  • "Lovely property in a rural quiet location."

We found a few issues, mainly the smell of dog in 2 of the 3 bedrooms. We ended up moving the rugs out of those rooms into the utility, and that improved things, but the wardrobe (and our clothes) slightly smelt of dog all week. (We are not dog owners, so can probably smell it easier). The property was generally very clean when we arrived, but the wooden floors were quite dirty, we spilt some tap water in the kitchen on the first day and when we cleaned it up with kitchen roll, the kitchen roll was brown! Small issue with the oven, it might be that one of the heating elements has failed, as after 30 minutes it still wasn’t up to temperature properly (180-200). It did cook, it just took ages, probably only getting to about 150-160. A water filter jug was provided, with a sign that said ‘please use filter jug for all drinking water’. The reason for this was not clear, and turned into a bit of a faff all week waiting for enough filtered water to boil a kettle, fill multiple water bottles for a day out, make kids drinks etc. The Double bed in the 2nd bedroom was also quite uncomfortable, but I appreciate this may be personal preference! A sign in the property about the hot water would also be useful, it takes several minutes to get hot, and on the day we arrived we gave up trying to use the showers late evening before bed as we hadn’t fathomed out yet that you needed to let the hot water run for a good few minutes before trying to use it.

As previous reviews stated kitchen is very well equipped and all plates and glasses etc were clean. Beds were very comfortable. The place was very clean. We were only here three nights over New Year so didn’t use garden etc but all looked great and will definitely look to return in the future. There were 4 adults and 2 children in our party and the space was perfect for us. And the cottage was lovely and warm without really needing to use the fire. The only thing I would point out is there aren’t any particularly sharp kitchen knives which made cooking New Years dinner interesting. I am only saying this as if I was reading a review before I went somewhere I’d find this helpful as I would bring my own :) Thank you

We found the road up to the cottage on what seemed worse repair to last year, although last year the potholes may have been masked by ice. The owner did not give us any warning. Some of the potholes were significant and a couple are marked with stocks on the verge. After a few trips we got to know how to drive the road to avoid the worst holes but it would have been good to have had some pre-warning. Apart from that the stay was great and as good as our few days last December.

Local attractions were virtually on the door step. The accommodation provided everything that you could possibly need for a weeks holiday. The beds were a bit hard, but each to their own, they done the job. As we had a dog, we did close the gate to ensure that he did not go through it, as vehicles go past regularly. But others did come through the gate and leave it open all the time, something to be aware of if you have a dog or young children. The only other problem was there were a lot of fly’s getting in the cottage. Even in October. There was a fly zapper which was very welcome but, perhaps a fly screen would be beneficial? Over all a lovely cottage and a great holiday.

Great central base for exploring the North East. Cottage was very clean and comfortable, especially the beds. Lots of room Too. The kitchen was well equipped and we appreciated the welcome gifts etc. Thankyou. The garden was lovely although it as too cold to sit outside. The log burner kept us very cosy in the evening but there were no firefighters. No dishwasher tablets either. There was also a very strong odour on entry, and in all rooms. I’ve no idea what the Aroma could be but wasn’t overly pleasant. We got use to it but always smelled it when entering the cottage or any of the rooms. As we left after our 3 day stay there was another foul smell outside very much like a drain. Apart from this it was great. Lots of storage too for longer stays. Beautiful setting and safe patio area. Operating the hotwater/central heating was a bit of an issue and somewhat confusing, partly because the instructions weren't as clear and as detailed as they could have been, but we got round the issue and we were ok. Our only other comment was that the lounge are would benefit from better and softer lighting such as standard lamp or table lights near the seating area. But all in all a great cottage in a quiet location, well equipped and well furnished.

  • "When we arrived we were greeted by a very strong smell in the kitchen."

I phoned the owner who said it was probably the cleaning agents used. This settled but never completely went away. More of a concern is the twin bedroom which had a very strong smell, not unlike the smell of gas. By the end of our week, it was even stronger. I hope the next guests were able to get things sorted. The bedding was not as advertised in your photos and just had what I would say were cheap duvet covers and very cheap flimsy pillows. The shower and shampoo gel was a cheap Wilko shower and soap dispenser. The en-suite bathroom smelt mouldy so much so that my husband’s asthma was started off when he used the loo on the first night and had to use the other loo down the corridor the rest of the week due to this fact. The BBQ was rusty. The batteries in the tv remote were dead and no spares around. The DVD didn’t work either. Also, there were no personal touches, and I know we are post Covid etc but a few luxury touches would have been nice. We have booked with Sykes on a few occasions and always felt the standard to be high but this property let the side down I’m afraid. I would be very unhappy if I booked a week in August 23 and paid £1969.00!! I feel that the owner Mrs Nixon should take a look herself at the property and not just leaving it to the cleaner to sort. The barn was in a lovely quiet spot at the edge of a forest so we enjoyed a peaceful week. Alyson Halliday

The kitchen is fully equipped (although the knives could do with sharpening :-)), there’s also a barbecue outside. The living area is spacious and comfortable with a very effective log burner for chilly evenings (although the heating is very good). The bedrooms are a good size and the beds are comfortable, there’s plenty of room for 6 adults here. The location was perfect for us, it’s a very pleasant 30 - 40 minute walk to the village pubs, or a 5 minute drive, and Belford is very nice with a convenient Coop supermarket. The chip shop looked good but we didn’t try it as we had a reservation at the Potted Lobster in Bamburgh (highly recommended but book several weeks, if not months ahead!). In addition to Bamburgh lots of other attractions are within 20-30 minutes drive of the cottage - E.g., Alnwick or Alnmouth to the south and Holy Island to the north. Best of all is the pure peace and tranquillity. Just sitting on the terrace all you can hear is bird song. There’s no traffic as the road only leads to the farm. We also saw hares along the lane in the evening.

