  • "The cottage was fairly well equipped, couldn’t find any oven gloves so had to use a folded tea towel."

The bed squeaked with every movement and the double quilt was in a cover too small for it so feet and seeds were constantly uncovered. Despite this the cottage was quite warm and comfortable. The only real gripe was the lack of hot water. The water was stone cold when we arrived and did heat up overnight but still not enough to have a bath or more than a quick shower. Also the heated towel rail in bathroom wasn’t working so no way of drying towels after a shower or bath.

  • "The first thing to note about this property is that there is no personal outside space, being as it is surrounded on two sides by a car park, and one side by the road into Hope Cove, so forget any ideas of sitting out with your morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening; equally there is nowhere to hang wet clothes or towels."

The communal grassy outside space is fine but you have to cross the car park to get to it and the clothes drier is far away so quite inconvenient. Also at the time we were staying an unknown dog owner was letting their dog poo on the communal grass area (we counted seven separate lumps), so all of this made it unappealing use or let our toddler play there. Inside the property was VERY clean but I only scored 2 overall for cleanliness because of the dog poo. The kitchen/lounge area has nice high ceilings and is very bright. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped though it would have helped to have some washing sponges provided - these would have been more useful than the so-called 'posh' box of milk and sugar sachets. We found the hot water supply to be very hit-and-miss, even when using the booster so sometimes had to have cold showers. Overall not very impressive but we very much appreciate the location so near to the beach (5 mins walk) and in that sense it is good value.

  • "Difficult to find, directions are rubbish, but when you get there you’ll be glad you did!"

! Lovely place, gardens well maintained everything you need in the cottage. Thoroughly recommend. Only gripe would be that a small freezer would be v useful as shops are miles away and icebox no way big enough.

  • "Unfortunately I would not stay here again."

The cleanliness is to be questioned. The oven smoked due to the amount of grease on the bottom that hasn't been cleaned and the grill tray was covered in old grease. Photos taken as proof. The cutlery and crockery also had to be washed before use. To which I might add that the water temperature isn't hot enough for greasy dishes. Also the aluminium blinds in the living room look like they haven't been cleaned in a very long time. Photos taken as proof The toilet seat is missing one of the fittings and has been stuck with silicone. The only place to put the toilet roll is on top of the toilet or the side of the bath. As my husband turned to reach for the toilet roll, the seat moved. Photos as proof The 2 seat sofa has an odour of vomit, this was noticed when we sat to watch the TV. The double bedroom has an odour of stale sweat which was apparent when the door had been shut. There is a lack of privacy at gillys cottage as every resident passes by the window to get to the car park. Also in the ad for gillys it shows benches to sit outside, it doesn't explain that the ones for gillys are through the other side of the car park and down a steep grass bank. Due to the above issues we cut the stay short and left 3 days early.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are disappointed to read that you had a few issues during your stay, please know that if you had made us aware of anything during your stay, we would have rectified them immediately. The oven has now been professionally cleaned, we can only apologies this was not picked up prior to your stay. We were surprised about the comment of the sofa as this was new in June, we have visited the property and investigated thoroughly, we cannot detect any odours that you mention. We have passed your comments on to the owner regarding privacy, who will look to address the matter. We are truly sorry you felt the need to leave early, this clearly was not the right property match for you. We do hope you still managed to enjoy the beautiful setting and all that Hope Cove has to offer. Property Owner

Query fitting different type of window protection? Good use of small space No problems with parking. Enjoyed watching the sheep - and view generally good! Slightly further from centre of Hope than I had expected. Overall a good week in comfortable accommodation.

Settees were really uncomfortable-too low and small.Notice that several visitors have made the same comments, are the owners not reading the reviews and taking action?Instructions on finding the accommodation were not very clear, the first left was a road leading away from the village. It was in fact the first building on the left after the Car Parking signs!

  • "Hope Cove is a gorgeous little village and well worth a weeks visit."

The accommodation itself is clean comfortable and although on the edge of the village, is only a short walk to the centre. Only one minor issue during the stay where the shower hose started leaking. It want a major leak and I emailed the people looking after the property making them aware so that they could get a replacement hose for the next occupants. The handyman however picked up on the email and was round with a replacement hose the following morning, excellent service. In fact the service with anyone linked to the company was very good, everyone was helpful and positive. The only downside was the specific location of the cottage and its privacy. The cottage is at the edge of a carpark servicing the various flats, and the windows look out onto the carpark. It means anyone coming and going to their cars look directly into the cottage's large windows. What I didn't realise was that there is a large field/garden at the back of the car park which is enclosed on three sides and ideal for anyone with a dog. Very handy and a good plus point

  • "Very well furnished and modern, clean little bungalow within or next-door to a block of 10 or more other apartments."

Very quiet area on the edge of hope Cove. 5 minutes walk down to the beach and bars etc. The shared garden is very big like a small field but is open in a corner at the car park end so take extra care with a dog. Hope Cove is lovely. Everything you need is there for a great holiday. I would love to come back and be very happy to stay at the cottage. I would recommend for a couple or small family. It was great to be so close to everything and to visit such a friendly place. Hope Cove is a real liitle treat and a treasure.

  • "We had a lovely holiday and the owners have done well to make the apartment comfortable, light filled and a nice place to be - when it’s actually just a converted garage with car park on 2 sides and road on the other 2!"

Given the tiny size and compromised aspect it was very expensive however. Our one suggestion would be to replace the bathroom towel rail (which was broken) with a really good heater and put a drying rack over the bath for wetsuits and beach towels as there was nowhere to dry things on rainy days.

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
