Jacobs Barn

This was not our first visit to Jacob's Barn.

We returned once again because we love the peace and tranquility. When you add the friendly and helpful hosts, and the gorgeous barn (maintained immaculately clean), it's not difficult to understand why return visits are a necessity. Thank you, Helen and Chris.

This is a great place to stay for a Dartmoor holiday.

Helen and Chris are kind and helpful hosts, and the house and grounds are beautifully maintained. Nearby, it’s a 10 minute drive to Tavistock - which is rather nice - and 15 mins or so to beautiful Lydford Gorge. Similar times / distances to the start points for walks on the western side of the moor. North and south coasts are both about 45 - 60 mins away.

An excellent property, in immaculate condition and with all the space and amenities you could wish for.

There is a huge amount of land around the property to enjoy, in a very tranquil setting. The owners live next door and are discreet, charming and very welcoming and helpful.

This four day break was booked at the last minute.

How lucky were we to stumble across Jacob's Barn? These four days were part of heatwave #2 (or was it #3) of 2026. We were met on arrival with a warm welcome from the hosts Helen and Chris. Throughout our stay they were friendly and informative but not intrusive. Jacob's Barn is a spacious and well equipped barn conversion which has kept the flavour of the original building. The grounds of the property (shared with the owners) are vast and we were welcome to use all of the facilities. This is a very quiet property and we were well entertained by the swifts, house martins and swallows. Jacob's Barn is located midway between the north and south coasts of Devon and within easy reach of several National Trust properties. In our 3 whole days there we visited Buckland Abbey, Lydford Gorge and Looe. There are many places to eat within an easy drive but in particular we recommend The Dartmoor Inn at Lydford for that very special occasion. Strawberry Fields Farm Shop is an amazing place with a restaurant. This is a quality holiday home and we highly recommend it.

Lovely cottage, great hosts.

Good location to explore the area. Lovely garden but not really an area to relax in. Good for playing garden games though. Two showers and bedroom fans would have been a great addition. Would recommend to others.

Ideal for a family holiday, everything you could need is provided, owners very friendly.

Location is great for walking on Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley, coast only 40 minutes away. Would return for future bookings if in the area.

This is the best accommodation I've ever stayed in.

The owners are so welcoming, cottage delightful with lots of space, and the grounds which you've given free rein in are stunning. It's well positioned to visit Dartmoor and a few National Trust properties, Tavistock is well worth spending a day exploring. Will definately go back.

The barn is well equipped and comfortable. It is situated very close to the Cornish border so Devon and Cornwall places of interest are easily accessible

The fixtures and fittings are all quality products and the owners are welcoming, really friendly but not intrusive in any way. The gardens and outdoor facilities are also available for use.

It's a lovely, quiet location with a large garden, spacious house and all the facilities we needed.

Fabulous converted barn with everything you could need.

The owners are lovely and very helpful. The garden is big with lots of sports equipment provided including table tennis, croquet, archery, football, tennis, and badminton. Our dogs loved running around the enclosed paddocks and paddling in the stream. We recommend the Lydford to Widgery Cross hike, watersports at Roadford, Bude Beach and Eden Project.

We had a wonderful stay at Jacob's Barn.

The barn was a warm and welcoming 'home from home' with all all the modern conveniences to make our stay very comfortable. The grounds were lovely and allowed us to enjoy time as a family outside making good use of the tennis court and various games provided! The table tennis room was also a firm favourite! The welcome 'cream tea' was thoroughly enjoyed by all and our dog Milo enjoyed his treats too! Thank you to our hosts for making us feel so welcome, we look forward to returning.

I have been staying in holiday cottages for over forty years and Jacob’s Barn is up there with the best.

I cannot fault the accommodation in any way and as for the grounds around the Barn, it is beautiful. It was so peaceful and relaxing and walking around the property and listening to the birds was bliss. Helen and Chris were so friendly and, if asked, would help in any way they could. No-one could fail to be impressed by the whole set up and I would advise anyone to give it a go and book this lovely place for their holiday.

