If you like things sweet, you're in for a treat as Market Drayton is the home of gingerbread, introduced during the days of the Empire when Clive of India brought home the warming ginger spice. Join one of the intriguing walking trails - the Boyhood Haunts of Clive of India, Murder & Mayhem or the Children's Wild Adventure Animal Trail. Admire the attractive half-timbered and red brick buildings adorning the centre. Look out for the 14th Century sandstone church on Phoenix Bank and also Buttercross, an old stone portico complete with fire bell. Built to shelter market stalls, the town continues to host a street market every Wednesday, when Cheshire Street throngs with tradesmen selling everything from linens to local produce, including the local WI's damson jam and gin.
Head out of town into beautiful countryside, laden with attractions for everyone to enjoy. The World Heritage Site of Ironbridge. The grottos and follies of Hawkstone Park. The glorious gardens of Wollerton Old Hall. Walk along the towpath of the Shropshire Union Canal to the impressive 40-step aqueduct.
