  • "I would highly recommend stable cottage as a place to stay, particularly for the price we paid."

The area was lovely and quiet and everything that we needed was provided. You could argue that it needs some maintenance in areas but really nothing that impacts the stay. Will definitely book again providing the price remains competitive.

  • "Lovely cottage, very quietly situated with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside."

The cottage was very clean, the beds were a little bit hard, but comfortable with cosy blankets and pillows, we slept very well. The kitchen was very well equipped including a microwave and a kettle (both of which were very clean). In the living room there were also books, DVDs, a book for excursions in the region. There were toys for the beach, ironing board, iron and much more. The parking lot was behind the houses, but was easily accessible. You could have parked in front of the small entrance to the courtyard to unload your suitcases and then drive to the parking lot. We also loved the split entrance door. This allowed us to ventilate even better, as the windows could only be opened in the upper part and the window in the smaller bedroom could not be opened. There are beautiful beaches and restaurants within walking distance. Also there is a small grocery store not far in the mobile home camp, but you'd better have a car to make the most of all the options. Mobile phone was only available outside the cottage, but there was fully functional WIFI in the cottage. The cords from the ceiling in the bathroom along with the instantaneous water heater in the shower were new to us, but it all worked really well. All in all it was a great holiday with great weather and we would come back anytime.

  • "Stable Cottage, Sorry to say we won’t stay there again."

The cottage is in a lovely quiet location in a private court yard with other homes. It is well set out, fully equipped and nice scenery around it, unfortunately I didn’t look like the windows had been cleaned inside or out for a long while. Firstly you need to put on your advert that the cottage has private parking but it is up quite a steep slope behind all the dwellings. You can not get near the cottage to unload or load your car. Carrying luggage, shopping etc involves many trips up and down the slope. Not easy if you have health issues, use a walking stick etc. To gain access to the cottage you have to really push on the door to get in due to it sticking. It was that bad we thought a bolt had been left on when we first arrived and you really have to slam it closed when leaving. On entering all looked fine on the surface but there was a smell of damp, even inside the kitchen cupboards, wardrobes and chests of drawers. We opened all the windows to let air in apart from the small bedroom one that would not open at all and soon found out that none of the interior doors would close as they were swollen. The freezer part of the fridge was so full of old ice we couldn’t have put anything in it even if we had wanted to. The bread bin had a large brown stain in it and still had crumbs in it from previous guests. We had to clean it out and cover the base with kitchen roll. The coffee table felt sticky and had to be cleaned before we could use it, The place mats on the dinning table were covered in old food some were stuck together so bad we finished up washing the whole lot. Luckily we had brought a table cloth so we used that instead. Having found these issues we then spent a while re-cleaning the kitchen work tops and re-dusting everywhere else. We even rewashed the crockery and cutlery and it’s tray just in case. Where the shower base meets the walls was full of black mould. A Sign in the Cottage read our hearts are at the beach, I felt like adding a sign saying along with your cleaners. Maintenance hasn’t been high on the owners list either. The toilet seat was loose and moved around when we sat on it, the flush handle was loose. The toilet wouldn’t flush a few times while we were there because the cistern wasn’t filling with water. We had to take the cistern top off and hold the ball cock down to make it fill. That was full of debris which must have been blocking it. The shower head wouldn’t stay up. We had to tie it in place to stop it falling to the bottom. One of the legs was hanging off one of the arm chairs so we had to fix it before there was an accident. The other arm chair had obviously been fixed too, whoever did it had put the foot on it the wrong way round. We left that alone. On the guests instructions it said there was a hoover, we found the cupboard it was in but on trying to open the door the handle came off because the door was stuck solid, so we had to prise it open with a knife. The place gave the general impression of being really neglected and poorly maintained. As for the furniture: The 2 chairs and sofa had no support to them. You may as well have sat on the floor. We had to bolster the chairs up with cushions off the sofa and pillows just to be able to sit in them. The bed mattresses were just as bad, no support. We both ached and had bad back ache every morning we got up and spent each night tossing and turning. Travel Lodge and Premier Inn have better mattresses than that cottage. By the second week I was sleeping on the floor because it gave more support but by the Wednesday enough was enough. We left Thursday instead of the Saturday due to bad back ache, It’s such a pity, the cottage is located in a beautiful spot and with a little thought and maintenance could be made into a little jewel of a place. We will not use this Cottage again and will not recommend it to anyone. Why didn’t we complain at the time, well we are not the kind of people who moan and complain about things we just carry on and get on with life. If you hadn’t asked for our views on the place we would not have said anything. We could have asked for people to come and re-clean and fix things while we were there but we were on holiday and simply didn’t want to spend it staying in waiting for people to come. We would much rather be out and about in the lovely sun shine. Without being sarcastic do you actually inspect the properties yourself or just take the word of the owner, I’m afraid the condition of stable cottage does not do the reputation of your company any favours