The owners were very helpful and the barn was clean and comfortable.

The scones and jam were very welcoming. The dogs loved being able to use the field to run around in.

The accommodative is quite spacious and comfortable and comes with all amenities. The cottage is situated in a lovely, quiet rural location but within 10-15 minutes drive from the amenities in Tavistock. Chris and Helen are very welcoming but unobtrusive hosts and are on hand in the unlikely event of any queries. Highly recommended.

Our 6th stay in this gem of a property.

Ideally situated for visiting south Devon and into Cornwall as right on the border of 2 counties. Well stocked and equipped with dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. Lovely owners who are friendly and obliging. Although the property is situated in the same grounds as the owners privacy is not a problem at all as they are rarely seen. We will definitely be returning again.

Great place for families lots to keep them busy, good wifi and spacius rooms.

A lovely property with beautiful Devon views.

Spacious kitchen/diner and separate lounge. Comfortably furnished and with excellent facilities. The property is maintained to a high standard and we found the owners, Chris and Helen, who live in the adjacent property to be very welcoming, helpful and non intrusive. The cream tea provided on our arrival was most welcome and a lovely touch. This was our second visit and we were sorry to leave and very much hope to come back again.

With the welcome of the open log burning fire, the beautiful interior, which is so comfortable, clean and homely, we couldn't wish for a better place to stay and discover Devon and Cornwall. As hosts, Helen and Chris are absolutely wonderful! Everything has been thought of; it is truly a home from home. (The table tennis room is a big plus for us all, too!) Same time next year

An absolutely magical, wholesome and wonderful stay!

The barn is perfect and warm, with plenty of space. The table tennis room was great fun, we got the fire going as well whilst playing cluedo. The grounds are utterly wonderful, as a real nature and bird enthusiast I sent a lot of time bird watching and doing a walk of the grounds where I saw a woodpecker, buzzard, jays and pheasants, it was also lovely to see the 2 deer often. The stars at night were also great. I live locally in Plymouth but it was still fabulous to have a country break retreat and everything was only really ever a 10 to 20 min drive away, from Tavistock to Lydford Gorge. A wonderful stay, I want to go back right away!! Thank you.

A very beautiful cottage.

The owners are very welcoming and helpful in choosing places to visit. A wonderful large garden for our two dogs. We highly recommend visiting. We will definitely be back next year. Thank you for a wonderful holiday

Lovely barn, we had a great stay.

Good facilities with lots of little extras - welcome pack, bath room soaps. Plenty of room in the barn and the garden was lovely - very large and enclosed, our dog loved it. Owners very welcoming and helpful. We had a problem with our car on route and local very small garage was excellent. Good location for a wonderful holiday.

This was our 4th visit here.

Lovely property, clean and well equipped. Helen and Chris are welcoming with nothing being too much trouble. It is handy for visiting lots of different places such as Looe and Polperro, Plymouth, Dartmouth,Boscastle and Port Isaac to name a few .There are also lots of National trust properties near by which are worth a visit. We would highly recommend this. We will definitely be booking this property again.

Jacobs Barn was an amazing place to spend a holiday, it was so clean and fresh and had eveything that you need.

Helen and Chris are such lovely people and made us feel at home from day one. the tennis court was used every day by all of us and the meadows were perfect for Farley the dog. we will definitely stay again.

The hosts very welcoming and helpful but we hardly saw them which was good as they were so close by.

We had rain most of the week and still did some local walks. It was a good base for exploring the area. Tavostock was quaint.

We had a fantastic week staying in Jacobs Barn and it was a perfect location for exploring all the area has to offer.

The large garden and fields were amazing and our dog loved having so much freedom to roam and run around. We were made to feel so welcome by the owners and will definitely be looking to return in the future.

A good size attractive cottage in a lovely rural location with access to good size gardens and fields.

The accommodation was well furnished and the kitchen/dining room was fully equipped. The accommodation included a table tennis room and grass tennis court. The owners who live next door were very helpful and were not intrusive. We would love to stay there again.

