The Carriage at High Barn Heritage

We've spent a wonderful week in the carriage at High Barn.

Every thing you require has been catered for, and the best thing is the peace and quiet, it was brilliant. Absolutely genius turning the carriage into a holiday let and it's been done to an excellent standard. We will definitely be returning.

Fantastic accommodation.

Beautiful property. Let down by the settee and the mattress both were quite uncomfortable.

The carriage was lovely and very quirky.

It has everything you could need and the welcome basket was a really nice touch. The location is beautiful and quite and there is lots of local wildlife to see. The only slight downside was the bed wasn't very comfortable but not so bad it impacted the holiday.

Pro's, grass was perfectly trimmed.

Inside was as described by sykes and a nice welcome pack. Great shower and beds. Con's Weeds 4 foot high under the carriages concealed the fact that there was a railway carriage above them. Nothing like the sykes photo of the property. The steps to the front door could use a can of spray paint-around £1.50 to cover the yellow primer coming throught the black. The whole side of the carriage could use some paint to make it look like sykes photos. The balcony from the bedroom looks like it hadn't been swept all season. The chairs and table looked like it wouldn't hold an adult for sitting and the table wasn't useable. The floor between the kitchen and the bedroom urgently needs supports from below as there was so much noise while walking that if one had to use the toilet through the night, there is no way the partner can sleep through the floor noise. In the bathroom, the floor tiles were cracked and when stood on had water seeping up through the tiles. I assume it is a leaking toilet. It's not a new problem as at least one tile had very little grout around it. It would have been nice to know that the hob was a conduction hob. We luckly brought our own frying pan as the one supplied was old and wouldnt fry an egg properly but couldn't use ours on a conduction hob. Obviously sykes hasn't visited the property for quite a while as the description left a lot to be desired. No wow factor for my wife as it was for her birthday. It looked like an old railway carriage that hasn't been looked after properly and for the price charged isn't acceptable. Both sykes and the owner need to review what is staring the client in the face on arrival and lack of attention to detail.

Another relaxing holiday at The Carriage, our third visit.

Ideally situated for exploring local places of interest. We enjoyed some beautiful countryside walks on the local footpaths around the area. Such a peaceful location, loved watching the deer come out from the woods to feed and the owl flying over as well as lots of other wildlife Hope to come again sometime. Thank you.

Fact that one feels the mattress springs makes sleeping bit difficult and might need looking at.

But the location with approx. 25 deer, a range of birds and hares visiting every day and the quirkiness of the carriage makes the stay unforgettable. James is the kindest person ever and what he and his father can do for you they will. Now, being back home, we feel homesick for the rural life we enjoyed the last 2 weeks.

A fantastic break away from everything!

To wake up to stunning views and hear and see wildlife around us was heavenly. The Carriage is beautifully laid out with all you're needs including a lovely welcome basket to start the holiday off with a smile. If you are a railway fan you'll love it..... I just loved it because it was so quirky and in a great location

Our second visit to the Carriage, love the quirkiness of staying in a converted railway carriage but with all mod cons.

A perfect location for a relaxing break. So convenient for exploring the local area. We also made good use of the local buses too. Hope to visit again and have already recommended the property to friends.

A really quirky holiday venue!

It was absolutely perfect for a week away for my husband’s 60th birthday. Very quiet location but lots to do in the local areas. Carriage was spotlessly clean and had everything you could have asked for and more! Lots of outdoor seating for when the weather allows. A lovely welcome pack for us on arrival: jams, crisps, milk, crumpets and wine! James came to greet us and even popped down to wish my husband a happy birthday. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Amazing place , lovely location

I had a fabulous week.

The Carriage is extremely comfortable and fully equipped with everything required whilst on holiday. It has a definite charm. The location was, for me, ideal. It is away from the normal hustle and bustle and being positioned on the edge of a lovely meadow gives a fantastic view across the Essex countryside. The peacefulness and tranquility was welcomed as were sightings of various birds, deer, hares and a beautiful hot air balloon overhead on my last day. The location was excellent for the places that I wanted to visit. James was extremely friendly and helpful.

