Cumbria is the second largest of the English counties after
Yorkshire, and to many, it is synonymous with that sparkling jewel
in the nation's crown - the Lake
District . The stunning Lake District National Park is
indeed part of Cumbria, but this region is blessed with not one,
but parts of two of the nation's most stunning National Parks;
a small area of the Yorkshire
Dales National Park also falls within Cumbria, as do
the mountains of the North Pennines and the Howgill fells. Made up
of parts of what was once North Yorkshire and North Lancashire, as
well as Cumberland and Westmorland, Cumbria extends as far north as
Hadrian's
Wall in the Scottish
Borders, encompasses the lush beauty of the river Eden
and the Eden
Valley in the east and counts the lovely seaside
resort of St. Bees and the fishing ports of Whitehaven and
Workington among its county towns. Idyllic Cumbria cottages can be
found in all corners of the region, offering so much more choice
than 'just' Lake District holiday cottages.
Of course, Lakeland cottages are justifiably popular. With a wealth
of natural beauty, including pristine lakes and high mountain
peaks, and as much adventure or relaxation as you can cope with,
the towns and villages of the south of the county make perfect
bases for Cumbria cottage holidays. Kendal is on the edge
of the Lake District National Park, and has castles, historic
houses and museums as well as iconic villages such as Windermere,
Bowness
and Ambleside all
within easy reach. In the south of the region, Yorkshire Dales
cottages at beautiful Sedbergh, an
established 'book town' nestling beneath the Howgill fells,
are popular with walkers and mountain bikers. Dentdale borders
both Cumbria and North Yorkshire; a Cumbrian cottage holiday in
this region of the Lakeland fells is a walker's paradise, while
the Settle to
Carlisle
railway passes through the pretty village of Dent, a quiet hamlet
of whitewashed houses with a couple of pubs, shops and an
interesting visitor centre.
Further to the north, a Cumbrian cottage in the scenic Lune Valley
region has much to offer the visitor. Base yourself in the pretty
hamlets and villages around Kirby
Lonsdale and enjoy local beauty spots such as
Devil's Bridge and Ruskin's View and nearby attractions,
which include the very best of both Yorkshire and Cumbria. Or how
about a Cumbria cottage holiday in the unspoilt Eden Valley? Just a
short drive from beautiful Ullswater and Keswick in the heart
of the Lake District, this lush, open green valley feels a world
away from the busier Lakeland honey pot towns and villages,
particularly in the summer season. Charming market towns such as
Kirkby
Stephen, Lazonby, Armathwaite and Appleby in
Westmorland offer historic castles, ancient markets, local craft
centres, traditional shops and welcoming pubs. Walking and cycling
can be as gentle as a family stroll along a river or as challenging
as a section of one of the six established routes passing through
the region, such as the C2C cycle route or Wainwright's famous
Coast-to-Coast walk. Abundant opportunity for fishing, water
sports, golf and other sports exist. Visit historic Alston, take a
trip on the Settle to Carlisle railway or
perhaps use your Cumbria cottage as a base for exploring the
region's larger towns, such as Penrith, home of the
famous Cumberland sausage, or the border town of Carlisle, with its
impressive castle, cathedral and extensive shopping. In the north
of the region you'll find yourself in Hadrian's Wall
Country; visit the sites, archaeological digs and visitor centres
to appreciate the full importance of this Unesco World Heritage
Site, and marvel at the legacy of the Romans.
A Cumbria cottage holiday in the west of the region is ideal for
those seeking the very best of both worlds. Here, mountains and sea
collide, with four stunning valleys linking coast and countryside.
Wasdale is a place of superlatives, unrivalled scenery and, in
brooding Wastwater, its deepest lake, and Scafell Pike, its highest
mountain. Enjoy Ravenglass on the
coast; visit Muncaster Castle and Gardens or the Roman Bath, or
take the Ravenglass Steam Railway into the heart of the Lakes, to
the quaint hamlets of Eskdale, Boot and Dalegarth. Visit roaring
Stanley Ghyll Force, or take a dizzying drive over the Hardknott
Pass for scenic views. Enjoy a tranquil walk or cycle through
Ennerdale forest and around the lake, far from the busy crowds of
the more readily accessible Lakeland towns. Reflect a while at the
ancient standing stones of Kinniside stone circle, or head for the
coast and discover Maryport's heritage harbour area, with a new
Visitor Centre, Aquarium, and fascinating Roman and Maritime
museums. Choose a Cumbrian cottage in St. Bees, with fine stretches
of sandy beach, cliff top walks and abundant wildlife, and
you've all the makings of a traditional seaside holiday but
with the beauty of the Lake District on your doorstep. The port
town of Whitehaven has enough for a day's visit, with its
developing harbour area, Georgian architecture and museums
dedicated to the town's former trades in rum, coal mining and
ship building.
The combined beauty of the counties jointly represented by Cumbria
offers a truly mouth-watering holiday prospect. A traditional
Lakeland cottage in Coniston, Keswick or
Buttermere; a
Yorkshire Dales cottage in the rolling countryside around Dent or
Sedbergh, or a cosy hideaway in the tranquil, verdant Eden Valley.
Whichever area you choose, your Cumbria cottage holiday is sure to
be memorable one, leaving you yearning to return many times over.