Words alone are not enough.

What a fantastic experience a week at Jacobs Barn was. From the moment we drove through the gate we could see we had made a good decision in choosing Jacobs Barn for our holiday break. The stunning beauty of the gardens and the warm welcome we received on arrival was only a small preview of what was in store. Both Helen and Chris are the perfect hosts although we now class them as friends rather than hosts. They were there to greet us and around if we wanted anything but never intrusive. Jacobs Barn is perfect for a full on family holiday or that quiet secluded break when you just need to get away from it all. All the rooms are all well furnished and the most comfortable beds I have ever experienced in a holiday rental. You will find lots of thoughtful hidden extras from the Jam fresh cream and scones on arrival to the dishwasher and washing machine tablets supplied. There is even a lead ready to plug your laptop in to the large smart TV on the wall in the lounge. There is plenty to keep all ages occupied from tennis and badminton outside to indoor table tennis and board games for the odd rainy day. The walks through the grounds are breath-taking. I could go on forever about the things Jacobs Barn has to offer but will leave you to enjoy the surprise of all the hidden extras for yourself as I know you will not be disappointed.

The property was lovely as were the owners, we had a lovely traditional welcome pack which included scones and a tub of Cornish clotted cream, what a lovely way to start our holiday with both our grandchildren, the property was nice and roomy and the table tennis room was a godsend in view of our changeable weather, the pet secure grounds were perfect for our standard poodle who loved to eun in the large fields, would certainly recommend to friends especially if your taking your dog on holiday.

The barn is very comfortable and spacious. It's position allowed us to visit the wild country side of Dartmoor and the raw nature of Lydford Gorge as well as the national trust properties and coast to the south. The wonderful weather we had made for a memorable week.

Another great stay at Jacob’s Barn, which we cannot recommend highly enough.

The barn is comfortable, well-equipped, always spotless, and we enjoy the tasty welcome gifts. Nothing is too much trouble. The gardens and surrounding fields are perfect for quick dog walks, and there are plenty of outdoor areas to enjoy the sun with a book or a glass of wine! We also enjoy all the visiting birds and wildlife. We find that the barn is perfectly situated, only a few minutes drive from Dartmoor and Tavistock, equi-distant between the stunning scenery of North and South coasts, plenty of NT properties to visit, and an easy journey to Plymouth or Exeter. We stay here at least once or twice a year, when our batteries need recharging!

The barn is very well equipped and benefits from a washing machine and a tumble dryer which is extremely useful if weather is poor. Luckily we were blessed with sunny weather for most of our stay .The grounds are lovely and peaceful and outside furniture is wonderful to sit and relax and enjoy the tranquility.The hosts Helen and Chris are lovely folk and very accommodating. They make guests feel very welcome but ensure that guests have their own privacy.

The facilities are great and the barn has everything you need. We especially liked the ‘Poop Deck’ to sit out and take in the countryside air and the Tennis court is a great bonus. Helen & Chris are great hosts and happy to help whilst still giving plenty of privacy. Would certainly recommend!

We love Jacobs Barn.

It is a beautiful cottage set within a small village near to Dartmoor. It is in a stunning area with green fields all around. The cottage is spotlessly clean and has all the facilities you could want on a holiday. The market town of Tavistock is a 15 minute drive away. One thing you can't guarantee with areas near to Dartmoor is the weather but we were lucky to have had sunshine and blue skies every day, and this had the added advantage of being able to see the stars at night. A fabulous holiday.

The barn and grounds are both lovely, we were very pleased we chose Jacobs barn and will definitely return.

We had a dog and two teenagers with us and everyone particularly enjoyed the outdoor space and games provided, especially during heatwave days. The barn is well equipped with extra touches from the owners to ensure a comfortable stay. The owners are super people, very friendly relaxed and helpful, and they made sure we felt like it was only us there. We very highly recommend Jacobs Barn.

Amazing, well equipped property and gorgeous grounds. Helen and Chris are fabulous hosts and we felt at home straight away. This is a great location to explore both Devon and Cornwall, we loved it here.