Thank you for your feedback but I don't understand why you didn't contact me on arrival in order that I could deal with your concerns which I will now take up with the cleaning company and their maintenance division. With regard to parking there is space in the layby outside the courtyard in order to unload and then move to the car park. Property Owner

  • "Stable Cottage was exceptionally clean, with comfortable beds, lots of storage and hooks in the bedrooms, big fluffy towels, cosy living room and very well equipped kitchen."

There was lots of little extras dotted around like books, board games, beach equipment, the cooker instructions, maps etc. There are countryside views from the front windows. The wifi was excellent. Easy parking at the back of the court. The owners have clearly put a lot of thought into how comfortable it is. The landlord was also quick to answer a pre-holiday enquiry. It's in a good spot to access local beaches on foot along the coastal path, by bus (<10 min walk to main road) or by car. The buses in Cornwall are regular and excellent value. The nearby beach of Porth is ideal for younger children but if you are coming with children in a pushchair, be aware that there is no path for the first half of the walk down to the main road. Watergate Bay was a particularly lovely open beach nearby. I would also recommend the nearby National Trust properties of Trerice and Lanhydrock. Unless you are going to Boardmasters (it would be an amazing spot to access the festival) I would say avoid going when it's on - for the first 3 days of our holiday (Sat-Mon) the traffic was pretty much at a standstill, our view was of fields of tents and there was literally thousands of people in Porth. However, this aside I would definitely recommend the cottage as a lovely base to explore the area.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments which are much appreciated. Property Owner

  • "I have stayed at Stable Cottage before in 2020 and my initial thoughts were that it was 'tired, rundown and in need of some serious TLC', there was also a terrible smell of damp as you entered the property."

However, despite this, we had a wonderful holiday and the cottage 'grew' on us. It was cosy, ideally situated and felt homely. We returned last week and oh my goodness! completely revamped! No smell of damp, repainted inside in a modern grey, new carpets... and (for my daughter's benefit) with the welcomed addition of WIFI! I cannot wait to rebook. The cottage is situated in a lovely courtyard, looking out across a valley, a few mins drive from the beach and it is perfect for a relaxing holiday. Everyone we met was friendly and it is a safe place to stay (this was extremely important to me as this time it was just myself and my daughter on holiday together. In summary, we had another wonderful holiday at Stable cottage and note to the owner, can I have first refusal if you decide to sell please :-)

Thank you so much for your feedback. It means a lot to us as we spent all winter redecorating and upgrading . Property Owner

  • "What a wonderful holiday we've had and Stable Cottage was the perfect place for us to see Newquay from."

There was no smell of damp, as mentioned in previous reviews, so whatever the problem might have been it had definitely been addressed before we arrived. We were blessed with glorious weather whilst we were there which definitely helped- had we been faced with a lot of rain the lack of WiFi would have become an issue for the kids, although for me the escape from the constant ping of the phone felt like a bit of a relief. We also love walking- for someone who isn't keen, the hilly but short walk between the cottage and the beach might be off putting. But for us, a lovely, clean, well equipped cottage surrounded by beautiful countryside, just a stone's throw from the beach was absolutely perfect!! Thank you!

