When you think of the Lake District you picture lakes, mountains and often hordes of tourists. But head west to the Solway Coast and discover a quieter side, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty blessed with delightful coastal villages like Allonby.
Prepare to gaze in awe at the wide, horseshoe bay, backed by sand dunes and affording sweeping vistas of the Isle of Man and southern Scotland. Look out for birdlife, the occasional seal and dolphin, wild Allonby ponies, not to mention tame ones for rides on the sands.

The region has a colourful history and other places of interest include Milefortlet 21 (World Heritage Site), Anglo-Saxon saltpans and stately homes like Mirehouse and Caerlaverock Castle just across the border.