Well located and an excellent base to travel to the north or south coast.

Easy to find with clear and concise instructions. The accommodation was excellent with great facilities both inside and out, particularly liked the land attached to the property which made it a great place for pets. The hosts were attentive when they were there but not overbearing and we would recommend Jacob’s Barn to other holidaymakers.

Amazing!

We arrived on the day of the storm hit the south of England to no electricity. The owners couldn't have done more, Fire was lit, oil lamps provided, boiling water in flasks for drinks, cooking on their own aga, updates when they got them. The holiday could have been a nightmare but instead they changed it into an entertaining adventure. There are not enough words to be able to recommend this property and the owners highly enough.

Our host and hostess were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed playing croquet on the lawn! The location of the property was within easy reach of both Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor. Shopping was close by at Tavistock. We can highly recommend this property for a Devon and Cornwall holiday.

Excellent property set in beautiful surroundings everything needed was there very friendly and helpful owner Perfect holiday home except if we’re being honest for us for the bed mattresses far too soft also room large enough to take a king size and maybe a queen size bed in other bedroom would be good

Lots of space. Well equipped kitchen. Nothing we needed that wasn’t there. Good Wi-Fi. No mobile signal but can use landline and pay for calls or use Wi-Fi calls. Teenagers liked table tennis room but not the time of year or weather to use outdoor facilities. We have booked to come again when hopefully better weather!

Wonderful place, all aspects of comfort has been considered and covered.

The house / grounds where amazing for our three young boys (And us adults) to enjoy, completely safe and just a pleasurable place to stay and visit. We would certainly recommend and come back to this cottage, the location was brilliant as not in the heart of the tourists but close enough to everything you should wish for. One negative is the sunshine does shine quite easily through the windows with blinds and obviously those without.

Jacobs Barn is a warm and friendly holiday cottage which caters for all of your needs.

We are a family with two young children and the girls just loved exploring the grounds. From watching the tadpoles in the little frog pond, to sitting and watching the water wheel turn and exploring the fields and stream there was lots to keep them entertained. We even spotted hedgehogs and pheasants out of the windows! The black out blinds helped dull the sunlight which meant we even got a little lie in! Dartmoor and all it's wonders was only a stones throw away and there were lots of local walks from the property. The accomodation had everything we could possibly need - the kitchen was incredibly well equiped so we could even do a little cake making with the girls! Chris and Helen are incredibly kind and immediately made us feel at ease as our first get away in the latest post-lockdown times.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful cottage it’s in a beautiful location and everything you could possibly need has been thought of.

Exceeded Expectations (3 out of 3) Would you like to tell us anything else about this holiday? We booked Jacobs Barn to celebrate my wife’s 30th birthday. After we made our booking we spoke to Helen - the owner of Jacobs Barn, who was an absolute delight to talk to. She was so helpful and patient with all our questions, provided us with various amenities in the cottage to ensure my wife and I, my brother in law, sister in law and their 10 month old were very comfortable. She provided us with a cot, highchair and baby security gates to help make our stay even more convenient. She also reassured us about the safety measures in place with respect to COVID at the cottage. Prior to our trip, she kept in touch with us and gave us recommendations for shops, restaurants nearby a detailed information pack. She asked us to contact her or her husband if we needed anything at all. When we arrived at Jacobs Barn, we were greeted with a very cozy and clean cottage. Helen and her husband Chris had left a lovely card and gift for my wife for her birthday. She also left us some delicious scones, clotted cream and jam. The cottage was spacious and had lots of room for a crawling 10 month old baby as well 4 adults. We felt right at home for the four days we spent at Jacobs Barn and will definitely be coming back soon!

The house was fantastic never mind the outside area for our two dogs who usual like to go to the beach for a run and a swim they didn't bother about that loved the field they had it was more than enough for them, the owners couldn't be more helpful, the property was comfortable, very clean, the best we have ever stayed at as was so well equipped will be going again.

The owner even kindly contacted us on our return re the dogs dishes we left behind. Can't speak highly enough of this property.

