Dust off those boots and head for Upper Wharfedale, a region of
unspoilt countryside offering wonderful walks in the Yorkshire
Dales National Park. Stay in a Buckden cottage and savour the
village's tranquil atmosphere and welcomingly slower pace of
life.
Surrounded by dramatic scenery, explore the soaring fells and
remote moors, tracing the steps of the 'Calendar Girls' and
that famous country vet. Find cascading waterfalls, flower-filled
meadows and dense ash woods. Much of the land around and about is
owned by the National Trust, enhancing its special appeal. Climb to
the top of Buckden Pike for amazing 360-degree views. Another
popular route is the circular walk from Buckden to Cray.
Long-distance walkers can test their stamina on the Dales Way or
the shorter, but equally challenging Dales Traverse. Alternatively,
opt for a gentle riverside walk to Starbotton or Hubberholme - home
to J.B. Priestley's grave.
Back in Buckden mix with locals - though essentially peaceful, the
village has a thriving local community and there's a lengthy
list of annual events. Enjoy refreshments in the pub, a meal in the
restaurant and find all your essentials in the village stores.
Discover more about the region's past at the National
Trust's exhibition in a village barn. Or while away an hour in
the riverside gallery, where you'll also find a National Park
Information Point. And don't miss a visit to the local farm
shop - the best place to purchase meat and more for a meal to
remember in your Buckden holiday cottage!
