  • "What an absolute delight it was to stay in the Shepherdess Cottage."

The decor and furnishings were tasteful, well thought out, beautiful and comfortable. From the luxurious towels to the bath robes. The cottage was spotless and in a great position for ambling around the village. A big thank you to Meg for giving us the run down before we arrived. Plus the bags, dog treats and refreshments when we arrived. Would definitely recommend

  • "What an amazing cottage, Meg certainly has all bases covered!"

Excellent location, extremely comfortable and very dog friendly. A fantastic base for local exploration with some great dog friendly restaurants nearby. We visited with my parents and the layout of the cottage gave us our separate personal spaces as well as great living and kitchen areas. And the hot-tub was an amazing treat at the end of the day adventuring (or at the start of the day before getting started). Highly recommend

  • "We loved our stay at the Sheperdess Cottage!"

! The property is stunning, and has everything you need. There is nothing they havent thought of!! The bed was so comfortable, just what we needed after long walks with the dogs. A great location, walking distance to shops, pubs and restaurants. Very dog friendly, we would definitely stay here again!!

  • "Well appointed cottage in a great location."

Generally a good stay, but some of the decor and furnishings could do with a refresh/maintenance, as they are showing signs of wear and tear. Also, a bit more attention to the cleaning as there were plenty of cobwebs and dust on lamps/artificial plants etc. There is no mirror at all in the downstairs bedroom which was impractical. The owner wasn't particularly responsive to messages to get code for key safe or answer a few queries before arrival. They were actually in the property after the 4pm check-in time. Beds are very comfortable so we were well rested and the hot tub is very clean as someone comes midweek and again at the end of the stay to check it and clean it. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants within walking distance of the cottage and several are dog friendly.

  • "Had a lovely week at the cottage."

It was exactly as described and photographed. Moffat was a lovely town, Spice India takeaway was delicious, however a korma was very spicy and the Moffat Chippy was the best for fish and chips. Behind the cottage towards the entrance of the campsite there is woodfired pizzas on a Friday and Saturday which were delicious, 4 pizzas were only £30. Lots of nice walks in the area and owners were on hand for info. More cutlery is needed especially when dishwashers was on.

My dad had a fall and the owner was very supportive and understanding, we really appreciate that. We look forward to retuning to the cottage at some point

  • "What a beautiful cottage!"

It had everything we wanted. Lots of useful kitchen equipment, a lovely hot tub, comfortable beds, top end decor, secure garden for the dog and a covered patio for when it rained. It also had a gas BBQ which we didn’t use because of the weather. There’s TVs in every room with a fabulous sound system and the WiFi is reliable. The cottage is so close to several pubs, cafes and restaurants that we barely used the kitchen! The ground floor bedroom and shower room would be great for less mobile guests, also. The surrounding countryside is wonderful and there are numerous little towns and villages within an easy drive to explore. We only wish we’d had more time there. Thanks to Meg for your information, extra little treats and your warm welcome!

  • "An absolutely outstanding property which definitely will not disappoint."

It has everything that you could possibly wish for and so much more. It is luxurious but this is combined with such a homely feel. The location is fantastic with all shops and cafes within walking distance to the cottage. We had 2 dogs with us and the enclosed back garden was safe to let them both roam about in. The surrounding area has fantastic walks with lots of woods and water to splash about in. On return from walking the hot tub was such a welcome luxury and we enjoyed it every day. Meg the owner is fantastic and made us feel so welcome. She could not have done more to make our stay enjoyable. My only gripe is that we were only there for 4 nights which definitely wasn’t long enough. We will definitely return to this wee gem of a cottage xx

It was in a great location within minutes of good shops, restaurants and hotels. The cottage was very well equipped and very clean. The owner Meg done everything she could to ensure we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Any queries or concerns we had Meg delt with them promptly and courteously. The hot tub was great and secluded. All in all we had a lovely stay and Moffat is a very friendly place. We would definitely return, thank you Meg for all you done for us.

  • "Just returned from a week at the cottage ."

The cottage is furnished and decorated to a high standard, the owners have certainly gone the extra mile to provide the wow factor. Upon arrival it was spotless clean and very welcoming. The cottage has everything that you could possibly need the owners have listened to the previous guests requests and provided requested items ie mirror and hairdryer. The outside courtyard was great for our 2 dogs fully enclosed so no worries with let them out. Hot tub was great especially after a day of walking. Meg the owner was on hand to answer questions we had on the first day. The cottage is located on a busy road but we had no issues with sleeping during the night. We were able to park right outside the cottage all week except Saturday when we had gone out in the car and returned to find the park spaces full but we found a spot across the road. Location is great Black Bull pub right on the doorstep we had food there a couple of times was really good. Lots of other places for food and drink in the village. Overall a great cottage and would definitely return if we go back to Moffat

  • "We had a nice stay here overall but we did leave a day early."