My second visit to Jacobs Barn.

Beautiful house in very good location for visits to popular places and very close to Dartmoor. The owners are so welcoming, we had a Devonshire tea waiting for us in the fridge and milk and tea, just what we needed after a long journey . The gardens are beautiful and our little boy and dogs had great fun. I would definitely return again as i can honestly say it is the best holiday home i have ever stayed in.

As a family with 3 children it is quite stressful to ensure our holiday accomodation meets our needs but I needn't have worried as this Barn was fantastic with plenty of room inside and out for the children to have their own space. The owners were really friendly and although we had no issues at all I was reassured if we needed anything they would be straight on it. We even had a incident were a special teddy (recently purchased at paignton zoo!) Was left behind on our return home and it was kindly posted to be reunited with children. I could not recommend this barn more, so family friendly! We would love to return and hopefully have glorious sunshine to enjoy the outside space more instead of the rain!

Lovely hosts.

Very welcoming. The cottage was gorgeous. Far enough in the country to feel well out of town/city life but close enough to make the short drive into town for coffee, restaurants and other typical tourist-type things. The cottage had all the domestic appliances you could need on holiday. The garden was large and impressive with a gorgeous terrace behind a brick barn which was within earshot of the calming influence of the nearby stream. We adored the cottage and will be going back next year.

Location is great, convenient for visiting Dartmoor, Tamar valley and both coasts.

Outdoor facilities and space the best we have experienced with any holiday cottage we have rented. Owners on site, very lovely and very helpful. Cottage is well equipped, lounge/sitting room has great views over garden and a great, large TV and a superb fan for cooling on a hot day and a log burner for cold ones. Games room with table tennis table for friendly competitions.

Helen and Chris, the owners, were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. To be greeted with a homemade cake, chocolates and a bottle of prosecco to celebrate the new year and treats for the dogs were very unexpected but a wonderful gesture. Would certainly stay again.

We had a lovely holiday staying at Jacobs Barn.

Everything met our expectations and nothing was too much trouble . Helen, the owner, said anything that we needed we just had to ask. We were greeted with a lovely homemade cake and chocolates which was gratefully received! There were even doggy treats for the dog. Cannot fault anything.

Staying at Jacob's Barn was a very positive experience and I can see why people return multiple times.

The owners were friendly, welcoming and very helpful (and someone is very good at cake). The accommodation is spacious, stylish, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The setting is delightful (loved the dragon) and beautifully maintained (wish my lawn looked like that) and my teenagers loved the table tennis and swing ball. It is a very quiet location within easy reach of both the more rugged northern coastline and the busier, beachier, southern coastline as well as being handy for Dartmoor. We explored in all directions and wished we could have stayed longer. It is one of very few holiday homes I have visited where you could easily imagine yourself living. Definitely the top spot in my holiday homes ranking table!

What a great location for exploring the moors and very dog friendly too.

The owners were very helpful and Jacobs barn had plenty to offer a small family especially with the outdoor play equipment and space.

A perfect place to stay.

We were absolutely spoilt at Jacobs Barn. We were welcomed by the lovely owners who had even baked us a cake, and could not have been nicer. The barn was clean, and thoughtfully decorated to feel like a home from home, with little helpful guidance notes dotted around. The kitchen was well equipped, with everything "shop bought" clean. They had even left us dishwasher and washing machine tablets, and a new washing up sponge! On the side was wine and squash, and a polite note to ask that we replace whatever we open. The lounge had a fireplace with a basket of wood and kindling provided (which we chose not to use in July). They had even thought to include a long HDMI cable attached to the TV, so we could plug in the kids game console we brought with - which we seldom used as the kids were kept entertained with the indoor table tennis table, along with the Tennis cout, croquet lawn and various other games available in the immaculately kept gardens. 10 out of 10 in every respect, this cottage was faultless, and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Lovely place, the barn was well equipped with everything we needed for our stay and the garden was brilliant for dogs, we only wished we had better weather so we could have used it more!