Lovely conversion.

Very comfortable, well equipped and the owner obviously thought of everything you could need for a very good holiday. The peace and quiet was a welcome respite from urban living and we loved it. We can't rate it high enough! We will return and have told all our friends about it.

The most amazing holiday, carriage and surroundings was wonderful, it was so good we have rebooked to stay again in September in the brake wagon this time, welcome pack was a lovely touch and very welcoming, I think an air-frier would make an added bonus in the kitchen

We’re just back from a lovely week in the train carriage and totally enjoyed it.

A lovely surprise welcome hamper with local produce in it. Lovely walks around it. Everything you need in there and so comfortable. Definitely recommend a stay there.

We felt that all about the Carriage was FIRST CLASS and ideal for wild life lovers.

However, having to make two visits to Chelmsford Hospital we could not find any info in the carriage regarding addresses and phone numbers for Doctor's and Hospital's. After the second hospital visit we decided to call it a day and return home. We did manage to contact the owner James to let him know.

It was like a tardis so much room inside,a very clever idea to have a combination microwave.

Needed the heating a couple of nights as the weather turned cold, soon warmed up. The view of surrounding fields ment we saw all kinds of wild life, even had a muntjac deer go under the train. No WiFi but never had a problem with our phones. Would definitely recommend the train. Comfortable clean, and great position.

Where do I start, what a beautifully different experience.

The accommodation was amazing, it was so peaceful and a perfect home from home week. We had chance to relax and unwind in comfort amid the beautiful setting of High Barn Heritage. We had the best nights sleep ever!!! There are lots of things to do in the surrounding area too. We would highly recommend to anyone wanting quiet break.

This cottage is so peaceful just what you need to get away from it all.

Lovely and clean and once we got the hang of the heating it was very cosy too. The sun rises are amazing (weather permitting). From the cottage we spotted deer in the fields and loads of different birds. It was lovely watching the squirrel in the trees too. The bed was a little uncomfortable for us but I do suffer badly with back problems so would not bother others. All in all a beautifully converted carriage.

The carriage is exactly as shown on the site.

It is a really comfortable ‘house’, well equipped, space is well laid out. It felt somewhat like a cocoon to me, really nice and warm. Loved to see the deer near the treeline, the pheasants around the carriage and heard foxes and owls, so rural! I couldn’t fault it. I would highly recommend it and would love to stay here again.

An enjoyable experience to stay in such a quirky place, with many home comforts.

The property and its location surpassed our expectations.

The owner is to be applauded for his vision and the manner in which he has carried it out. The carriage was extremely well fitted out and had all the comforts you required. The welcome gift box was an added bonus and surprise. The location was just as good and the positioning of the outside seating and balcony areas around the carriage to catch the sun was an excellent idea. Cannot fault it we highly recommended this holiday.

For anyone seeking accommodation a little bit different then High Barn fits the bill.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable time in a beautiful area.So much thought has gone into fitting out the carriages and the end result is commendable.

It was quite unique, well equipped and very comfortable.

It was an absolutely fabulous place.

Above our expectations, the location and accommodation just blew myself and my wife away. The carriage was well equipped to a very high standard. With everything you could want in a holiday. There is no negatives with this location or our stay. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing location away from town and people this is the place to stay. But you are in easy reach of towns in either direction.

We had a fantastic week at The Carriage - everything we needed was included in the carriage and the welcome hamper was lovely.

We enjoyed many days out while there as well as spending time enjoying the sun in the outdoor seating areas - chilling and reading our books which is what was needed! All essesntials were included in the holiday price as well as items to fire up the BBQ which we did a couple of times. We loved being here so much we are thinking of coming back again later in the year! Thank you so much for sharing you carriages with us!

We can thoroughly recommend The Carriage for an extremely quiet, restful holiday with no internet distraction.

Everything you need is supplied, the only thing we suggest is a mattress topper as the mattress was a little on the firm side. James, our host, was informative and available but not intrusive. Handy for Halstead and many places of interest. Lots of wildlife on view, marvellous!

Very relaxing stay, enjoyed the surrounding countryside and wildlife.

