy with school children and parents. Extremely difficult to get your dogs and luggage through. We didn't have great weather but had it been sunny the noise from the cafe area would have concerned me during the day. The cafe did serve a really lovely breakfast. The garden area was extremely small, especially for three dogs. We did however find some nice walks.

"A lovely quaint cottage in a friendly neighbourhood."
It was clean and welcoming. I didn’t find the low beams a problem but my husband had to be reminded to ‘watch your head’ a few times! Apart from that we loved it and would happily stay there again. It was lovely to come back to after a day exploring the area. We loved having a great cafe next door for breakfast when we wanted - with friendly staff and the local pubs for some enjoyable evening meals. The surrounding area provides much to see and do and we ran out of time to explore all we wanted.
We would highly recommend Buttercross Cottage.

"We found the cottage clean and well equipped and the welcome pack was much appreciated, the attached cafe was lovely and the food was very tasty."
The village itself was nice and the old church opposite was wonderful, peaceful and tranquil. The local pubs were welcoming with great food and drink after days out exploring. The only slight downside which is not a complaint but we found the shower cubicle was quite small and the beams and sloping ceiling in the main bedroom very low so we regularly banged our heads, especially if going to the loo in the night, again I stress that this is in no way a complaint just a comment, and we still had a lovely time.

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Buttercross Cottage over Christmas."
Hazel provided a warm welcome, and the cottage itself was very cosy. The kitchen is huge and very well-equipped and, although the sitting room is small, it was comfortable and had a 'smart' TV - and with access via French-doors to some private outside space which we would certainly have enjoyed in better weather. Because of all the recent rain some of the local walks were muddy and slippery, but it's a lovely area, and the village is very friendly with some nice pubs, a small general store, and Antlers tea-room. The only minor issue is the bathroom being off one of the bedrooms. To be honest, for a family it really isn't a problem - we just negotiated times! And there is a cloakroom downstairs anyway. The shower cubicle is small, so our only constructive suggestion might be to forego the large bath, and install a larger shower. But overall it is simply a delightful place and I'm sure we will be back.

Very dog friendly. There is a small courtyard where you can let them out and if there is no one in the cafe’s outside area (which is enclosed ) they can have a mooch in there.

One of the cleanest and tidiest cottages we’ve stayed at through Sykes. Great base to visit Lichfield,Burton-on-Trent Tamworth and Uttoxeter. With lots of lovely walks in the area. Would recommend both the Antler cafe and The Crown for food. The only downside to the cottage I would say that if 4 people are staying in the cottage there realistically is only 1 bathroom(other listed bathroom is a downstairs toilet) which is accessed through the main bathroom….but everything else was perfect.

The cottage is quirky, well-equipped, and very conveniently located for dog walks and village amenities. For 2 adults and 2 dogs there was plenty of space but might have been a bit tight with 4 adults, which was the plan when we booked; also the bathroom being en-suite to one of the bedrooms would have been a bit inconvenient. We liked the location, the surroundings, the cafe on the the doorstep, the local pubs, the beer, the friendliness of the people in the pubs. On the downside. we did not have sufficient time to visit all the amazing amenities that the area has to offer. Shugborough is awesome ! Lichfield is quirky but the village of Abbots Cross has to be one of the most relaxing places we've ever encountered. When you find a gem, you don't want to share it. Country lane walking is for us, we love it, but we had to go home. We have stayed at several Sykes Cottages and this is the only place we wished we could stay for longer. Oh ! - Bliss ! Very comfortable and clean throughout. The welcome basket was a lovely treat too! Lots of choices to eat out in the village should you prefer not to cook in. Lovely friendly community in Abbots Bromley with good walks close to property. We had given the property a score of 8 but would have been a 10! The only reason being, if there are four adults staying … the main bathroom leads off the double room which made it a little awkward for those sleeping in the twin. However there was a toilet downstairs which became very useful. Nice little courtyard & cafe adjacent to the cottage. Was very quiet during our stay so no noise levels but may change a little if weather was warmer. The cottage had a small fenced off area outside with table and chairs but too cold for us to use this time. Would highly recommend and look forward to returning soon!

Thank you for your review. I am sorry you felt the cottage fell short of your expectations. When I greeted you on check in I did reiterate should you have any queries or problems to let me know regardless of time or day A previous guest did mention about the upstairs toilet not flushing well so we had someone come out and repair it and when I flushed it after the repair visit it worked well. I cannot find any issues with the shower it works perfectly well and there is a shower head also attached to the bath. The floors were hoovered and mopped prior to your arrival plus the carpets had been professionally cleaned 2 weeks prior. I try to check all crockery/ pans etc after each stay and I did not spot any offending items. The neighbouring cafe place their bins on the outside of the courtyards alongside the parking area. Your vehicle was a large transporter van so larger than most visiting cars so depending on how you parked you may have been closer to the bins than mort visitors. I could not smell anything from the fridge. I could smell dogs after your departure throughout the house as you had 3 big dogs all over the property whilst the weather conditions outside were very wet & muddy . Perhaps that is the smell you are referring too? If you had contacted myself directly as I said I would have been more than happy to come and resolve any queries.

