Let's look at the coast - a natural World Heritage Site teeming with wildlife, superb sandy beaches, all kinds of water sports and fantastic fossil-hunting. There are big family-friendly resorts like Bournemouth and Weymouth featuring a huge variety of things to see and do, as well as charming, smaller resorts like Lyme Regis.
If you're after a large cottage in Dorset with plenty of walking opportunities on your doorstep, you're in for a treat, with mile upon mile of public footpaths including the magnificent South West Coast Path.
Inland lie sleepy, thatched villages and market towns oozing atmosphere and an absolute delight to browse. This is Thomas Hardy country and you can trace his footsteps on a variety of trails.