Property had everything we required and owner was welcoming and helpful. We found picturesque villages and interesting places to visit.

We had a very restful and peaceful stay at the Carriage.

Although the bathroom is a little cramped, it was fine for our needs. The living and kitchen area was more spacious than we expected and the light from all the windows is glorious. Being raised on wheels, the views are great and we were treated to wonderful sightings of deer and other wildlife as well as the changing sky. The steps to the door do need negotiating carefully but there are good handrails. They would not be suitable for anyone with poor mobility however. We certainly hope to visit again.

Exelent stay here at high barn carrage, james was great with the handover on local info.

And history of the resoration and purpose of the site... the welcome pack was great, wine nibbles jam and buns.. carrages were clean tidy and fresh. Bed was really comfy as was the sofa... no wi fi but a decent 4g signal on most networks. Shower very hot, althou a bit small. And bring your slippers as the floors are wooden and cold on bare feet... the local wildlife also pay a visit. Monkjack and fallow deer, which was great to see. All in all restoration and conversion are to a very high standard, and i recomend a stay here. If just for the novelty of being a railway carage....

We had a fabulous stay in the train carriage.

It is very well equipped with some lovely touches such as a welcome basket and games. It was spotlessly clean and we had a much needed relaxing break away from the madness of life in general. James came to welcome us and was friendly and helpful. The only downside we found was the bed was very hard and uncomfortable (we know personal taste) but we used the sofa bed and managed to sleep well. I would recommend a stay in this quirkey accomodation

A superb place to stay and certainly different from usual B&B.

Carriage so well kitted out we lacked nothing *. Even with a 2 hour power cut we stayed cosy and warm. Can thoroughly recommend it to others. Hilary *A couple of hooks for tea towel etc would be useful!

Simply put James was a gentleman- the train Carage was warm cosy and in the perfect place to allow us to rest up sit back and relax … kitchen well equipped and very easy to use.

The decor inside is just perfect- it makes you want to smile even before you get inside the train looks Amazing - the bed is a dream bed. So relaxing and the shower hot and refreshing- Telly and sofa perfect to snuggle up on and a dinner table area nice to sit at …. We could not have chosen a better stay Laurence and Helen

We had a lovely 3 night stay, it was very clean and was exactly what we was expecting.

Even though we went in late November once the heaters were turned on it got nice and cosy and wasn’t too cold. Would definitely recommend!

An unusual holiday property of railway carriages which have been superbly and comfortably refurbished into holiday accommodation.

The setting is lovely and very tranquil as well as being central for a number of National Trust, English Heritage properties as well as the coast. We also had a theatre trip into London by motoring to Stratford and catching the Tube. Overall we had a really lovely week and will return.

Had a wonderful break in the lovely old railway carriages, everything was so clean, and the carriages so well laid out.

Would recommend this holiday to anyone who loves railways old and new. The welcome pack was a lovely touch. Looking forward to booking again if possible.

We had a fantastic time.

The carriage has been converted in to a smart stylish holiday home. You are very aware you are staying in a train carriage which is what you want, but it was spacious, stylish and the quality of the fixtures and fittings was high.The shower was great, plenty of power and lovely and hot. A very generous hamper was left for us with local products. There are plenty of areas to sit and enjoy the view. We watched deer every day and red kites. A lovely peaceful area. We have stayed in a few train carriages and this is the best.

Overall a very enjoyable stay in a unique rental.

Everything needed was at hand. No Wi-Fi so you will have to rely on mobile phone signal. Which was just about ok. Very peaceful - within one hour of arriving we were visited by pheasants, wild deer and hares. Very friendly welcome from the owner and the welcome pack was gratefully received. We have also been provided with milk bread, tea and coffee - which would have been a massive bonus if we had arrived late for any reason. The only minus point would be the size of the bathroom - you try fitting a larger one into a railway carriage!! But it was clean and adequate. No real complaint. Bearing in mind what the property is, the owners have done a great job turning it into a very comfortable rental. Thank you.