  • "The smell of damp in the cottage is pretty overwhelming."

There were quite a lot of cobwebs in the cottage. I looked under the bed to find a socket for my phone charger and it was really dirty under there - quite a lot of empty sweet wrappers. The cottage would really benefit from having wi-fi, I know it is stated that it doesn't have wi-fi, but it doesn't state that there is no phone signal inside the property. I think it would be worth installing the most basic cheap internet especially as it's now necessary to pre-book every attraction that you want to go to. I don't think anyone would begrudge paying £6-7 a week more to have wi-fi. The positives: The location is really good. The bed is comfortable and the linen and towels were of a high quality. The shower works well. The cottage is basic, but it does have everything that you need. Advice for finding the cottage using sat nav: Set you sat nav for the centre of Porth and when you get there, reset it for the cottage's address otherwise you will be likely to be sent down the narrowest of backroads that is barely wide enough for one car.

Thank you for your feedback. The comments you made have been taken on board. As you can see the property is a old cornish cottage and can be at times prone to damp. However the owner is currently living in the property for the winter season. The owner has had the property walls tanked which is similar to damp proofing. When the property comes to letting again the property will have been fully decorated and will have new equipment provided. There will no longer be a damp problem either. Thank you. Property Owner

  • "When we arrived at the cottage, from the outside it looked quite quaint and with the cluster of cottages surrounding it it looked like the ideal hideaway."

It is surrounded by beautiful countryside, away from any hustle and bustle and it is very relaxing. The cottage itself was a huge disappointment when we walked through the door. It smelt musty and was very tired looking. I was quite disappointed as I had taken my Mum away for a well overdue break with myself and my young daughter. However, despite the initial disappointment we grew to love the cosiness and tranquility that the cottage provided and the views from the lounge and first bedroom were absolutely stunning. Yes it could do with updating but overall we had one of the best holidays we’ve ever had in Cornwall. Porth is somewhere we hadn’t really explored before and we love it! The lack of internet wasn’t a problem as it provided us with a really relaxed atmosphere, I think it just added to the peace and tranquility there. Finally, despite the musty smell on arrival the cottage was really clean. There was nothing that hadn’t been cleaned so we couldn’t fault the cleanliness of the the place at all. None of us wanted to go home and we all missed the cottage which we found surprising after our initial thoughts and opinions :-) Overall we had a fantastic week, we were extremely lucky with the weather and we had the beautiful, stunning views to go home to after a day relaxing on the beach. Thank you!

  • "This holiday home could be amazing but the one thing that hits you straight away when you walk through the door is the horrendous smell of damp!"

The smell is all through the bungalow- in the cupboards, hoover, carpets....... so everything stinks and feels wet to the touch and it really disappointing!! On the positive side, the location is great, it is really beautiful- the description of the place and its location is spot on. There is everything you could need in the cupboards for a week away and the shower was fab too. Another plus was that the bedding and towels (which are supplied) are of fantastic quality (even if we didn't have pillow protectors on and one pillow was grotty and soiled). All in all I would not go back again because of the damp problem. It is in need of some improvements and modernisation too. Really disappointed as it really could be the perfect, relaxing get away.

Our clothes when not worn felt damp, and the bedding? Maybe it needs a dehumidifier? It also could do with a paint just to modernize it a bit? Location was fantastic and the area where we were staying. Porth itself is stunning, as a family we thoroughly enjoyed staying there.

Thank you for your feedback Mr O'Connell. I am sorry that the bedside lamps were not working on arrival. The cottage was fine and in line with the details provided by Sykes. I was a little surprised when I walked into the cottage as the photographs gave the impression the cottage was bigger with the published pictures on the lounge area and kitchen area. In fact, the photography didn't quite reflect how close the kithcen area was to the lounge area. Having said that, all was fine and I would certainly recommend the cottage as a base for travel around the area. The area does not receive a decent signal for EE and Virgin phones but O2 works fine, albeit you may need to stand outside! Overall, I was very impressed with the whole experience.