The hosts were lovely and welcoming and the extra touches (homemade cake, dog treats and chocates) were a nice surprise :) overall we had a great holiday here and would highly recommend it! :)

This was the best cottage in all ways that we have encountered, particularly in terms of comfort and equipment.

A truly wonderful base for touring. Helen and Chris were welcoming hosts who made us feel special. Nothing was too much trouble. Had the weather been better we would certainly have made use of the outdoor facilities (tennis court/croquet court). Enjoyed the table tennis table. Lovely walks from the door. What more could you want.

This was our 2nd visit to Jacobs Barn, in over 20 years of holiday cottages the first time we have revisited, the welcome we received was as good as the first time, the owners, Helen and Chris Snow are lovely people, very helpful should you need anything and a wonderful home made cake was waiting for us plus a treat for our dog, we strongly recommend this cottage and promise you will not be disappointed with this well equipped beautiful holiday home.

The owners are second to none. There is nothing you need the barn is so well equipped. It is very spacious. We were a party of 4 adults and didn't get in an anyone's way amazing holiday thank you.

Jacobs Barn is a really delightful and spacious, well equipped and clean cottage.

We were made to feel really welcome. On arrival we were greeted by the owner who explained where lots of local attractions etc. were and the history of the barn conversion. Helen and Chris were excellent hosts and it has to be said, have thought of absolutely everything here.

Jacob's Barn is a wonderful place to stay, quiet and peaceful and very secure for our two dogs. Whether you're looking for a complete break away from society or a base to visit some of the places Devon and Cornwall have to offer, Jacob's Barn is a real home from home. As has been mentioned previously on other reviews, it is very much out of the way, the closest town being Tavistock which is around 5 miles away so if you're looking to wander out for a drink or to pick up something from the local shop then that's not going to happen. Prepare properly and it's not an issue. There's plenty to do, tennis court, croquet, ample board games and table tennis, and two outdoor seating areas to enjoy a glass of wine or dinner. We felt very comfortable here and the dogs loved it too. The delicious home made cake, the chocolates and the biscuits for the dogs were a lovely personal touch. The pictures and description represent the property very well.

The cottage is in a good situation for sightseeing and in a quiet location, with extensive beautiful grounds, very well kept and safely enclosed and so extremely suitable for our dogs.

Two lovely outdoor seating areas with super views. Everything was excellent, and our hosts could not have been more helpful, giving us a warm welcome with a generous selection of goodies, (for us and the dogs!) Only 2 very minor criticisms that didn’t really detract from our stay:- One of the bed mattresses (in the single room) is a little uncomfortable, and because (in the bedrooms) there are blinds rather than curtains, one of our party found the room too light in the mornings, especially when trying to catch up on some lie-ins! Nevertheless, we look forward to a return visit soon.

This barn conversion is excellent in every respect.

Spacious, well looked after, wonderful facilities, light and airy, lovely welcome gifts, perfect hosts and in a great position for visiting both coasts, Boscastle on the North coast and Looe on the Southern coast both within an hours drive. I will definitely visit Jacobs Barn when I next travel to the West Country. I am so pleased I chose this cottage.

A fantastic spacious holiday accommodation.

Friendly, helpful hosts. Converted barn clean, comfortable and very well equipped. Ideal base for families or couples. Lots of outside space for use solely by those renting barn - two different sitting/eating areas, tennis court, croquet laid out plus swing ball , boules and even a couple of large water super soaker shooters that my grandchildren had fun with on couple of hot days. Lots of fun on table tennis table for all too. Take food/drink supplies with you as no village shop or village pub. We topped up supplies in Tavistock which was small market town around fifteen:twenty mins away. Highly recommend. Safe for children to run around outside. Safe for dog too!

Holiday was easy to book and the cottage was just what we wanted for a short last minute getaway.

The barn was lovely and the owners were so helpful leaving flowers, yummy cake and chocolates on our arrival.

Being able to take our dog was great and we were able to take him for a walk around the land was superb. If we were going back to the area again we would definitely Re-book and recommend it to family & friends.