The Carriage was unusual but spacious and extremely comfortable set in a peaceful location. You definitely need a car to get out and about. The owners made use feel very welcome. A definite property to return to.

Really good holiday.

James was an excellent host, meeting and greeting us on arrival and explaining everything. For this type of holiday, you must enjoy your own company and remoteness. For us it was the perfect place to relax. You need transport to visit surrounding villages and towns though. We would recommend this carriage to anyone who was looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.

A stunning conversion which is well thought out and perfect for those who want a break from the rush of life.

This is a lovely quirky accommodation in a quiet farmland area.

It has been renovated and refurbished to a high standard. Really enjoyed our stay. We will be going back.

Absolutely superb - we would have no hesitation in recommending this property to others.

It has been so thoughtfully converted to a lovely accommodation with everything you need. It is situated in such a peaceful location, beautiful views and we saw hares and deer pass by the carriage. James was very helpful and a lovely 'goody' box was waiting or us on arrival - very much appreciated. This is a 5* property and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. We have stayed in many Sykes properties and this is certainly one of the best.

This amazing, very quirky property has been extremely well converted into accommodation with everything one would need for a short stay.

James has put a lot of thought into converting this old carriage and he should be very proud of the result. It's definitely one for rail enthusiasts with plenty of books and DVDs on the old steam locos available for those wet days indoors.

We had a very pleasant stay in the carriage, which has been very thoughtfully restored.

Plenty of room for us and everything we could possibly want had been provided. Really enjoyed watching the wildlife passing by and the lovely views from both sides of the carriage.

The carriage was everything we had hoped for.

We were looking for quiet, away from people and we definitely got that! Nearby there were a lot of places to visit and eateries too. Coming back to the carriage at night was a very dark experience, had to use the light on my phone. A security light would be very beneficial especially with 7 steps up to the door. Will definitely book again for next year as it’s our kind of holiday.

A quirky but extremely comfortable railway carriage conversion in the heart of peaceful countryside. We were made to feel extremely welcome with a delicious welcome box full of treats. The outside seating is great for enjoying and unwinding each evening after a day out and we would love to visit again. Thank you for a wonderful stay and cracking directions!

A superb, quirky accommodation designed, fitted and equipped to a very high standard.

A beautiful location, very peaceful and with abundant wildlife. Online description was extremely accurate, pictures were recent and true to life and great care was taken in the online description to highlight the nature of the accommodation e.g. specifying the number of steps to get in. Cleanliness was excellent, owners very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The slight reservation in ratings is that the bed was rather too firm for our personal taste.

Just totally fantastic.

A beautiful conversion of an old railway carriage. Enough of the original features to remind us of the age of steam, but enough modern conveniences to make it more comfortable. So peaceful and lovely view. Lots of domestic wildlife. The squirrels are fun. No spiders in the carriage!! A lovely dog and residents in the nearest house...which isn't too near. The owner, James, is friendly and helpful, as well as being a very clever lad for making such a good job of the conversion. The area is superb, so many lovely villages, tea shops and individual shops. Ate twice at The Bell in Sible Hedingham..recommended. Also the Moot House Bistro. There is a great barn in Greenstead Green with cafe and 'stuff'. The two railway experiences are extremely good. Have to say that everyone we met was friendly and helpful. (The only irritant was so many drivers who like to pip their horns if you hesitate for a minute at a junction. What is it with Essex and car horns? ) We had a super holiday and really recommend it.

Great location, very quiet with lanes ideal for cycling and running that pass lovely houses and tiny villages.

Close to retail and designer outlets in Braintree if you need that and the small town of Halstead with independent eateries, supermarkets and an excellent bakery. The coast is an hour away with a variety of resort types from the brassy Clacton to the beautiful West Mersea.

The railway carriage was superb, lovely welcome box, very friendly welcome from owners.

The carriage is situated in a really peaceful location.

It's a quaint home from home. We were really sad to leave. Had a fabulous week there. Travelled to local places most days. we had frequent visits from deers pheasants wild hare and grouse . Saw buzzards, red kites. The owners are really friendly can't do enough for you. Provided us with a nice welcome pack. Can't wait to go back.
