The elegant Victorian town of Windermere sits at the heart of the National Park and is a major tourist centre for lovers of water sports, walking and climbing. And the town has everything you need, including all kinds of shops and an array of welcoming cafes, restaurants and pubs.
Just a mile from town is Lake Windermere, England's largest lake some 10.5 miles long. The National Trust owns the western shoreline, along with Fellfoot Park in the south, a delightfully restored Victorian estate with picnic areas, tea room and boat hire.
