Enjoy an escape with a difference at St Abbs cottages on Berwickshire's spectacular coast.
Blessed with a wild and rugged setting, the secluded village of St Abbs is not much more than a cluster of fishermen's cottages overlooking a sea-swept harbour. So why stay here? Primarily to dive, surf or birdwatch.
Let's take the latter first. An important landmark for miles around, St Abbs Head was created by an extinct volcano and is now a famous National Nature Reserve. Vast colonies of birds congregate on the sheer cliffs - kittiwakes, fulmars, razorbills - to name but a few.
These same cliffs boast dazzling rock formations below the water too and, with crystal clear seas and fascinating sea life, have created an underwater paradise. There are many wonderful dive sites to choose from, not least Cathedral Rock, which erupts from the sea bed close to the harbour, revealing a huge rocky arch encrusted with marine life. Other sites to look out for include Anemone Gully, the Black Carrs and The Horn.
For surfing and swimming, wander along the coastal path ten minutes south to Coldingham Sands, where colourful beach huts and Edwardian villas evoke scenes from another era. Continue on to Eyemouth, a bustling port and ideal spot for a fabulous fish lunch.
Anything else? Fishing and boat trips from the harbour. Even llama trekking at St Abbs Head - it's said they make the perfect companion for a coastal walk to remember!
So as you can see, a St Abbs cottage holiday has many a surprise in store!
