Re-charge your batteries and escape to the stunning North York Moors National Park, a magical mix of rolling moorland, peaceful dales and rugged coastline. Your base? One of our North York Moors cottages, of course.

The area is a paradise for walkers, with a number of well-marked circular routes, long distance paths like the Cleveland Way and cliff-top trails along the Heritage Coast. Other equally enjoyable activities include horse riding, cycling, hang gliding, sailing and fishing.

For a day with a difference, take a nostalgic journey across the moors by steam train on the celebrated North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Trace the footsteps of novelist and vet, James Herriot. Or visit the pretty village of Goathland, better known as 'Aidensfield' in the drama series, Heartbeat.

Many places to explore in the North York Moors

Other idyllic villages not-to-be-missed include Hutton-le-hole where there's a fascinating folk museum; Rosedale Abbey famous for glass making and the historic market village of Thornton-le-Dale. Also worth a visit are the larger market towns of Pickering, Helmsley, Malton and Kirkbymoorside.

Historic attractions range from Iron Age hill forts, impressive castles and ancient abbeys, to reminders from the Second World War. Further afield, but an easy day trip, Castle Howard is a prime example of Baroque splendour and a must on anyone's itinerary.

Keen to teach the children something new? Then plan a family fossil hunt. The region is a geologist's dream come true, with plenty of remains to be found - even dinosaur footprints at the coast.
