Description
Clarence Grey House is a beautifully restored Grade II listed Victorian villa, tucked away on one of Torquay’s charming conservation streets. Offering a rare sense of calm and elegance, this gracious home feels wonderfully peaceful, yet sits just a short walk from the vibrant harbour, beaches and coastal attractions for which the English Riviera is so loved.
Rich in character, the house showcases classic period features throughout - from tall sash windows that flood the rooms with natural light, to ornate ceiling roses and generous proportions that create an atmosphere of relaxed grandeur. It’s an ideal setting for families or friends seeking space, comfort and memorable moments together by the sea.
Clarence Grey is a much-loved historic Victorian home, and part of its charm lies in its age and character. While the property is thoroughly cleaned before each stay, the rural location and period features mean that the occasional spider or cobweb may reappear between cleans.
With parking for up to four cars, arrivals are effortless. Step inside to a striking entrance hall, where a baby grand piano sets a welcoming and refined tone - perfect for shared evenings and special occasions. The inviting sitting room is made for togetherness, featuring three sumptuous sofas, an electric fire and Free-Sat TV, offering a cosy retreat after a day exploring. The spacious kitchen blends traditional wooden cabinetry with modern convenience, centred around an impressive AGA range cooker - a joy for keen cooks and sociable meal preparation alike. Nearby, the elegant dining room provides a wonderful space to linger over family feasts, celebrate milestones or plan the next day’s adventures.
Upstairs, a sweeping L-shaped staircase leads to a cloakroom and family bathroom, helping mornings flow smoothly for larger groups. Four beautifully proportioned bedrooms await, all with high ceilings and sash windows: two king-size rooms, a twin bedroom with en-suite shower room, and a super-king zip-and-link room offering flexible sleeping arrangements. Ample storage throughout ensures a relaxed and uncluttered stay.
Outside, the sheltered subtropical garden becomes a tranquil haven. Dine alfresco on the terrace beneath gently swaying palms, unwind with a morning coffee, or simply soak up the peaceful Devon sunshine - a lovely contrast to the lively seaside atmosphere just beyond.
Clarence Grey House enjoys an enviable location. Torquay’s bustling harbour, independent shops, cafés and restaurants are close by, along with local favourites such as the Princess Theatre, The Real Crime Museum and Dinosaur World. Spend days on the golden sands of Torquay or Meadfoot Beach, explore the prehistoric wonders of Kents Cavern, or admire coastal views from Thatcher Point. Nearby Babbacombe offers another beach, the Model Village, Bygones museum and Torquay Golf Course, while Paignton, Brixham and Dartmoor National Park promise unforgettable days out.
Blending timeless Victorian elegance with modern comfort, Clarence Grey House offers a truly special base for relaxed family holidays and joyful get-togethers by the Devon coast.

Arrived and the place needed a deep clean Couldn't check in till after 4 due to cleaning team on site Onsuite rooms damp and moldy
Lovely elegant property with excellent facilities everywhere save the kitchen.
The Aga was a challenge until we worked out it had to be switched on in the morning to be at a temperature to cook the evening meal. The crockery, glasses and cooking equipment were old, mismatched and inadequate for 8 people. Panels on the kitchen door were splitting apart. No instructions regarding recycling or used linen so we used our initiative. Otherwise very comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Having been assured that the house would be deep cleaned before our stay I was horrified by the state of the place.
It was extremely disappointing. On opening the front door and seeing the place for the first time I really didn’t know if I actually could bear to stay there for a whole week. Putting new geraniums in pots outside was no answer to making the rooms fresh and clean and clearing out all the clutter. The big bedroom on the right was so very dirty that no one would sleep in it. We found cloth and huge dust balls under the bed. It was disgraceful. The pillows and under sheet were not clean in the other two bedrooms. Only one bedroom on the right was of a decent standard. The carpets were so grubby and not suitable for my 9 month granddaughter to crawl on. The kitchen was haphazard and badly equipped. We had to take a door off the kitchen cupboard on the first night as it was loose and dangerous. The whole place was fusty and grubby. It was actually creepy to be there. The patio was unswept. The list goes on. As I had been in touch with Sykes before about the state of the house and been reassured that it would be deep cleaned I was hugely disappointed to find such an unbelievably dirty place. I expected some refund. I also recommend that you take this property off your books as it doesn’t reflect well on your company to have such a substandard property on your books. I shall email photos.
