Explore the Isle of Wight

The fifteen main towns ensure holidaymakers choosing Isle of Wight cottages are well provided for; those found along the coast in particular have an appealingly laid-back atmosphere. Though not the capital, Cowes, at the northern tip of the island, is probably the most well known, largely thanks to it major annual yachting jamboree, Cowes Week. Taking place in late July/early August each year, this internationally important regatta draws crowds from around the world, and whether you're a fully paid up member of the sailing fraternity or a confirmed landlubber, there is much to be enjoyed at this annual event. Osborne House, at nearby East Cowes, is one of the island's most visited attractions. Built in the mid nineteenth century, it was the summer residence of Queen Victoria, and makes a great day out for all the family. Yarmouth and Freshwater are two of the larger towns on the pretty western coast of the island, and an Isle of Wight cottage in this area gives access to the island's most iconic landmark, the defining Needles Rocks. Alum Bay, with its striking sandstone cliffs, is a good beach for viewing the Needles; you can also take a boat trip out to the lighthouse and rocks from here. Other nearby beaches popular with families includes the sandy bays Colwell and Totland, while windsurfers can hone their skills or have a first attempt at Compton Bay. Freshwater has a small beach and some excellent cliff-top walks, including a marked trail to the Needles viewpoint, together with shops and pubs.

There are historic castles such as Yarmouth and Carisbrooke to explore, plenty of activities for families, such as Dinosaur Isle and Coleman's Animal Farm at Newport. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Ryde makes for a popular day out, as do the island's theme parks, such as the Needles Park at Alum Bay, Blackgang Chine near Ventnor and Robin Hill Country Adventure Park. Nature is abundant and garden lovers will appreciate those found throughout the island; Mottistone Manor on West Wight and Nunwell House and Gardens are just two good examples. An Isle of Wight cottage holiday provides the perfect setting for outdoor adventure too; the island's quiet roads, bridleways and footpaths are ideal terrain for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders, with over 500 miles of way marked trails to explore. Or for something different, how about a spot of llama trekking, surfing, diving, the thrill of speedway, the freedom of paragliding or the challenge of orienteering?

Isle of Wight cottages offer the perfect antidote to modern living. The simple pleasures of a family walk along the cliffs of Tennyson Down, of following in dinosaur footprints with the kids at Hanover Point, dallying on a woodland walk at Priory Bay, where forest meets seashore, or rock pooling at Bembridge Bay... how easy it is to while away a day! Music lovers should visit in June, and take in the Isle of Wight Festival, or chill out at Bestival, a second major music festival in September. Choose your Isle of Wight cottage in the north of the island for access to the Osborne House Classical Concert in July…whatever your purpose in visiting, an Isle of Wight cottage holiday will be sure to have you coming back for more.