The bathroom and en-suite were lovely, and everything was immaculately clean. The situation, near the A1, was very handy for travel to the coast or the beautiful countryside inland and we didn't hear any traffic noise. In fact during the week the A1 was amazingly quiet. Tractors did occasionally go past ,much to our dog's annoyance, but this is a farm road, and behind the cottage. The patio is very private, though not completely enclosed, but at the end of September we didn't have the French doors open. In summer you would have to watch your dog didn't wander out of the grounds. We found the heating very easy to operate, and there is a log burner (with a plentiful supply of logs) for very cold weather, though we didn't need it.. Although out of the way the cottage is on Sainsbury's delivery route and within easy access of a well stocked Co-Op in Belford. We were welcomed by the Farmer who lives just up the lane and on hand should any problems arose, which they didn't. There are some good walks from the cottage including to Cuthberts Cave which is on land owned by the farm and well worth a visit for fun climbing for the kids and a wonderful view from the top of the rock outcrop. The whole area offers many walks either on the coast or in the Cheviots. For the kids we spent time at Hatherslaw Mill plus little train, Chillingham Castle which is brilliant and a spooky must, a boat trip to the Farnes and up the lighthouse on Longstone ( lots of seals and a few young puffins), Holy Island and watching the tide come in across the road and a lot of time on both sandy beaches and rocky shores. It had all the necessary facilities but there was no real 'care' for the people renting the cottage; there were cobwebs around the doors, the filter and water condenser in the tumble drier were full so obviously hadn't been checked by the cleaner or owner. It was kind to have left two pints of milk - but that was all that was left! I think it's unkind to expect holiday makers to have to take basics like salt and pepper, oil and vinegar. Also there was a distinct lack of appropriate cooking tools; frying pans, oven trays.... given that the cottage can accommodate 6 people. In the information, it described the cottage as being 1mile out of Belford, well it was almost a mile to the top of the drive before the drive into Belford - in fact it nearer to 2.5 miles which made it a little remote.

Would stay again. We had a lovely week, the weather was good, lots of things to see in easy reach. The owner met us explained things about the cottage then left us to it all good.

  • "A lovely comfortable cottage in a very peaceful location."

Great walks from the cottage, so that we didn’t use the car for three days! Spacious and well equipped. No WiFi, but we did have good reception with Giffgaff. If only the garden was fully secure so that we could let the dog out it would be perfect!

No phone signal in and around to cottage but rather than Google there were many leaflets and ideas of places to visit available in the cottage.

  • "This really is a very comfortable cottage."

We were 3 adults and a labrador so space was not an issue but even for 6 people there is ample room. Most impressive was the range of items provided for the guests' use - all the cutlery, crockery and utensils along with microwave, dishwasher and so forth. Best of all was the separate laundry room with washer and tumble drier. The furnishings are of a high standard, the bedding and towels first class and, most importantly, the beds were very comfortable. We also liked the isolation and privacy at Gardener's Cottage and the dog appreciated his own large area of grass to entertain himself in! Downsides? Not really. If staying connected via the internet is important it is worth noting that there is no wifi and the phone signal is patchy but 4g is available in Belford, about 2 miles away. We had very good weather during our stay but I noticed that the cottage was centrally heated and had a wood-burning stove. I can imagine it would be very cosy to come back to after a bracing walk on a cold December day. I would unhesitatingly recommend the Cottage - we have experienced good and bad in the past and this has been one of the best.

Lexi our greyhound thought it was wonderful with all the walks we went on and the whole place is very dog friendly, think we will book there again and would recommend it to anyone who wanted a really chilled out holiday.

Fantastic location on a quiet lane, with no other properties nearby, so very private. Plenty of peace and quiet, with just birdsong and the sound of the river. Also little light pollution, so great views of the night sky!

  • "We holiday in Northumberland 3-4 times each year and Gardeners Cottage is definitely one of the best holiday homes we have ever stayed in."

The Cottage was warm and welcoming when we arrived - unlike several properties we have had the misfortune of staying in during the winter months. Very clean and comfortable with excellent consideration given to guest comfort - we would not hesitate to book the cottage again. Lovely & private location but close to local amenties of Belford & Berwick and the excellent local beaches. Can also recommend the Kielder Observatory - well worth a visit.

The cottage is on its own - bliss! A point to note is that we both have Vodafone mobiles & struggled for any signal in the cottage and even surrounding area. (Other networks may be different). But this suited us just fine! The cottage was very well equipped, very warm & comfortable. We have stayed in quite a number of cottages but this was definitely one of our favourites. The owner called in to see us & was very welcoming . Little extras like tea, coffee, sugar & milk on arrival were a nice touch. Highly recommended!