. The owner left our children Easter eggs and decorated the room with bunting as it was Easter.. Which was really kind. The house is decorated and equipped to a very high standard with everything you need. The area is nice with plenty of pubs but you need to be aware of the opening times for food. Whilst we was there not much was open on the days that we went out. We couldn’t go out much because of the weather being so bad. The Indian takeaway is very very expensive and isn’t nice food, the Chinese takeaway is cheap and isn’t nice food, but that’s our own preference. If you fancy a takeaway make sure you know the opening and closing times as we wanted a pizza around 9pm and the pizza/kebab shop had already closed. The chippy was nice and the pubs also serve nice home cooked meals. The sweet shop is also worth a visit. As someone else stated in their review there is nowhere to sit whilst using a mirror, no plugs near a mirror either. The road outside is very busy which wouldn’t bother some people but this disrupted sleep every night for us. We don’t own a dog and we did see that the holiday home accepted well behaved dogs. Unfortunately we could smell dogs especially in the living area from the cushions and rug. I’m sure this wouldn’t bother everyone but for us as we don’t own a dog the smell just lingered but this will happen when dogs are allowed in the property. Also dog hairs were on the downstairs bed were someone has let their dog sleep in the bed which we personally think shouldn’t be allowed as people who don’t own dogs don’t want to sleep in a bed with dog hairs. The upstairs bathroom was really hot like a sauna and we couldn’t figure out how to turn off the two radiators so we kept the door closed all the time due to the heat being unbearable. The hot tub was lovely, our children enjoyed going in every day and it’s a good size! We did however have maintenance messaging us early morning regarding the hot tub to come and clean it etc… We have stayed at many holiday homes and this work is usually done without disturbing the guests. Then on another occasion they wanted to come round and put up a curtain pole which we think should have been sorted before or after us leaving the property. We decided to pack our things Thursday night and leave a day early as we felt uncomfortable and unsettled.

Thank you for your feedback we appreciate guests opinions. I am so pleased that you liked the Easter eggs and decorations I like to make my guests feel special and welcome There is now a full length mirror in the master suite and a hairdryer is supplied. Moffat is a bustling town with lots of amenities on your doorstep. I am surprised by the dog comment as I did offer to put the cleaner back in to do a freshen up after you messaged me but you said there was no need everything was spot on. Dogs are not allowed on beds or furniture as a requirement of sykes and all bedding is high quality, hygienically laundered and freshly changed and the whole house cleaned throughly each changeover so I find it hard to understand there would be any dog hairs on beds and when I prepared the cottage for yourselves it was immaculate and smelt fresh! The upstairs bathroom was really hot as you were running the heating between 28 and 32 degrees this would overheat the house very quickly as been a cottage it is very cosy and extremely well insulated so therefore not needing such high temperatures on the thermostat the cottage runs comfortably between 19 and 21 again I am surprised you didn’t contact me or Sykes about this as this could have been very easily resolved. The hot tub is maintained throughout your stay to achieve cleanliness and hygienic standards to maximise your enjoyment of the outdoor facilities we try to minimise disturbance to the guests during their stay. I am sorry that you felt you wanted to leave a day earlier but again I wish you would have contacted me or Sykes about this so we could have helped with any issues you felt I always strive and go out of my way to keep my guests happy at all times and I am always available for any questions or issues they may have. Thank you Property Owner

  • "Had a lovely week's stay in the cottage."

The house is decorated to a high standard, it is larger than it appears in the photos and the winding staircase gives it so much character. Thank you for the shortbread on arrival they went down a treat. The sofa in the living room was so comfortable, it was difficult to get up after. The hot tub is very large, and could easily fit up to six people in it. The town of Moffat, while small has lots to do, it has plenty of cafes and pubs. There is an outlet shop 5 minutes away from the cottage with a lovely cafe, but be warned you can buy some stuff cheaper in other shops in the town. The toffee shop is also worth a visit to try some Irn Bru fudge. Some things to note about the cottage, it is located on a main road, so could be quite noisy with HGV's passing in the night. Parking is located on the street, but we never had an issue parking outside the cottage. A dressing table would be useful in the house as there was nowhere to do my hair and makeup and a hairdryer would also be useful. A guest book would be appreciated as I enjoy reading other people's recommendations of places to visit. In the information booklet it says you can connect your phone to the TV speakers in the room, however, when we attempted this the TV froze. When we contacted the owner asking how to resolve this, we were told not to connect our phone to the TV, so this needs amending in the information book as it is misleading. After leaving the property we were contacted by Sykes to say we would need to pay an extra fee for additional cleaning to the hot tub. This was surprising as we were present as the hot tub was refilled, and there didn't seem to be an issue. After 5 days we received another message from Sykes to say the matter had been closed with no information provided. This caused unnecessary stress and put a negative end to an otherwise enjoyable holiday.

About the location

MOFFAT

Dumfries 21 miles

Nestling in the Annandale valley, Moffat developed in the 17th century from a village to a spa town where the sulphurous waters of the Moffat Well were held to have the power to heal and this led to an influx of visitors throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the buildings in the town date from this period and the present Town Hall was originally developed as a Bath House. The original well can still be visited and is a 1.5 mile walk from the town into the surrounding countryside. In addition to its renown as a spa town, Moffat also grew in stature due to the wool trade and also its position as a stopping point on journeys between England and Scotland. Today the town is popular with tourists and not just because of the superb scenery affording many opportunities for great walking, cycling and fishing. Situated 50 miles from Glasgow and Edinburgh, Moffat is the ideal base for travelling to events in the cities. It has a range of attractions including the Moffat Museum, theatres, art galleries and a selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Treat yourself to some famous Moffat Toffee and don’t miss the annual Moffat Gala in July and not forgetting the renowned Moffat Sheep Races in August!
