We’ve had many short breaks in similar properties over the years but this was our favourite by far.

The setting is perfect, no road noise, no other people around, very secluded. The main house can be seen as you park up but our privacy was respected and we only met the owner/manager just as we were leaving on the last day. The property itself is really lovely with the huge picture window looking out to the trees and the birdlife. The kitchen is very well equipped, there are only 2 rings on hob but we managed to cook every night with no issues - there are plenty of dishes, glasses, pots/pans and utensils. The bed was comfy, despite being unsure of how springy it was at first - we slept really well with no morning aches. The shower was adequate, nice big shower room. The outside space was great - could sit on the balcony watching the river and listening to it roar (it had been very rainy) - we could actually hear it from inside which was very soothing. The hot tub was a very nice addition - it’s not something we would usually seek out but after a long walk one day we found it very relaxing, especially in the secluded setting. We did use the log burner inside but it was very high maintenance- we struggled to keep it lit - we’re not familiar with using one so maybe that was more down to our inexperience. The one thing that let the property down on comfort was the settee, we found the low back uncomfortable - we had brought films to watch and had hoped to have a lazy day or two lounging on the settee but found it difficult to get comfy. However, as this property was so excellent in every other way it wouldn’t stop us booking again and hope to revisit again in the spring.

Perfect seclusion for a relaxing break.

River Lodge met all our needs, was well equipped, but we mainly came for the hot tub which we used daily after long days out exploring and walking.