"Lovely, cosy cottage, beautifully decorated, and generally very comfortable."
The owner was there to greet and show us around on arrival, which was a nice personal touch, along with the welcome basket.
The little courtyard outside the living room felt secluded and private, though the December weather didn’t lend itself to sitting outside! It was perfect for my two dogs, surrounded by high fences and a gate with a bolt separating it from the main courtyard of the next door Antlers Coffee Shop. I saw a previous reviewer mention that the security of the private patio had been insufficient for their dogs, but this has been addressed fully and it’s now completely safe, even for my Houdini of a terrier! The main courtyard is currently undergoing refurbishment and looks like it will be lovely when complete. The owner apologised for the “building site” but it was no bother at all.
The kitchen is large, clean, and extremely well-equipped, with a lovely range cooker, plenty of fridge/freezer space, and a washing machine, which would be great to have on a longer break. We did find one wok that someone had evidently stuffed back in the cupboard under other items without washing it, but it was clear that a lot of thought had gone into the kitchen and ensuring that guests have everything they could possibly need, and then some.
The living room is snug and homely, with two comfy sofas. There is a downstairs loo which was very clean and nicely decorated.
Upstairs, the two bedrooms are beautifully decorated, and the bed in the main room is huge and comfortable, and again there were thoughtful touches like the individual toiletries and bottles of mineral water, which gave the place the feel of a boutique hotel. The en-suite bathroom is very nice, with a good shower along with a deep bath. There is clearly a knack to flushing the loo, which took some time to figure out.
The only thing the photos don’t make clear is quite how low the ceilings are upstairs, particularly the cross beam in the main bedroom. At 5’11” and 6’4”, this made late night trips to the bathroom a bit of a perilous quest! It didn’t hamper our enjoyment at all but is something to consider when booking, as is the fact that the bathroom is at the far end of the main bedroom, so anyone staying in the second bedroom would have to go right through the main room to get to it.
Overall, this is a great little cottage in an excellent location, that I would not hesitate to recommend. Also recommended is Antlers Cafe, which will deliver an excellent full English breakfast straight to the kitchen table! Thank you very much, Hazel and family, for a wonderful weekend break.
Thank you for the feedback. Tricky Loo handle fixed and Wok has been replaced by one that fits in the dishwasher

"Buttercross Cottage is very comfortable, with everything provided for a self-catering stay."
The owner welcomed me personally when I arrived. She had made up a welcome basket. The supersized bed in the main bedroom would sleep a family! The bedding and towels were very good quality, as were the pillows. It's a lovely area for walkers and local walks are in the welcome book. Unfortunately the small courtyard is not suitable for dogs - my dogs are less than 12 inches tall and could jump the small wall, straight into a cafe grounds and then under the gate into the road. It was stressful for the many walkers and cyclists who use the cafe garden and for me. Such a pity because I would have loved to visit the area again.
Thank you for your feedback. We have now erected a fence which prevents even the most athletic dogs jumping over the wall.

Further afield, there are some wonderful places to explore and we particularly enjoyed Lichfield. We were made to feel very welcome and the key handovers were easy and well managed. "Firstly, this is a lovely cottage which is well equipped with everything you need."
The bed is huge and very comfortable which was welcome after our long walks.
Upon arrival we found out that the outside area is for the customers of the coffee shop next door and the area for us was a tiny courtyard within that, so offered no privacy at all. If that doesn't bother you then it wouldn't be an issue but it bothered us and totally confused our dogs. People came through our tiny outside area to access the coffee shop and other customers helped themselves to the outside furniture which should have been for our use. The weather was good so we'd been looking forward to sitting outside with our dogs after our walks but they kept barking at the coffee shop customers which was frustrating for everyone.
The cottage really needs a deep clean. I had to wash pans before using them, the cooker had oil splatters all over it, the sinks were dirty with a layer of dust on top of the dirt which clearly showed they hadn't been cleaned prior to our visit! Work surfaces were sticky, the fridge was dirty, shower screen dirty, floor dirty - it really wasn't what we're used to or expected.
We were woken up at 7.30am daily by the staff starting work in the coffee shop. We actually left 2 days early because we'd had enough and after paying hundreds for the week felt we'd been deprived of the relaxing break we'd been looking forward to. It's a shame because it has the potential to be a lovely place to stay if it was clean and the owner was transparent about the set up with the coffee shop and lack of privacy.
We will definitely not be going back again.
Thank you for your review, Buttercross Cottage is a lovely well equipped cottage and we are proud of what we have achieved since purchasing the property in January 2022. We opened our doors to Sykes guests in April 2022 and have had nearly back to back bookings since with guests leaving lovely reviews in our guest book and on Sykes website.
I am sorry you felt the cottage fell short of your expectations and would like to address the points raised.
I try to greet all our guests personally when I can and this was the case with yourselves. On meeting you I showed you the entrance to the property which is accessed via the Coffee House courtyard. I explained that the coffee house courtyard was only used between 9 am and 4pm and that out of these hours you were more than welcome to make use of the extra space on top of the outdoor area associated with Buttercross Cottage.
I was on site the day the member of the public accidently used the side gate associated with the Buttercross. He was very apologetic towards yourselves and myself. I always ensure the gate is always locked from the Buttercross side.
I was not made aware by yourselves that the Buttercross furniture has been used by the coffee house as its has its own furniture in its own courtyard and it is clearly separated by the wall and fence.
I clean the cottage myself and have done from the start. All the equipment is brand new so it is easy to spot any that has been put away dirty. I disinfect and clean everywhere even if the previous guests have left it immaculate which the majority do.
The coffee house is run by a family member. On check in I did reiterate should you have any queries or problems or indeed wish to order a takeaway delivered to the cottage they would be more than happy to help good or bad.
I am sorry you felt the need to leave early without contacting myself or Sykes to let us know or discuss any concerns as I am sure they could have been rectified immediately.
